My family & I are in the French countryside (which feels like the middle of farms and nowhere). We were very hungry when we stopped here, and the hostess found the 1 staff person in the restaurant who spoke English. We didn't know till the end of the meal that this staffer was the owner of the restaurant! Not only was the food here delicious (and much more plentiful than normal French portions) but the staff went out of their way to help us. For example, we asked the owner for directions to a gas station (our rental car has a leaky tire) and he gave us directions verbally and then came back to our table with paper and pen to give us written directions too! Brionne is not a destination, as it is a small village (pop: slightly over 4,000) without any…read morespecial attractions around. But, if you have to stay overnight in Basse-Normandie (for example, for a wedding - there are many châteaux around that rent out for such events), this auberge is a very good place. Rooms are basic with dated décor, but they are clean and comfortable, with sufficient amenities (kettle, etc). There's no fans, so it could be stuffy in the summer. The dynamic owner, Mme Depoix, is a most charming hostess, and speaks perfect English. The restaurant is highly commended by critics. We didn't have the opportunity to have a meal there, but breakfast is very good, with fresh bread and excellent local products (cheeses, jams, etc).
