In my opinion, this is one of the best places to study in Los Angeles. If you are not a student, you will need to show a government-issued ID when entering the library. When I'm visiting I park in the McCarthy parking garage and purchase an all-day pass for $14(As of this writing 4/2/22). It's about a 3-minute walk to the Library. The second and third floors are very quiet and have some rooms available where you can sit alone. I believe this room is on a first come first serve basis. Plan ahead when coming on campus you will need to complete a wellness assessment for campus access (Trojan Check Day Pass). I was asked to show this pass to enter the parking structure. It takes about 5 minutes to complete. There is a Starbucks just outside the Library however, Security will only allow a covered mug in the Library. Free guest wifi and plenty of restrooms. I know this sounds like a lot but if you need quiet, focused study time for 6-8 hours undisturbed, this place can't be beaten. read more

Subjectively speaking, Leavey Library is five stars just because my study mates made this depressing place thoroughly enjoyable. I've spent almost all of my nights in Leavey in my junior year because my apartment was incredibly noisy or too hot to study. You also get to bump into folks that you see in class or haven't seen in a few years because Leavey brings everybody together...whether you hate it or not. Leavey holds a special place in my heart...I even took some pictures after graduation ceremony in front of this place because of the happy and crappy memories I've made here. And, the building architecture is actually quite nice when you compare this to VKC, Seaver Science Library, Mudd Hall (not the inside), etc... Objectively, I've taken a star down because the bathrooms are absolutely filthy. It's like going to a public bathroom at a resting area in the middle of nowhere. A combination of wet and dry toilet paper can be seen on the ground. The basement bathrooms for females always have 99% of the toilets UNFLUSHED with literal shit floating around. I mean...do students assume the toilets will automatically flush??? Come on guys. There was one time that the basement bathrooms were flooded with...more shit. Oh boy. But, hey everything else is solid! I particularly love the first floor area on the left hand side of the library. The ceilings are higher so you don't feel crammed inside and it has a slightly darker tone than the upper floors so it's not like you're at the hospital. Leavey is a great place to have group meetings in the basement rooms or to do groupwork in both basement and upper levels. It's just that the basement rooms are larger and the TVs are also bigger. There was one time during dead week that I played "Fantastic Baby" and "Dope" on a loop to boost the morale of both my friend and mine. Seeing the MV play on such a large screen with pretty good audio is an experience that you can't get at other libraries (if you know these kpop songs then good4u). Ah, and there's a free scanner that you can use in the basement (and possibly in the upper floors as well). Ask the ITS service if you can't find them. Security seems to improve substantially given that NOBODY from the public can access the library 24/7 (instead of the usual 9pm check). You must have a valid USC ID that you need to tap before entering. (I believe alumni may go in as well? Not sure). They've also completely replaced the student staff with legitimate officers at the front and when checking IDs past 9pm. Hopefully there would be no more stolen laptops, but don't ever feel too safe in a public place! read more

This is a really good library to study at. It is opened really late for general public from 9am to 9pm. It is opened until 12 midnight for students. This library is great if you don't have a quit place to study for a long period of time. The extended hours compared to typical libraries in Los Angeles make it stand out! I had a good experience studying here. The only downside is I have not been to the USC campus at night and was not aware that a lot of the gates were closed. I asked a security guard for directions to the nearest entrance and he seemed SO ANNOYED. He was like "MAN REALLY? You don't know? There is only one exit you have to go down here and around" wich was a very long exit. I asked his if there was another way out and he said no. I then asked a student and he told me there is and another exit was just 2 minutes away instead of walking 10 minutes to go around the campus. Really glad i did not take the security guards advice. Other than that, the experience studying on this library was really great. Very peaceful and quite! read more

I love coming here to study. It has a vibe, that this is what it means to study. The vibe means business, that this is war. You against your future. To sacrifice now, and it will pay off later. Your tuition is hella expensive, you better not mess up now because you can't afford to. Your future is riding on how well you excel in class and that you are silently surrounded by people of like-mindedness, who could either help you in the future or be your next competition. If you talk in this place, you are in the wrong place. Step outside or get a study room. Parking is free, it's the building next door. There is a Starbucks near the entrance to the library if you need refreshments. They close at 7. And if you have the Starbucks app, you can use it, but they will not reload it. This library is open 24/7 to its USC students, closed at 9PM to the public. They do card to enter starting at 9PM-7AM. You'll have to leave at 9. read more

