I saw several of my Yelp friends recommend a stop at the Museum and I was all in. I could hardly contain my excitement, seeing the iconic bucket marquee. Outside, in the perfectly manicured lot, stand petroleum artifacts from the Sanders early days as a gas station owner. A historical plaque describes the site. The Museum stands where Harland Sanders (the Colonel) once owned a small neighborhood restaurant, called Sanders. Here, his famous fried chicken took root. Inside, is a modern KFC counter. I be placed my order and was given a beeper. The Museum is filled with artifacts from 1940's to present including Sanders furniture, kitchen ware and an evolution of KFC logo packaging and trinkets. My favorite part of the exhibit was a video of Sanders describing how to prepare his chicken. I was truly inspired by his story as an entrepreneur. My lunch was fresher than any KFC that I had ever had. The chicken was crispy and flavorful. The coleslaw was so brightly colored that I knew it was made within the hour. And the potatoes took me back to my childhood. We spent about an hour total at the museum. There is no charge, except your meal. Restrooms are clean. The museum is fun and interesting. I highly recommend a stop, especially if you're a KFC fan.

7/26/26 My husband…read moreand I like to take a cave trip every year for our anniversary. This year, we traveled from Ohio to the Bristol area. Gap Cave was a great stop for the way back home. I will admit that we originally did not go in with high expectations. We saw the $8 price tag and thought that meant this cave must be underwhelming with the price being THAT low compared to all other tours that we have been on. Gap Cave was the 29th cave/cavern that we have visited in the US. When I tell you that we were pleasantly surprised, that is the understatement of the century. We loved the experience of getting to use the flashlights to light our own path while in the cave. The hike to the cave itself is super beautiful. Our tour guides(Lucas, Dylan, and Mackenzie) were amazing. You could see all of their enthusiasm for their job which is always great to see! Gap Cavern has an amazing amount of formations. We enjoyed our tour here more than the Domes and Dripstones tour at Mammoth Cave. The visitors center of Cumberland Gap National Park was also super nice! The employees and rangers were so friendly and kind! We highly recommend making this stop!

It is part of the Daniel Boone National Forest and this park has a picnic pavilion and some primitive restrooms. Lots of parking which requires a $5 self-paid entry fee. There are envelopes and a drop for that. Spend a few minutes checking it out or spend the whole day. At the time of year we visited, we were the only ones around. So quiet and peaceful. NOT TO BE CONFUSED with the Natural Bridge Resort near Slade KY, this Natural Arch is about 1 hour…read moreand 15 minutes SOUTH of Richmond, KY and sits off Day Ridge Road in the Stearns District of the Daniel Boone National Forest. There is ample parking, but requires a $5 fee for a single day visit or $7 for a 3-day pass. Most of the short trail leading to the loop is paved, and contains plenty of man-made steps. TRAIL DIRECTIONS: From the 2nd parking area, take the concrete path to the left of the picnic pavilion then turn onto the asphalt path leading past the Amphitheater. In just a few hundred feet you will come to a beautiful overlook of the Natural Arch where you can stop for some scenic photos of it in the distance. Continue along the 510 trail as it descends down the mountain. There are a series of stairs to help tackle the steepness of the terrain, but don't worry, it's not a long trail and you will reach the arch before you know it. After the last set of steps you will come to a fork in the road. GO RIGHT to stay on the 510 loop trail. Left at the fork will lead you down the 508 trail to Buffalo Canyon. WHAT TO EXPECT: The Natural Arch is nice, but difficult to photograph without a wide angle lens. It is over 100 feet wide and you are in very close proximity. I found the best point of view was taking the loop trail through the arch to the other side. There is a wooden boardwalk to let you know you are on the right path. You can continue around the loop or go back the way you came to reach the parking area quickly. We did not follow the loop and instead returned back to our car. All in all it took us about 25 minutes round trip to hike at a leisurely pace and about 15 minutes to explore the area around the natural arch totaling 40 minutes. It is a family friendly hike, but some of the steps can be tall, so you may have to carry really little ones back. The trail is 1 mile round trip IF you circle the entire loop. I have included some of the PDF trail maps from the USFS website to help guide you. The monument signs maps near the parking area are rather confusing. For example: the monument map states the 510 trail is "not accessible", but it is referring to wheelchairs and for some reason doesn't state it that way. There ARE restroom facilities, but my wife was unpleased with the amount of flying bugs, so we opted to drive elsewhere for bladder relief. About 20 minutes away is the fabulous Cumberland Falls if you are looking for other things to do while in the area. This was a short stop for us as we travel through the state heading to Ohio. Kentucky officially declared its neutrality at the beginning of the war, but after a failed attempt by Confederate General Leonidas Polk to take the state of Kentucky for the Confederacy, the legislature petitioned the Union Army for assistance. As a border state, it had several significant battles between the two armies. The marker is in front of a memorial "In memory of all Laurel countians who gave their lives and in honor of all who served in all our wars to preserve our freedom." Which could possibly include the Civil War if you wish. It is marker number 560, "500 CSA cavalry led by Colonel J.S. Scott attacked 200 USA troops and 98 convalescents under Colonel L.C. Houk here Aug. 17, 1862, killed 13, wounded 17, captured 111 men and 40 wagons. CSA lost 2 killed, 4 wounded. Houk forced back to Gen. George W. Morgan's main USA force at Cumberland Gap. Cut off from supplies, Morgan began his retreat to Ohio thirty days later." It was erected in 1962 by the Kentucky Historical Society and the Kentucky Department of Highways. I mean so damn gorgeous...it was so breathtaking, i would love to see this in the winter and the fall. If you are ever in the area, I highly recommend you going up there. There are several overlooks to pull over and check out and a few picnic tables to relax..along with some hiking trails to investigate and make your own adventures. I can't wait to go back again...!!! I can't wait to go back here again!!! I can imagine the old wagons going over these trails making their way WEST for a new life. I am a huge history NUT...and I love to go outside hiking around. If you are in the area, you must go check out this gorgeous park.

Inside the welcome center you get plenty of information for things do while visiting Tennessee. The facility and restrooms were very clean and maintained to the highest standard.
