There are exposed beams in the room and the ceiling is slanted so the configuration is a bit unusual. I was worried one of us would hit our head on something at some point but it wasn't an issue. My husband is about 6'3" and was fine. If you're much taller, I'd probably avoid the attic rooms. The hotel is great - probably one of my favorite that I've stayed at. The bed was extremely comfortable and the service was very friendly. There were plenty of in room amenities and it was spacious compared to many other hotels. I was a bit concerned about the friendliness going into our stay due to reviews I'd read. We aren't "fancy" people and I was worried that we would feel out of place. It was definitely a nice hotel and a bit more upscale but I never felt awkward being there. The price was also very good in comparison to other hotels we stayed at (realizing that Paris is obviously more expensive than smaller cities elsewhere) so this felt like a real bargain! 5 stars.

And don't miss their tomato soup - it is the best I've ever had. They sell it in their little grocery bistro which has everything you need for lunch or a light dinner as an alternative to a restaurant. They'll serve it for you nice and hot in their lounge, on the patio, or in your room.

We absolutely loved our stay here. It's a small and charming hotel in the heart of Amboise. We…read morestayed on the top floor of the main building and had a wonderful view from our bathroom! Each morning we watched hot air balloons go by :) The room was very comfortable, the staff were kind and helpful, and the location was fantastic. Keep in mind that it's a small building and there is no elevator. A few notes that may be helpful to others: 1) The parking area is through a gravel area. If you have luggage on wheels, I highly recommend you stop near the front door and unload your luggage before parking your car because it's impossible to really drag luggage on wheels through the gravel (you'd need to carry them). 2) Rent a small car! The entrance/exit is on the corner of two one-way streets and is quite narrow to enter and exit through and also to make a sharp turn in either direction when exiting. Having a smaller car will be easier to navigate. 3) They lock the main gate at night for security and there is a small door you can exit and enter through by foot but we couldn't figure out how to exit through there (we had the code to enter from the outside but couldn't figure out how to open it from the inside to leave). They ended up opening the main gate for the cars and we walked through that in the early morning but if you need to leave very early (for example for a hot air balloon tour) before the main gate is typically unlocked you'd need to check with the staff to make sure you're able to exit early enough with your vehicle.

We were greeted warmly by the British/French concierge and made our way to our rooms. Throughout our stay, the staff were amazingly accommodating and friendly. One evening, while sipping Calvados, we were accompanied by the concierge who gave us a thorough history of both the B&B and Amboise. They made an outstanding recommendation for meals (Chateau du Pray). Finally, the breakfast meals were simple but amazing. Fresh fruits, meats and made to order omelets all made the experience very enjoyable. My only complaint, as we traveled with another couple, was that our two rooms were separated. That is, my wife and I stayed in the detached building while our travel companions where in the main building.

The clientele were mostly tours of old couples who had come to see the Châteaux. There was decent room service, the room was spacious and pleasant in a modern way, and the restaurant downstairs makes a decent lunch. We also found it reasonably priced compared to Paris prices. It is however, difficult to find. When the sun goes down you can hardly make out the street names which is unfortunate when you are trying to follow a map. If you are driving there yourself I recommend getting there before sunset. In terms of visiting chateaux, there is one in the town, Chateau Amboise, which is very near but not as impressive as some of the others. The house where Leonardo da Vinci spent his last years is also nearby. We drove an hour to Chateau Chenonceau, which was fantastic, and another 30 minutes to the Sleeping Beauty castle, Chateau D'Usse, which has a fairytale look. I have heard that Chambord is also amazing but that is an hour's drive in the opposite direction, so you might want to stay a few days. Distances between chateaux are quite large, so if you want to see a few then stay longer. The hotel is well-placed if you want to do daily road trips to different castles in the Loire Valley, and it has less traffic than Tours, another city with a good location for visiting castles. I recommend it!