Leavey Library was built during the 93-94 school year, a factoid I only know because I was a freshman living in adjacent Birnkrant Residence Hall during construction. Reinforced steel and ample concrete forms the skeleton upon which this four story Library is built. Today, Leavey serves as a place for not-quite quiet study with ample small study rooms, mini cubicles, and computer tables. An outside patio is always lively, as are the bathrooms... proximity to two parking structures makes this your first stop or last stop in campus before freeway traffic. Architecture and aesthetics blend this building into the campus, where 100 year old buildings and 5 year old structures meet and meld. Afternoons in the shadow of Rossier are pleasant outside, sitting by the reflection pool. Can't complain about the view, either. read more

Library on USC campus. One of the many libraries to go study, hang out, or sleep. Leavey has gotten strict with outsiders which is great for students. No more random strangers. Security has tightened up. This place is always packed tho and there's no space. With so many bodies it stinks up especially closer to exam weeks and nights. Some of the seating is broken and sometimes bathrooms are trashed. With SC money they should be able to make this main library better. read more

If you have a book on reserve or request it is likely at this library. Not a lot of books compared to doheny but a good selection. Quiet and easy to study here. The basement has great rooms for meetings or study groups you can reserve. There are even seats outside so you can study and enjoy the sun. The building is a bit old. The elevators are slow and only one can go to the basement but compared to the other libraries on campus this building is new and high tech. I usually know what I like but when it comes to Leavey, I am a house (or library) divided. First off, Leavey is basically Azkaban (in my opinion). It's cramped, it's crowded and the sadness of all the people writing 20 page papers sucks out all your happiness before you can say "Expecto Patronum." Leavey also smells (you cannot smell items in movies but I doubt Azkaban smells good) and whether it's from sweat or not, I am not sure. Leavey is also crowded, I am lucky if I can find a seat and even luckier if that seat is not a thin bench with no outlet in a crowded and loud hallway. So why is this place three stars instead of one? Leavey has saved my grades. I once had a 25 page paper (with 16 pages of endnotes and appendicies), I grabbed a red bull, sat myself down in a corner at leavey, cranked out the paper by 4am and got an A. Leavey is also open 24/7 so if I need to study somewhere all night (which could happen by judging my paperload for the next couple of weeks), I know exactly where to go, no questions asked. At the same time, I wish Doheny would be open 24/7 (that's another topic for another review that involves state codes about monuments). Overall, I know leavey has had upgrades including more study areas and a less cramped environment. USG (Undergraduate Student Government) has been working hard to improve leavey, make it feel more friendly and make it easier for some people to get work done. So since I have a love/hate relationship with leavey, I am not picking a side so I will go with three stars. read more

I love Leavey BUT it's always full on the 2nd and 3rd floor. You'll find a study spot if you get there early but there's only a select amount of room on each floor for students to study. Your best bet is to go down stairs. The only downside with downstairs is that it's a group study area so inconsiderate people become too loud sometimes in a study environment. Leavey is a HUGE building but only 3 floors are used for students to study??? I think they should open up more floors for students to study because there's so many people on campus and such limited study space in libraries around campus. I def find it difficult to find a spot to study during midterms and finals - they should eliminate that extra stress by offering more study locations to their students. Leavey is the best solely bc it's open so late/early. It's located next to a 24/7 starbucks on campus. This is your place for all nighters! If you're worried about getting home safely during later hours, USC has linked with LYFT in order to get us free rides within the 5miles perimeter around campus at late hours. read more

If you live in the heart of LA, and want a nice place to get work done, I recommend Leavy library, as it's very very quiet and it doesn't smell like the public library does. Nothing special about this library, not too inspiring, but I do like that it's close, fairly clean and very quiet. There's a nice outdoor area to lounge when you want fresh air and a Starbucks next door. You need a student ID after 9PM I believe, but it's free for all before that. You also need SC login to use a computer, so it's best to bring your laptop and use a laptop station on the third floor. read more

