(We had made the mistake of booking the very basic, odd Hotel Ulysses, and changed hotels after one night to the Grand Hotel du Midi). While just off the center of the main square, the Grand Hotel is very quiet. (There was a demonstration in the square and we didn't hear it with closed windows). Our room had a nice little balcony (as many do). A delicious hot breakfast was included. Comfortable bed, nice water pressure in the shower. Very good CoVid precautions in place. Parking is underground, and bit of a maze to get to, although the hotel does validate a discounted, reasonable rate. We would stay here again.

There are both grocery stores and pharmacy close by as well as restaurants and bars, although there are better or both in the old city. Front desk staff are pleasant and helpful. All the staff speak multiple languages including English. There is a restaurant and bar as well as a delightful courtyard with pool and hot tub. The rooms are of reasonable size and clean. Doors to the shower room are glass, which means that turning on the light will wake up anyone still sleeping. Toilet and sink are in different rooms. One important note is that only superior rooms get a coffee machine, which cost the hotel one star from this reviewer because I NEED that cup first thing. There are no clothes drawers in the rooms and few shelves, making longer stays challenging. One perk is that the shower rooms have heated towel holders.

For my hotel breakfast I had croissant, baguette, a sweet roll, jellies and honey, a clementine and hot chocolate. I was served a small pot of liquid chocolate and a larger pot of steamed milk. It was delicious. The deaf, house dachshund (named Funey) stopped by for a good morning pet. When I go back to Montpellier, I will stay again.

This does not, fellow Yelpers, make it a ***** hotel or even a **** hotel, or even "palatial" (that 'du Palais' thing noteithstanding). Every room is a little different & the access to your toilet may be a little funky. Wifi fades in and out so this is probably not a place to hang out & stream movies all night. But why would you want to with Montpellier just out your door? The lesson from this review: Learn your * ratings & adjust expectations accordingly.

PROS: - Simon is an awesome manager (and relatively new owner of the hotel), he speaks excellent English, he helped us with late check-in and showed us to our room, gave us suggestions of good food nearby, and directed us to the train station Gare St Roch (5 min walk or less). Thanks Simon! - EXCELLENT location, just steps away from all the activity in Montpellier - Each room is unique and ours was super gorgeous - fancy extra jets in the shower and fancy soap - nice AC for our summer visit!
