We were on our way to Sare today and saw a sign for a museum of Basque cakes. Wait, WHAT? A cake museum? In France? Tires screeching, we immediately turned around to go.
From the parking lot, we descended down a pretty steep hill and happened upon a large group about to start the tour. We quickly got tickets and joined them in the house--the visit is only in French, so time to bust out the middle school language skills and follow along.
The whole thing is rustic. You learn a little history about French Basque, how to make cakes (demo included), old instruments and ingredients, and you get a couple samples. The grounds are beautiful, but the experience itself is not worth 8.50 euros. Our guide was as French as French could be, but he also seemed to be ad-hocing at times and the tour ended quite abruptly.
Not exactly our expectation of what a cake museum should be, but a pleasant surprise of a stop on our journey all the same. Apparently they have cake baking classes there, so that might be more worth it. read more