Argh I really hate this place because everyone that is in here is sick. Drives me crazy, especially around midterm season/finals season. I'd rather visit Doheny Library over Leavey--plus, Doheny seems like it came straight out of Hogwarts. Leavey is open 24 hours, which is wonderful. They also check out Macbook Pros for free, in four hour intervals (and you can renew them for another four hours.) It saves me the hassle of bringing my clunky Macbook to school. They're usually the newest models, too, because hey, this is University of...Spoiled...well, you know. If you come here during the early AM hours (i.e.: 6:00am-8:30am) like I do, go downstairs to the classrooms/group meeting areas, because they're spacious, and unlike the upper three floors, the air is actually somewhat circulated (upstairs is SO stuffy.) The group rooms are available for booking on the second floor, but the downstairs rooms are all first come first serve--excellent for students who forgot to book a room and want to hold a huge study session for a whole class (I've fit 20 people into one of those classroom study group rooms--huge plus.) Whiteboard markers and erasers can be found in the rooms, but to be on the safe side, bring your own. USC Guest wifi kinda sucks, but if you're a student, just login using your MyUSC login stuff and you're good to go high-speed. I JUST HATE THIS PLACE BECAUSE IT'S SO DEPRESSING ARGH. The basement is the best place to do work at this place. It can actually be somewhat quiet and the PCs and Macs have large monitors to work with. I can be hard to get a study room if you don't sign up early. People reserve the rooms for hours while putting down random people's names to make it look like there will be a lot of people using the room. Wireless internet works in the basement, but good luck getting it to work elsewhere. Bring your own ethernet cable or get one on loan from circulation. Even then, not all ethernet jacks work. The ones that work will have a green dot next to them. See all those signs saying you shouldn't talk on the phone or how talking on the phone in the stairwell is forbidden? Yea. Apparently nobody sees them since that is what everybody does. They talk right next to the sign or in the stairwell, which makes it worse because the voice echoes through the entire thing. A lot of tables don't have outlets either for your laptop. So if you don't need to plug anything in, then great, there's plenty of places for you to sit at. If you do, well, good luck. I guess it is nice that this place is open 24/7. After 10PM, be prepared to show your ID. One star for the basement. And one star for its hours. read more

Leave Library is incredibly depressing, but it has a special place in my heart. I spent many sleepless nights here as a student writing papers I'd procrastinated on until the last minute. They've renovated the space a bit recently, which makes it a more bearable environment. There are plenty of desks, cubicles, & rooms to study in. If you want a larger space or to reserve rooms for your group, you can go online or talk to the front desk about reservations. After 9pm, they kick out anyone who doesn't have a USC ID, but the library is open 24 hours, so it's fondly called "Club Leavey" , especially since it's most crowded late @ night/early in the morning. Despite the renovations, it still feels cramped, & the bathrooms are still abominations. Leavey is a place to visit only as a last resort when you absolutely need a quiet place to study all night. And there's nothing quite like watching the sunrise from Leavey, seeing students & professors going to get coffee & off to class early in the morning. You realize, you've spent your entire night here, & part of you wants to cry, but the test/deadline is fast approaching & you can't spare the time nor energy. Enjoy! read more

When I was a student at USC, I mainly used Leavey for its group meeting rooms. You can book a group room online on the USC Libraries website and it makes it super convenient to meet up for group projects on campus. However, these rooms get booked fast so if you can plan ahead (maybe like a week ahead of time) you'll get a better room/convenient hours. If you try to book it the night before you'll get stuck with crappy hours like 8am or 11pm. I hardly used Leavey to study alone and I never pulled an all-nighter here so I don't really think of it as "depressing". read more

Leavey is the real MVP. It has provided a location to study hard all night (24 hours), a place to hold any group project (you can reserve study rooms through their online scheduling system), a place to get all your printing needs done (remember to give yourself plenty of time to accomplish this... It can sometimes get crowded or the printers/network can sometimes be sketchy), and a place to apply to (and most likely get) a work-study job. With the new renovations (why did you guys wait until I graduated? ) and new patio furniture outside, this place will become even more valuable to many students to come. read more

The downstairs labs were my refuge whenever I was $exiled from my apartment freshman year, and also where I went to register for my dorm-apartment internet. I also pulled a few all-nighters that ended with me taking a catnap on the somewhat-padded-but-still-not-quite-comfortable benches in the hall... at least until the custodial staff woke me up at 5 or 6 am with the industrial vacuums. The most modern-looking library on campus to fit the contents, friendly student staff, good security, and one of the favorite campus fountains (to streak through, drunkenly defile, you name it) right outside. Hey Yelpers!! I am back and hopefully I can write my reviews again. Sorry for the hold up! This review is for 10/27/2012. My friend and I wanted to visit the Campus Grounds of USC. Leavey Library has nothing that can compare to CSUN's Oviatt Library. If you are paying the expensive tuition, you'll be need the Leavey Library to get your degree. From the outside, it looks like an elementary school....a RICH ONE. You'll notice all the bicycles outside the the library. For a moment, I thought I was in the 40s, but then I saw all the students with iPads and Phones to bring me back to reality. Also, the girls laying outside the library getting a suntan was also unusual. I guess you feel far from the beach when you are at USC. The Leavey Library has four floors. Most of the space is for studying. To be honest, I didn't stay long to to know if there were any books. I saw books, but not a massive collection you would think of seeing. There were just more cubicles and computer stations. Did I forget to mention that I was not a USC Student in the Library? Overall, this is not the library that I am used to visualizing. My friend and I may have missed the area that had books since all that quiet literally freaked us out. When it comes to choosing a study spot, this is not my number one choice. Nor is it my number two choice. Heck I usually only come to Leavey at the end of the semester because a lot of my classmates like the group rooms you can reserve when you have to work on final group projects. I don't come here to study personally because this library is overused and there are so many people coming in and out, moving around, typing, printing, copying, working on group projects.... the distractions are endless! I'm one of those people who can't work with so much going on around me, and this makes Leavey less than ideal. One redeeming factor is that the library is open 24 hours, so if you've procrastinated on a project or paper and it's due in 12 hours you can head over to "Club Leavey" and get started. read more

