A waiting room near the visitor entrance to Le Grand Trianon at Château de Versailles

It's grand. It really is. Le Grand Trianon is luxurious, opulent, magnificent, regal, and, yes, grandiose. Louis XIV wasn't a modest monarch and this retreat château on the northwest edge of the massive grounds and gardens of Château de Versailles is truly grand. It has served many purposes since Louis XIV; however, the Grand Trianon was built in 1688 as a place for intimacy for the king. It served as the primary residence of Marquise de Maintenon who was mistress and second wife of the King from 1683 until his death in 1715. IT was also home of Le Grand Dauphin from 1703-1711. Later, Queen Marie Antoinette lived next door at Le Petit Trianon and used Grand Trianon Galerie des Cotelle for entertainment. These days, Le Grand Trianon is used for receiving foreign dignitaries as an official residence of the President of France. The original furnishings were lost during the French Revolution. During Emperor Napoleon's reign, the Trianon was fully refurnished and served as home to Empress Marie-Louise. This is how tourists and visitors see Le Grand Trianon presented. Don't worry because it is still grand. It really is. * Admission included with a Versailles Passport * Trianon-only admission: 12€ or 8€ * Closed Mondays * Open Noon - 6:30 pm * It is about 2km from Versailles * Take the 8€ "Little Train" from Versailles * Or rent a bicycle, segway, or cart * Spend some time in the geometric gardens * The peristyle colonnade links the 2 wings * The pink marble chateau is iconic * Architect: Jules Hardouin-Mansart * Restored in 1963 * Photography is allowed Le Grand Trianon is worth the time and trip from the main château at Versailles because it truly is impressive, inspiring, and ... grand.

Amazing!!!! Le Grand Trianon is so incredibly beautiful . . . walking through the beautiful setting is like being transported back in time . . . le sigh . . . the apotheosis of a little piggy's dreams (^(oo)^)v c'est vraiment trop fabuleux!

A pink marble palace? Oui, s'il vous plait! It's quite a walk from Versailles to here (although you can opt to take the tram or bike) but I would not miss it when visiting Versailles. It doesn't open until noon so it's perfect to come here after your Versailles visit. While it doesn't match the grand scale and opulence of Versailles, it is nevertheless charming and a sight to behold.

The grounds are just as impressive: beautifully kept gardens, sparkling fountains, and perfectly restored landscapes that make you feel like you've stepped back in time. As someone who loves history, I was in heaven. The palace is filled with artifacts from the Sun King himself, Louis XIV, and the stories about his many mistresses add an extra layer of intrigue. I could have spent hours just wandering the Hall of Mirrors and imagining the lavish parties that once took place there. Marie Antoinette's area, with its charming hamlet and gorgeous gardens, was a highlight for me--so peaceful and picturesque. We spent an entire day exploring and still barely scratched the surface. There's just so much to see and experience! I also have to mention the restaurants on the grounds. The food was surprisingly good--fresh, flavorful, and honestly better than most of what I get back home in America. If you love history, art, or just want to be wowed by breathtaking beauty, Versailles is an absolute must-see. I loved every minute and can't wait to go back!

From there it is a 7 or 10 minute walk to the entrance. You do need to plan for several hours if not the majority of a day to explore the chateau and the gardens. Also, it is very, very crowded, so expect to be shuffled along in a current of people, especially in popular areas like the Hall of Mirrors. We had kids with us that were not impressed by the gilded treasures, so we spent probably more time in the gardens than the palace. Let me tell you - the expanse of these gardens is impressive. At one point it looked like they go on for eternity. Just take your time strolling through and exploring all of the different little alcoves. We did do a boat ride in the Grand Canal lake and enjoyed some snacks and drinks in one of the cafes tucked into one of the gardens. One thing we did not know, is that if you want to book a ride on the train, you will have to do that when you are still at the chateau and they do sell out. You can also rent a golf cart in the same way. Overall I greatly enjoyed all the splendor and grandeur of this magical place. Worth the time and the travel.

Found ourselves getting lost a few times trying to find the place, asked City street workers, retired grandpas, storekeepers- all gave us funky side street directions. Finally asked a young woman at cross walk who happened to be a worker in a nearby office, told us to follow her. She pointed out their ticket office. *NOTE: It's across the street from local nursing college. If you try to enter from other side of estate, you can't. Have to pay a nominal entrance fee. Ticket office is also where the garden's offerings are sold, very seasonal. (Yes, the stuff the former Kings of France dined on, you, too, can also buy it's veggie descendants and dine on, too!). Expensive, as it is organic and think prestige factor. Eg: spinach for $4/lb. Yikes! If you don't care for veggies, they had nougat candy made with honey gathered from beehives in the garden. Also, jars of honey for sale. Pleasant calming experience. Mostly disability friendly, too. Elderly people with canes and saw a woman in a wheelchair enjoying their walks.

We entered Le Petit Trianon and straight away followed the outdoor path to the Temple of Love. We contined on to the Queens Hamlet; a wonderful walkable and lovely stroll that takes you back to another time. There are rustic cottages that guests of the Queen stayed in upon her invitation. Herbs and vegetables grown in the gardens were used for meals. Ilthe property also included a dairy. There are waterways and unique and prized trees planted throughout. We spent more than half of the afternoon exploring this area, so we had run out of time to go inside Le Petit Trianon! Its only opened from 12pm-5:30pm, so it would be best to plan ahead according to what you want to see. There is so much to explore! We enjoyed this more than dealing with the crowds at Versailles. Take the little train one or both ways, ( stops at the grand canal, and Le Grand and Petit Trianon) which was 9 euros when we visited in Feb 2026. Be sure to find out beforehand when the last little train leaves, as we missed it. Its about a 30 minute walk back to the Palace from Le Petit Trianon.

You can rent a golf cart or hop on a mini-train, but if weather permits, the walk is not bad at all. Mom and I came here as part of our day trip to Versailles, and we both loved visiting these little chateaux. While they are both a good bit smaller than Versailles, each is quite grand (in every sense of the word). Mom and I especially enjoyed seeing the furnished rooms and beautiful views from the windows. Warning: the signage is not particularly extensive, so it's easy to get turned around. It's not the end of the world (the gardens are lovely as can be), but do plan for a bit of wandering. Enjoy the peace. Side note: definitely visit the Queen's Hamlet. It's super fun: imagine an interpretation of a small English village, complete with thatched roofs.
