Exceedingly smoky, even in the non-smoking area "a l'etage", a little grungy, ranging into grubby.
You know that dirty mop smell that restarants sometimes get? Comptoir de l'arc has more of a no-mop smell. But, it's right around the bend from our little peid a terre in Montpellier, and it is open longer hours than most places, and has some stuff on the menu that is exceedingly tasty--most of the little desserts that come with the "put sweet" (C de l'A version of a cafe gourmand) are really nice. Same goes for the beignets de crevetts--essentially shrimp donuts served with a really nice hot/sweet/sour sauce, laced with cilantro, and served with a salad of mache. Musroom ravioli in cream sauce are excellent too. Presca--pork stir fry with a dipping sauce--also worth eating.
We keep remarking at the smoke & the grime, but it doesn't stop us from coming back again and again for very solid eats.