I'm that "she doesn't even go here" girl (mean girls) searching for a quiet place to study for my LSAT test. I have to pay ten bucks to get all day parking so I've paid my dues. Many floors to choose from at Leavey, endless tables, outlets at each. Even a couple "comfy" chairs on each floor. Choose your seat carefully- NOT NEAR THE WATER FOUNTAIN if you'll want to strangle slurpers, for example- supposed to be that the higher the floor the quieter it is. Obviously inconsiderate people are everywhere, so as I said. Choose carefully, or move. Not sure what people are talking about when they say there's food nearby so clearly I haven't explored enough (unless they mean Starbucks...then no. I still say there's no actual food). There is a salad/sandwich bar somewhere on campus, but I got lost and ended up there so not sure where coming from Leavey. (There's also a BAR on CAMPUS!? ASU eat your alcoholic hearts out). During the regular school year there are occasional farmers markets right outside Leavey with food, fruit, some random jewelry, and honey-what I go for(keeps you awake and kicks your sweet tooth while studying) I give four stars instead of five because I went to ASU and our library was open 24/7 for us nerdy night owls. Wrong maroon and gold, but this campus is GORGEOUS. read more

I enjoy going to this library and studying. I prefer this library over the Norris medical library because it's better maintained. I've heard other people complain about the cleanliness of the restroom, but I've never had that issue on the third floor. Annoying how the printers have moved to the 2nd floor. First floor access was ideal. The computers on the 2nd floor for printing are slow and frustrating. Also, for being a campus library, the basement floor should not be a dead zone with regards to cell phone reception. I enjoy studying downstairs but cannot make or accept any conference/group calls with classmates when I need to do work. If I go to first floor where there is reception, there are no private rooms. So my choices are 3rd floor private study rooms and up. EVERY floor should have excellent reception...why does it not? Staff here also take their jobs a bit too seriously. Can't bring food in anymore because some fool(s) must have kept leaving a mess behind after snacking or grubbing on the study tables. Why do u have to ruin it for the rest of us?? If I want to study for 6 hours and want to bring in some food so I can multi-task, I am now told I cannot. Like metal detectors, the staff has become like food detectors. Plastic/paper bags in your hands are asked not to be brought in. Not okay and unfair to others. With all those cameras in the library, messes could be targeted to the individuals particularly. I would totally put up a sign that said "food messes left behind by students will be cited." Additionally, when the Leavey library closes or stops being 24 hours, there should be an email notice sent out to students. A couple times I have come to campus, ready to study for several hours, and the library has been closed due to an event. Come on....not all of us frolic and avoid studying on Saturday's or Sunday evenings or something. It was quite inconvenient that my campus library closes itself every now and then, not being accessible as a 24 hour place as needed by us seriously studious students. Also, why are sooooo many of the square tables off balance? They aren't tightened, or are lopsided, and not flat and stable. Often times there are just a couple tables left to sit at, and when I approach the table, I see why nobody has sat there due to the instability of the table. The tables in this library are of a terrible design. Also, the downstairs basement Samsung television screens absolutely suck. They are subpar. Many I cannot adjust the angle because they droop. Either they need tightening or some repair man to replace something which makes the adjustable as they presume to be but clearly are not. Some of the HDMI cables don't work. There shouldn't be 3 out of 4 working cables in multiple rooms. Just doesn't make sense. Please have them fixed, since our tuition was raised by 3k this semester, please appropriate the necessary funds to have the aforementioned repairs addressed with a sense of urgency USC...Thank you in advance for taking the time to respond to these concerns. read more

