Its one of those buildings that you just have to check out if you get the chance as there aren't too many of them left. Buildings like City Hall offer us a beautiful look into this city's past, showing us the architecture of the time and how far we have come, allowing us to imagine how things were when our parents or grandparents saw them with their own eyes. I was fortunate enough to take a good look around the inside of this place before they started the restoration/renovations a few years ago and I remember telling myself 'wow, this is breathtaking, I want to live here, move out council officials I'm moving in!' - Unfortunately that didn't happen...but my attempts at staying there for an extended period one day went quite well until my friends and I were kicked out...No I am not a squatter although I suppose you could label what we were doing as that...We had decided one day to get into the lift, take it to the top of the clock tower and see how long we could stay up there without being asked to leave. You see the view from up there although obstructed by the architectural monstrosities of today is still worth the trip. I hope they will allow the public to go up into the tower once more as last I heard they restricted access long ago (maybe the restorations will change that). I cant wait to see what they have done with the place!

A summary of a typical experience with the RTA can be found in my online form and email response…read moreexchange, featured below. The experience of dealing with the RTA sucks, but this doesn't mean you can't throw around some healthy humour to liven the atmosphere, does it? From: Karene Enquiry: I and two other people have been renting at this address since April. Our first quarterly bills for electricity and water totalled around $450 and $10, respectively (the owner pays for a set proportion of the water). The following quarter, our bills came to around $1,000 for the electricity and $116 for water. We were shocked at the magnitude of the bills. A few weeks later (around a month ago) our hot water stopped working. After a few days, the real estate agent replaced the hot water system entirely. The plumber & electrician they sent out originally confirmed with me that our extremely high recent bills (electricity doubled, water higher by x10) may have been owing to the faultiness of the hot water system, which he said was extremely old, rusted and small for a dwelling of our size. I am wondering whether we have a case in terms of going to the owner/agent and having reimbursement given the extraordinarily high nature of the recent bills and the fact that the hot water system had been malfunctioning without our knowledge. ----------------------------------------- From: enquiries@rta.qld.gov.au Dear Karen, Thank you for your enquiry. Where possible, I have referenced the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008 (the Act) in the following information. The RTA encourages tenants, residents, lessor, agents and providers to resolve disputes themselves, by talking and listening to each other, and finding out about their rights and responsibilities under the Act. The Act provides ways for tenants and lessors to resolve disputes themselves. If the parties involved have been unable to resolve the difficulties themselves, they may seek assistance to reach a resolution of the issues by lodging aDispute Resolution Request (Form16/Form R16) before they can pursue the dispute at the Tribunal. Some matters are considered urgent under the Act and do not require dispute resolution before applying to the Tribunal. http://www.rta.qld.gov.au/form_16.cfm - is a link to the Form 16 I trust this information addresses your enquiry. Should you have any further enquiries regarding bond and tenancy matters, please do not hesitate to contact the RTA Contact Centre on 1300 366 311 (or +617 3046 5400 if overseas). Yours sincerely, Client Contact Services Officer | Client Contact Services --------------------------------------- From: Karene Subject: Employment Opportunities Dear Hiring Manager at the RTA, I am writing to apply for a position in your Internet Response Team, after recently using your Compliments and Complaints service myself as a tenant. I am extremely adept at answering a question without answering it at all. I can do this verbally by making non-committal "hmm" sounds and also in a written communication form by simply copying and pasting a paragraph or two of legalese from a relevant website. I have over two decade's worth of experience of copying and pasting text and three decades experience in turning a blind eye to someone in need. My parents instilled this trait in me from a young age, and it's not something you can necessarily "just learn". If someone writes to the RTA to complain about sexual abuse from their owner/agency, I am fully convinced I could reply quoting only a few lines of pasted legislation and add nothing extra (e.g. personally addressing the complainant/issue). Not only could I do this well, it would take mere seconds. At present, I am seeking a position where I can work within a quasi-government environment, as I believe people make the workplace and if others don't care that means I don't have to, either. I can provide a copy of my resume if necessary. Thank you for your consideration of my application. Sincerely, Karene A. --------------------------------------- The guy ended up sending me back numerous links to working with the RTA, with a bit of legislation about how the client response team aims to please. They need target practice.
