We were treated to the sights and sounds of St James Dalby when we went to view the local radio…read morestation's live broadcast a couple of weeks ago. We stopped by on our way to Peel (St James is 5 miles South) and found fresh soda cakes being made in the kitchen and fresh cups of tea being poured all to which we were kindly treated. The folks there that day, showed us around and explained they hold the World Bonnag Championship annually. They are a Fair Trade church, they have cinema nights and support several charities throughout the year. St James has also just opened their hostel which is under the church itself. It is a beautiful, immaculate room made up of sofa beds, reading areas, a lovely old fireplace and an exhibition lining the walls, sharing their beloved town's history. There is a little commissary off to the side with food, drinks, fair trade items for purchase and it all works on the honor system. Just stick your money and or donation in the box. It also helps that you wake up to a little piece of heaven right outside the windows.

It is almost as far north as you can go on the IOM, we visited on a sunny weekday in June and encountered only one other couple. If you are a birder or nature lover this is the place for you. No tea room but a nicely curated visitor center staffed by a friendly volunteer, they also have a small gift shop with unique items that benefit the Wildlife Trust. And if the need should arise, there is a portable toilet available, nothing fancy but clean. The Visitor Centre, which is a good place to orient yourself, sits within the sand dunes, an area which stretches 8km from Cronk-y-Bing to the Point of Ayre. A site of major ecological significance, parts have been designated as an Area of Special Scientific Interest and as a National Nature Reserve. Leading from the beach, the marked Nature Trail winds through the dunes. The beach provides a great walk too, with plenty of birds to watch including diving gannets, if you're lucky. You might even spot an occasional seal. It's remote and beautiful.