i don't attend USC but i needed somewhere quiet to study for my CPA exam. i got SO much done here so i feel like this is a great resource to have in case you need somewhere to focus for hours on end. pros: -tons of little cubbies to claim as your home for the day. -desks are large - you can lay out allll your shit easily -lots of outlets -relatively quiet -they allow food & drink -computer locks available to check out for free -free wi-fi -big windows - good for people-watching and admiring the sunshine -ground zero performance cafe is nearby - they have the BEST milkshakes everrr (http://www.yelp.com/biz/ground-zero-performance-cafe-los-angeles) cons: -visitor parking is $8 - don't really see a viable alternative if you're planning on spending the day here, unless you take the bus? I spent much of my freshman year in Leavey. It's endeared itself to me, despite its habitual annoyances. NOISE The main drag is the noise. People chat, even carry on full conversations, here. Many people don't seem to grasp that it's a place for quiet, individual study. People generally go to the lobby to talk on the phone, although they'll pick up the calls while they're still around other people. There's a general lack of empathy among people studying - perhaps because we've all been frustrated by the interruptions before, we're inclined to pass it along to other people. You should probably listen to music or wear earplugs. PEOPLE Tons of freshman come here. You're likely to bump into a friend or two on a regular basis. This leads to spontaneous conversations, a nice break from studying. STUDY SPACES Leavey offers two distinct study spaces: booths on the second floor, and computers in the basement. Both have their purposes, but I generally prefer the booths. Bring your laptop and books and settle down for a nice marathon. You can and will spend many hours in a row here. There are also group rooms. They fill up fast, so book early. When I went here you could book two weeks in advance. AMENITIES They've got decently fast Wi-Fi, good for doing research or streaming YouTube videos during your breaks. (Funny how those breaks turn into marathon binge-watching sessions..) I got into Far East Movement and Wesley Chan from Wong Fu Productions here, browsing around YouTube. Procrastination can produce wonderful results. They've got copies and scanners - which I believe I only used once, to scan my passport. They also have, imagine this, books! The selection is pretty limited. It's generally popular and current titles, as well as liberal arts books. If you're looking for a specialized publication, you can search online, but you'll probably end up visiting the Doheny bookstacks anyways. TroGro nearby has you covered for snacks. I bought many a Goldfish to accompany me at my late-night study sessions. read more

Leavey Library is a four-story building with an extra room in the basement filled with private study rooms and computers for students, faculty, and staff to use. The second floor also has private study rooms and computers. The third and fourth floors are devoted primarily to study desks in large, open rooms. All of the desks are usually occupied after 8PM on weeknights. Thursdays and Fridays are best if you're looking for a place to study. Leavey closes at 12am on Saturdays but is otherwise open 24 hours a day. read more

Restrooms are the worst! UGH! Beware! It's always filthy in the womens restrooms. The janitors are so lazy. They do not clean it! I've seen them come in and broom and wipe down the counters. That's about it! One day the janitors came in the restrooms twice as I studied facing the restrooms. When I went to use it, the hygiene trash cans in the stalls were still full of garbage and used sanitary napkins. She just broomed. The toilet seat had menstrual blood on it from an hour ago and the janitor never cleaned it when she was there supposedly cleaning. The Indian/Pakistani staff here are always rude and take their monitor jobs too serious. You can't even study because they're staring at you as if they were Korean owners at a swapmeet. I come here only because my friend is a student and pays for the parking. They also do not have a lounge area for students who want to warm up their food and eat, along with vending machines and microwaves. Cal State Los Angeles' library provides at least that for their guests. This school has so much money but lacks cleanliness and customer service! And they have the nerve to ask for donations? pftt NOT! Also it is not quiet! Guests here do not respect the quiet rule. read more

You can't go too wrong with the main library of a major research university, but Leavey is nothing special. Parking is the main drawback-- there's no way to avoid paying, though the new aqua line subway station nearby is huge, of course. The interior is ugly and 70's-ish without good use of windows. I haven't peeked around in the stacks too much. Wifi for students only, natch. Hours are also limited for non-USC students-- I've been kicked out three times, which is a huge bummer when you've driven so far to get there. As a rule of thumb, just don't think of it as a study place of last resort. If you're looking for a place to work on a weekend or evening when other study spots are closed, that probably means you're into student-only hours and will get kicked out. And security is really very tight. Not that I feel comfortable leaving my laptop when I go to the bathroom, either-- the floor layout allows for very few sight-lines, so you can't count on your study neighbors to look out for your stuff. The stuffy, carpeted space is dominated by little cubicle desks, so don't expect to be able to spread out. A missed opportunity for USC and the scholarly community on the east side. read more
