What an amazing event venue! I attended the press launch of Belfast Fashion Week and initially when…read moreI found out where it was going to be hosted I was surprised. I thought Belfast's fashionistas would have chosen a more opulent venue but once I entered the Life Church i was blown away by what was on offer. Firstly the location is amazing, about a five minute walk from GV Street Station and opposite a car park it couldn't have been any more accessible if it tried. To get into life church you must first walk under an arch, today the arch was beautifully decorated with fairly lights creating a lovely ambiance on entry. Once inside the venue was much more spacious than I expected although the low roof and exposed beams make it a more intimate feeling. Today we were watching a presentation and the sound carried perfectly. I believe that Fashion week had decorated the venue, and they did a great job. This is somewhere I had previously not been but I am very impressed by what I have seen.

The music and preaching is vibrant and lively. They have a nice cafe facility.

St Columba's Parish Church

St Columba's Parish Church

I have a confession - I'm not an avid church go-er. But that doesn't mean I don't respect others…read morefor doing so, or appreciate the serenity of being inside an old chapel or a new place of worship. I love the old musty smell and the light spilling through the stained glass windows. But most of all, I really appreciate the clergy who are accomodating towards visitors. In St Columba's, visitors are not just welcomed, but encouraged by the foward thinking, friendly congregation to come in and have a look around. You can walk in to the main hall during the day and admire the delicate design of the building, and move through to the small but packed visitor's centre which hosts a wealth of information about the church's origins. Here, you can find information regarding the church, Largs's oldest religious settlements, Brownie and Guides groups and even some sombre war spoils amongst tributes to Ayrshire's military. There is no admission charge and the modest information centre is tastefully displayed and valuable to the town's culture. As for the church itself, there are a number of groups here who host coffee mornings, youth workshops and quiz nights, getting the community involved in ways that don't just revolve around worship. The parish community seem close knit but forward thinking, with Bebo groups and Podcasts set up to get the kids interested. The clergy seem to work hard to not only welcome everyone, but to maintain a healthy community spirit within Largs. Me and my boyfriend stumbled into a bake sale where aside from the cakes, retired ladies were sitting around gabbing and playing chess. There was something cosy about it and everyone was really pleasant, like in the days before life became about IPods and community isolation. Seems like St Columba's have an outreach program that extends to all groups and ages, and a hub of community activity that I haven't seen in a parish for a long time. I was very impressed.

Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle is like marmite. Interestingly, I didn't dislike it, but I…read morecertainly didn't love it. That said, I've established before that my middle name is indecisive, so I'm sure you're not surprised. Love it or loathe it, you have to admit that the Tabernacle is totally breathtaking, and for me, it was incredibly overwhelming... Imagine five dozy teens jammed into the one car, speeding up the motorway, desperately trying to find the turnoff a mere five minutes before the church service begins. [And blast...we missed it.] Cue elaborate plan to somehow get us all back on track towards our destination. The now sweaty, agitated teens manage to somehow evaluate the situation agreeably, and eventually land in the church car park, fifteen minutes late. All of a fluster, the five teens leap out of the car and make a mad dash for the church building. (To say that the Tabernacle is humongous is really an understatement. I've never seen anything quite like it.) People are still rapidly coming in in their droves - unequivocal mayhem. Front foyer is incredible, and the massive gold fountain in the front foyer is really far too elaborate, representing the extent of the church's extravagant ornateness. Welcomed by a series of ushers, the five teens are quickly introduced to their seats on the balcony, staring in awe at the numerous people around them and on the floor below. The choir is magnificent; the band play well; the preacher is all 'hell, fire and damnation', and exceedingly scary; communion is passed around in an elaborate bowl and cup holder, and the service is over. That's honestly how it felt, so overwhelmed was I by the whole experience. The visit was not a negative one, but I am absolutely certain I could not attend Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle every week. It is far too extensive and formidable for my liking. Beautiful church though, and an experience that I didn't forget in a hurry, and one you should try.
