Ambiance was charming, service agreeable, plates could have been done better…read more La mère jean was my first bouchon expérience in Lyon and it was very nice. However I knew it would not be my only bouchon dinner after trying the typical dishes of eggs in red wine sauce and fish dumplings. I had never had these food before but I know how to cook so I knew something was off. The red wine sauce was thin and watery and the fish dumplings dense and pale. It was a Monday evening so perhaps the best chef had the night off. The wine was very good and the atmosphere was perfectly lyonnaise.

As the name implies, this restaurant is not going to score any points on decor or presentation. It…read moreoffers regional dishes like tripe and fish dumplings. I had the later. The execution was on point. The dumplings totally had pike/fish flavor but so light and delicate. However the star is what lies beneath it. The lobster bisque was insanely good and brought added dimension to the dumpling. It was served with scalloped potatoes. I started with the cheese and salad. I never had cottage cheese so fresh and light. No comparison to the one you get in the market. It was whipped with herbs and olive oil with a wonderful mouth feel. The dessert was a let down. A praline tart. I should have gone with the cheese plate, but I wanted to end with something different.

We were just strolling about Lyons and decided on this place as it had croque monsieur on the menu…read more It was actually an appetizer, and as such, was not as thick and dense if it were the main entree. We sat outside in the bustling sidewalk. I believe lunch started at noon and ended at 2pm. We got in with some time to spare! I got the entrecôte with pommes de terre... oh my goodness! It was truly delectable. The steak was tasty, especially with all that butter sauce lopped on top of it. I used a piece of bread to sop it all up. Hopefully my gout doesn't flare up ‍ The plat du jour came with a dessert of lemon mouse. It was good--but wished it were ice cream since it was a pretty warm and sunny day. We also got a carafe of rose to share. All in all, everything was about 50 euros! That is pretty darn good as the same in the States could easily be double.

We both chose from the prix fixe menu. For my meal, I chose the Menu d'Emile (27 Euros) which is a great deal for the amount of food I was given. For the starter, I had the Salad Lyonnais and for my main I had the Quenelles. Both were pretty good but way way too salty and I love salt! The salad was also as big as an entree so by the time I got to my main course, I could only eat about half. My husband had a fish type terrine that was too fishy for me and the Chabert plate which included a bunch of blood sausages for his main. The cheese course reminded me of tzatziki. By the time we got to the dessert, we had to share and didn't finish of course. Next time I would prob. skip the prix fixe given the portions sizes and just pick an entree.
