We couldn't believe that Les Caves offers FREE 60-minute wine tastings, and scheduling could not be easier on Les Caves' user-friendly website. We arrived and were greeted by a lovely, knowledgeable woman who enthusiastically guided us downstairs into an intimate, private tasting room. Les Caves has several private tasting rooms, each below ground and designed as mini caves. For an hour our host guided us through six different local wines, each distinctive in style. At the conclusion, we were free to exit Les Caves owing nothing. Of course, we bought a mixed case of fantastic wine that can't be purchased in the U.S. Les Caves was a highlight of our visit to this legendary wine growing region.

Only 20 minute drive from city center Aix through windy roads of lush green hills and trees. So beautiful thru the driveway and into underground parking. They have a high end restaurant or an out door cafe which is nice after tasting wines or wandering thru the vineyard to see the many sculptures. Brian picked us up from Aix and drove us along a scenic route stretching along Mount Ste. Victoire. We arrived at a local winery where we sampled red, white, and rose wines. We walked amongst the vines, had a great time and eventually made it to a secluded park where we set up a picnic table and drank 2 bottles of rose, ate fresh baguettes from the market and nibbled on fresh strawberries and grapes. All this epicurean goodness while drenched in the golden, Provencale sun and surrounded by the very landscape that inspired Cezanne's paintings. Does it get any better? Only if you have great company to do it with (and I did!). I would relive this afternoon again in a heartbeat. Some quick tips: -This wonderful afternoon excursion was approximately 80 euros a person, which included all the bites, (lots of) wine, and transportation. -I highly recommend it to anyone traveling through Provence who is more comfortable speaking English (although our host was also fluent in French). -Our host was very knowledgeable and personable. If you are serious about tasting wine and learning about it, the Wine in Provence folks have your back. -Wine in Provence offers other great wine tastings, cooking classes and winery tours.

She took us shopping in the market, olive oil tasting, to the cheese shop, the wine shop and back for a cooking class to pair a three course lunch we cooked with three wines. We made a quiche, fruit dessert and a little app and it was all delicious! I can't say enough about this tour. Hilary was incredibly bubbly and knowledgable. She was on a cheek kissing basis with everyone, even the cheese guy who scowled at the rest of the locals. I recommend this tour to anyone and everyone traveling in Aix!

Everything about this winery charmed me. The approach to the tasting room is a long, tree lined…read moreroad, past fields of olive groves, vineyards, and lavender fields. The smell of the air as you step out of your vehicle reflects all these natural products and is delightful after spending time in the city. The surrounding area is beautiful, and it was close enough to Eygalières to make this a perfect stop before or after lunch. The tasting room is a bit small compared to most of the other wineries I've visited, but it is tastefully furnished. They have a large selection of gourmet food items available, as well as their wine and olive products. The staff here were the best I've encountered at French wineries -- welcoming, knowledgeable, unpretentious. In addition to a wine tasting, we were offered an olive oil tasting. The oils here are divine! Perhaps to locals, this is nothing special, but the olive oil is better than any I've tasted in the US, even compared to French imports. I only wish I'd purchased more, as it appears it will be extremely difficult to obtain outside of France. The wines here were good. They were not my favorite of the wineries I tried, but were solid and I think the prices were very fair in comparison to other wineries.

Really. That doesn't happen often. We drove up what looked like a residential street following our GPS and pulled in. No one was around, tasting room not open. But In a moment, someone came out, opened up and let us in when Sebastian came and introduced himself. He apologized for his English, which got better the longer we stayed. He was fabulous!! He poured us some tastings including a vertical of 3 years to let us taste the effects of the yearly harvest variations. We drank some really good wine. Fabulous wine. Since we were the only ones there, he took us into cellar and gave us full exposure. Loved it! Always loved Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines but now I have a new favorite. We didn't end up buying a wine from Chateauneuf du Pape but did buy their value priced wine from the Cote du Rhone for like 10 Euros. Here's a description of the 2013 wine from a website i found: NV Domaine du Pégau "Plan Pégau" Red Blend, France Inky garnet in color, this wine smells of garrigue, violets, and cassis. In the mouth thick powdery tannins wrap firmly around flavors of barnyard, cassis, licorice, black cherry and loamy earth. The barnyard flavor lingers in the finish with a hint of leather. The surrounding area is also very picturesque, so the drive there was very nice. Inside the tasting room, the staff was friendly and welcoming, but did not offer much information about the winery or wines. A bit unusual in my experience with both US and French wineries. The wines I tasted were good, but not as good of a value as other wineries in the same area. I tried their rose, white, red and 100% grenache. I normally do not prefer white wines but enjoyed the white here. They sell a variety of other products onsite. Many of these seemed gimmicky, but I bought some olives and tapenade, without tasting them first, these both turned out to be delicious. I wish we were offered tastings of the olive oil, as I suspect this was quite good as well. I enjoyed the wine I brought back from the winery, but everyone keeps asking me why I didn't pick up more of the tapenade...
