Comptoir Libanais - Mixed grill

Comptoir Libanais

Comptoir Libanais has become, since my initial visit 10 years ago to their South Kensington…read morelocation, a chain of at least 24 restaurants. I've now only seen two of their restaurants but with their colorful, stylish, vibrant decor they are immediately recognizable. The branding is excellent. The Oxford location of Comptoir Libonais sits on the outside edge of a big Westfield Mall and though the decor immediately identifies it, there was something very tired about it. It felt less special and was less pristine than it should have been. Tables were left uncleared for far too long after guests left. My wine glass arrived dirty, with a very small pour (replaced with a large pour, as ordered, and a clean glass when I pointed it out). It took far too long for anyone to come to my table. Despite good food the collection of missteps left a negative impression, like nobody who cares is actually watching over this outpost. This would easily be a 4-star review were it based on food alone but there is no escaping that it is the collection of a dining experience that influences one's overall feelings about a place. Comptoir Libonais Oxford could and should be doing a far better job. (Note: 12.5% service fee automatically added to bill)

The food is delicious! So fresh, packed with flavor, and hearty portions. The mixed grill was…read moredelicious. It was the perfect touch to the mixed grill. There is ample seating in the restaurant and it's connected to the Westgate Shopping plaza so shop and dine or vice versa! They tend to get really busy around dinner time so it's best to make a reservation.

I am glad that middle eastern community is realising that this city needs some authentic middle…read moreeastern restaurants. This restaurant has exceeded my expectations in the authenticity of arabic and lebanese cuisine in Birmingham. I am glad to say that I don't have to plan to go to edgware road in london to have good arabic food. It is all here now. Inside the restaurant they have ample seating space including curtained family rooms. The service is very good, the waiters are well mannered compared to some other arabic restaurants near by where they have no bloody manners. Not to mention any names. When eating out I carefully choose which restaurant to eat, especially if I am dressed up nice I don't want my clothes to stink of the food when I come out of the restaurant and this restaurant is on my top list now. You can't smell any food when you enter. Its clean and well equipped with ventilation system. Even if you are going to sit right next to the Shawarma counter, you won't smell any thing and you will come out of the restaurant still smelling nice with your aftershave of perfumes. When I ordered my food I specifically asked the waiter if the food will be as it is meant to be in middle eastern countries as I told him that I have not had any good arabic food in this city, the waiter smiled at me and said they are all fake. I kind of agree with him. Shwarma is the main dish I ordered to see if the waiter's claims were right about they having the authentic food and yes when the food arrived I was totally blown away. Nice and tender meat of lamb and chicken shawarma as it meant to be.. Lamb Tagine, Humous, Laban, Mixed Kafta they all tasted so tender and juicy with that authentic taste of middle eastern food. This restaurant has got lots of options on menu to choose from starters, side dishes, main courses, desserts, juices, ice creams, cakes, all tasting yummy. Fully recommend this place to all to try. If you are meat eater and like good food, then this is the place to be. Price is right as well, I would say mid range prices as with all the restaurants usually are. Most of the staff is arabic speaking but they do understand english, maybe won't be able to speak much english but they know what we are talking about in english. If you speak arabic then they will give you the best service ever, a bonus I guess. Parking is a problem at day time but in the evening there is plenty of parking spaces available around the restaurant on main coventry road.

I'd heard about…read moreJeita from the manager at the hotel I was staying at, who sung its praises, so I thought I'd stop by and grab a bite to tide me over. It was well after the lunch rush, and before folks started showing up for dinner, so I had the restaurant to myself. I looked over the menu, and decided that I wanted their hommos schwarma starter. After I had ordered it, I changed my mind, and felt I really wanted the spicier version of their hommos instead, the hommos Beiruty. They ended up giving me both, charging me for one, and provided loads of pita. I was looking for a snack, but this was turning into a meal! Anyway, I mentioned that I really enjoyed ayrans, a salted yogurt drink common to the Mideast, and asked if they could make one (it wasn't on the menu). The cook said he most certainly could, and had his own special recipe. Wow. They were not only providing a fairly cheap meal, but also a special drink not even on the menu! Anyway, both plates of hommos were tasty, especially the hommos Beiruty. The ayran, however, was in a class all to itself: it was singularly the best ayran I'd ever had in my life! I finished it, and they came by and filled up another glass (free of charge, no less). I walked out for 16 pounds, and had a bunch of leftovers! I regret with my activities this week that I could not stop by again. But I told folks I knew here all about it. Well worth a visit if you're in Guildford, even for the day.
