Even though it was 30°C, the breeze and shade from the tall trees made it a perfect spot to enjoy some French fare and people watching. The fresh Burrata Caprese (with pesto sauce!) and Squash Blossom appetizers were very tasty. Probably the the best versions of each I've ever had. I was so full by the time I finished them that I had a bit of trouble making my way through my Lamb Shank entrée. It was lamb roasted with shallots, root vegetables, and a wine sauce, but the meat was a bit over-cooked, salty, and dry. I probably should have chosen a lighter dish. The wine I had was very good though, and it's a beautiful place to dine outdoors!

I had swordfish carpaccio with wasabi "ice cream" of which I still dream. The wine list while brief, was excellent, and our server directed me to the perfect pairing. The service was attentive, but unobtrusive. When we are back in Marseille this is definitely a place we will happily return.

9/12/15: One of the most beautiful restaurants we had the pleasure of eating at in France! The…read moreentire eating area is outside in their very eclectic garden, surrounded by lots of greenery, flowers, and custom modern art made to blend into the very picturesque surroundings. The waiter was extremely nice and courteous with us, despite our not being able to speak a lick of French. The restaurant was busy, but he took his time explaining every single item to us in English. We really appreciated that. You might have noticed now that many of the popular and best restaurants in France require reservations, even if not that fancy. We in fact were turned away at many restaurants previous to this one, and just happened by, and were extremely grateful they were able to seat us. 1. Cafe (coffee) 2 EUR 2. San Pellegrino 5 EUR 3. Beignets de legumes 14 EUR: Not what we typically call "beignets" in America--I think in this case they are referring to the deep fried clumps of vegetables. Lots of different kinds of veggies too--I think you can think of this as French tempura. To be honest, I forgot all the different kinds they had in there, but feel free to check out my picture to get an idea--but there's tons of really pretty colorful leaves, onions, and flowers. And it tasted really great--surprisingly refreshing despite being fried. The perfect fried dish, and dazzling in presentation too! 10/10 4. Veau braise & polenta cremeuse 21 EUR: This is a large single piece of braised veal, arranged as a circle topping polenta, along with eggplant and zucchini on top. According to the waiter it was braised for a very long time, and certainly tasted like it. It was delicious, but perhaps could have been even more moist. 7.5/10. 5. Fine tranches de boeuf & condiments mediterraneen 17 EUR: This is The Most Epic Beef Tartare EVER. So, instead of the typical ultra thin slices of raw beef, theirs is cut relatively thick, maybe a bit less than 1cm thick. The edges are very slightly browned, but most of it is raw like how seared tuna is typically prepared. And there's a couple pieces of fried polenta on top, along with an heirloom tomato salad on the side. But why do I say "epic?"--cause of the amazing toppings on top of the meat! I tried to identify some of it but all I could really recognize are capers, olives, cheese, etc., but there's tons more going on! There's such an amazing array of ingredients used that it is quite a tartare masterpiece! 10/10 We LOVED this place. Definitely one of our culinary highlights here in France! 5/5 #french #Mediterranean #france

I'd been meaning to check out La Cita, a new tapas place, ever since it opened on Valentines day…read more2011, decorating its chalk menu board with kitchy hearts offering special priced couples menus (cue single woman gag reflex). I finally got around to eating here a few days ago with my best friends in town from the U.S. in tow, and it was love at first sight and bite. You'll be charmed by the authentic feel of a cozy Spanish tapas joint, and if the weather agrees you can sit outside at one of the giant wooden barrel 'tables.' Inside, massive legs of jamon hang from the bar, earthy wall tones and Spanish themed décor add to the ambiance. Our server came over with the menu, hand delivered on a chalk board from table to table. It turns out that La Cita is a family affair, our waitress the aunt of the young couple that quit their corporate day jobs to open the joint. The menu was divided into three sections, ascending by price. From column A, we sampled the Pan Tomate (bruschetta), Pan Jambon (ham and bread), Patatas Bravas (fried potatoes in spicy, creamy tomato sauce) and Omelette Espagnole (egg and potato fritatta). All were excellent, and reasonably priced at €2-4 each. From the sea, there were mussels and calamari, and an Iberian cheese plate to finish the meal. The seafood and cheese were slightly more expensive at around €6-8 per plate, but made up for the extra price in quality and larger portion sizes. And what Tapas meal would be complete without a pitcher of Sangria? We ordered a liter of the red stuff, full of juicy alcoholic fruit, not too sweet, and at €8, a steal to get the three of us happily buzzed. When the bill came, we had our attentive server split it in three, and my jaw nearly dropped that the total bill for 8 tapas plates, a liter of booze, and 2 hours of enjoyable dining came out to €15.80 per person, the price one could expect to pay for an entrée at most of the "restos" in Aix. Before leaving out server came by to wish us a great rest of our vacation and a safe return for my visiting friends, sealing in my 5 star review for La Cita, and guaranteeing that I will be visiting again.
