I told him to go ahead but by the time I got off work, he'd left me a message telling me that once they'd gotten the car on the lift, they only needed to lube the linkage. Which was a significantly cheaper repair. I became a loyal customer at that moment. Fast forward 20 years, I moved to Dallas. I'm having clutch issues again and took it to a shop that was close by -- the estimate seemed really high (like 3x what I paid the last time a clutch needed to be replaced). I called Rich to get a copy of the warranty paperwork and I told him what the shop told me. He told me to call them back, get a breakdown of what needed to be repaired and then offered to take a look at it for me. Next to Riley's Pub, Rich's is the place I miss the most. He runs an honest shop, and is fairly priced. If you live in South City, you should never take your car anywhere else!

After exchanging pleasantries, I informed him that I would like a quote on a spark plug and coil. He told me he "needed to see what was really wrong with the car", which I thought was strange since I had told him what I thought the problem was. He took my key, and they took my car to the back for 30-45 minutes. After calling me back to the counter, he told me it would be about $700 to change the plug and coil. I respectfully said that far exceeded what I thought the project should cost and asked for me key back. He then informed me he was charging me $175 for the diagnostics test, claiming they "don't work for free." I felt this was garbage considering no work was done to my car. He then informed me he would be holding my car hostage until Rich arrived in a half hour. I proceeded to call the police. Rich and the police arrived within minutes of each other fortunate, and we went inside to talk. I gave of account of the story to the cops the way it happened. Don blatantly lied to both the owner and police and said he told me he was going to run the diagnostic and that I had verbally consented. The reason I'm telling the story at this point, is because the owner insinuated that I was lying because he's "been sitting behind this man for nine years listening to him talk to customers, and if you had asked him for just a quote, that's what he would have done" In the heat of the moment, I actually forgot I had recorded Don directly contradicting himself. In the video I took, I directly asked Don if I verbally consented to a diagnostics test, and he said "you gave me permission when you handed me the keys." I have attached the video below. My message to you Rich, you called me a liar in your shop and online. I understand why if you been working with the guy for nine years and had known me for less than nine minutes. But here is concrete proof that you guy is a scumbag liar. Your business won't make it another 35 years if you employ scumbags like this. As far as a fair compromise, I gave you $30, to waste two hours of my time and show you your front desk is a liar. I'm the best customer your shop will ever have.
