Villa Grecque Kerylos - One of two formal bathrooms for the master and mistress of the house

Lovely to explore on a sunny day! For fans of unique architecture, furniture and decor this place…read moreis a treat. Walking into the entryway I immediately felt like I'd stepped into an issue of Architectural Digest. All the rooms in the villa were gorgeous! From the Roman bath right at the entrance to the open courtyard, library, dining room and main reception room, the Greek Revival style which reminded me of a mix between Art Deco and Art Nouveau in terms of style lines, but with strong Greek elements. The first and second floors are open to the public, and a free audio guide in language of choice comes included in the ticket price. If you listen to all the details in the guide it takes about 45 minutes to walk thru the house. Add on 15-20 minutes enjoying the view and about 15 minutes in the ground floor exhibit and you can easily spend 1.5 hours here. There is an exhibition in the basement/ground level of the Roman ruins in the area, with placards showing their chronological history and diagrams and sketched recreations. They went into a lot of detail though unfortunately for non-French readers these were only in French. Helpful to have a live photo translation app though my cell service underneath stone walls and right beside the sea edge was quite spotty. At €13 a ticket which is prob a bit steep for local activities tho there is a combination ticket for Villa Kerylos and Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild over a few days that's €22. A decent deal considering separate tickets are €30 total. The ticket office associate was friendly and helpful. Take the train from towns along the coast to Beaulieu-sur-Mer then walk 10 minutes, or local buses 607 or 15 which also stop close by to the villa entrance. The town itself is nice to walk around a bit and enjoy the harbor area.

As a classics student I found Kerylos fullfilled so many fantasies of revisiting the lavish homes…read moreof senators and orators who I have read about so often. As if time had leapt back 2000 years... The mosaics and atrium are stunning, and the villa in its entirity is only complimented by the beautiful location on the french coast. I can't wait to go back!
