The grounds of the chateau are spacious and beautiful and they have a pet blue peacock running around the grounds. :) One morning we watched the vivacious owner and hostess, Violaine, as she fed the peacock right outside the chateau's back door, that bird is really tame. The chateau is also the family home so you get to see the family members going about their errands for the day, on the day we arrived, there was a piano lesson for one of the children going on. This, along with Voilaine's hospitality, really made us feel like we were at home as well. The one thing I regret is that we didn't have the chance to have one of her special dinners there, I hear she's a wicked-good cook. This chateau is so beautiful and the grounds so serene, I hope one day to be back.

4.5 stars We had a…read moredelightful, three-night stay at La Rocheliere. The property is beautiful, built into the side of a cave. The location is great and really central if you want to visit different chateaux in the Loire. We made day trips to Blois, Amboise, Chenonceau, and Chinon, and it was the perfect base. We did have to drive an hour each way some days, but it was a good tradeoff to stay in a comfortable place and not have to worry about packing/unpacking and changing hotels The owner, Anneli, was incredibly nice and gave us a lot of great recommendations for things to do in the area. By the third day, I felt like she was family. She took good care of us, and we liked playing with Jaguar, her enormous, playful dog. Breakfast was simple but good, with a selection of bread and croissants from a local bakery, plus butter, honey, and jam. It came with coffee and juice. The rooms are quite comfortable, but not luxurious. I was quite sore after the third night. We stayed in the cave room, which was really cool, but had a few downsides. The cave room is the only room without wifi, because the wifi can't penetrate the cave walls, but you can use the wifi in the B&B's common kitchen/living area. We knew this in advance and chose the cave room anyway, because we thought it would be awesome to stay in a cave room. Also, the room had a bit of a musty smell, but after visiting a few wine caves, we discovered that this is a smell that all caves have, and there's really no way around it. In terms of toiletries, Anneli provides the basics, like soap, shampoo, and towels, but it's probably worth bringing your own toiletries if you're particular, like I am. If I went back to Vouvray, I would definitely stay at La Rocheliere again, but I would choose one of the non-cave rooms. But if you've never stayed in a cave room before and think it would be cool, it's definitely worth a try.

You are to return to the front desk each you leave your room, and then you pick up again upon arriving back. The grounds offer plenty of places to have quiet time with your partner. The view is stunning, and there is even a pool just for dipping. The bar experience was amusing, in that the bartender wrote everyone's order in an old school memo pad and had you write your room number. The rooms are a perfect marriage of traditional and modern. The rooms boast original hardware and ornate details from 300-400 years ago. The restaurant is tucked away in the bottom floor of the main building. You can either walk down the stairs or walk around the building. The breakfast had plenty to offer...fresh fruits, charcuterie, fresh breads, egg options, sausage, bacon, yogurt and more. Dinner was a delicious experience. This place is perfect if you're wanting to break away from busy and enjoy the French countryside.

Starter of foie gras was superb, with marinated cherries perched atop small squares of decadence. Main courses were duck and pork tenderloin. The staff here are just fantastic, particularly Vincent in the dining room. His knowledge of wines and local producers is invaluable. Oh, almost forgot - this restaurant is in a magnificent chateau (or rather a castle). As I type this I don't know whether it is being placed as a review of a restaurant or hotel, but the chateau is incredible.

Yannick, the owner/host was charming and very helpful + he speaks great English! He toured us around the property, which is remarkable. There is a heated swimming pool built into a cave in the hillside (there are "troglo" rooms you can book that are literally caves as well!). Our room had wonderful high ceilings, with a separate sitting room, twin beds which together are "king size". Outside our room was an expansive terrace with nice views of the vineyard next door. Yannick's breakfast was really excellent, with eggs, lots of different meats, cheeses, and breads served buffet style. It was very reasonably priced for the quality of the offering, so a "10" in value as well. We plan on staying here again when we visit the Loire Valley!

At the end of the trip, we both agreed that we wish we had spent more time in Vouvray, and this was largely due to the hospitality of the Bertrands. Absolutely the most gracious hosts we have ever come across, more than we could ever hope for. We had gotten in a little fender bender before arriving in our rental car, and they were so kind that they actually came in with us when we dropped our car off to ensure proper communication (neither of us spoke French very well) and make sure everything was taken care of. Who does that? We were honestly blown away. Gorgeous, well-maintained house. The room that we stayed in was huge and came with a full sitting room and spa-quality bath. Breakfast was delicious, and they even made reservations for us to have dinner at a place they recommended in town, which was amazing. One of the bes meals we had in France. They looked after us as if we were close friends or even family, not just random strangers paying for a place to sleep. If all bed and breakfasts were so incredible, I swear I would never go home.
