Fabulous salon, all around. On this particular salon visit I was in to get my hair colored. I went to Kim & she was absolutely amazing - highly skilled & doesn't beat around the bush with what will or won't work with you & your hair. As I was in the seat, she kept coming up with more ideas with what we could do to my hair in the future. She is definitely passionate about creating great hair color! I think for cuts I'll head straight to Laurentius Purnama himself though - Ive heard incredible things about his skills all around town so I gotta give him a try at least once! The salon itself was just awesome too. Very mod design, upbeat feel, upscale but definitely not stodgy. & I was totally won over by the Al Hirschfeld piece thy had on display of Audrey Hephburn. Ooooho man I've ALWAYS wanted a Hirschfeld!! So jealous!! ;) All in all my experience was very pleasant & everyone there made a nice effort to make sure I was always comfortable and happy. I can definitely see myself making return visits. Also, there is complimentary parking in the lot across the street. Very convenient! I am a salon snob, so believe me when I say this place is fantastic and you should absolutely come here. In a past life (aka college) I was a salon coordinator, so I have certain (extremely high) expectations for atmosphere, professionalism, and quality of service. I'm also wary of trying new places - while I'm hair-adventurous with a stylist I know and trust, I hate the risk of a new place or a new stylist because you just never know what you're going to get. But flying back to Chicago every few months for a cut & color was becoming financially inconvenient, so I was on the hunt for a shining star here in Philly. One of my co-workers always has fantastic hair so I asked her for a recommendation. She sees Laurentius himself but he's out of my price range (he's so expensive that my friend was too embarrassed to admit how much she pays!), so I called the salon and just asked for whoever was available on the day and time I needed. Scott gave me a great haircut and was super fun to chat with. He's really mellow but also very precise with his work - you can tell he truly cares about every single cut he does. A few weeks later, he trimmed my bangs free of charge and actually cut into the style a little more so I was happier with how it was laying - he went way beyond the typical quick bang trim. Fast forward another few weeks and I decided it was time for some professional color - as snobby as I am and as embarrassed as I am to admit it, I was box-dying, and last month I was in a hurry and grabbed a color that was a few shades darker than I like, so once enough of it had washed out, it was time to have a professional coax it back to where I like it. Rachel did my color, and it turned out wonderfully. She lightened it a little first to lift some more of the darkness, then turned me into the prettiest redhead you've ever seen. She upsold me on some kind of rinse that nourishes and helps with tangles (my wet hair is like a jungle) but it was totally worth it. AND she cuts too - so I splurged. I love the way she cut my bangs (with a razor) - very edgy and cute - and she got rid of all the split ends that were bugging me. Laurentius is a rock star stylist... literally. He's done lots of famous locks... and he's at least as good at what he does as those musicians and actors are at what they do. I can't possibly say enough good things... there just aren't enough superlatives. His salon is fantastic... the decor is amazing, everyone who works there is super friendly and they're all pros. Hair... Laurentius is the best. Not too long ago I thought my hair was a complete disaster. Laurentius worked his magic and I was happier than I'd been with it in a long time. I've heard him telling clients he's been thinking about them, and that he has ideas for them... he means it. He's done that for me too. He never stops thinking about his work... because he's an artist... and I don't think it's work to him... he lives it. Not surprisingly, he's also fabulous with make-up (and recommendations for fashion and accessories... he knows what's new and what works for people). Nails... Laurentius works with Robin Campbell... she's as much of a perfectionist with nails as he is with hair.... it's a terrific combo. Get the Balinese pedicure... it's SO worth it... talk about relaxation and outstanding results. As an added bonus, Laurentius is great with kids, pets, moms, friends... he makes everyone comfortable. My hair grows super slowly and he is the only person on the planet I would ever trust to do whatever he wants with it. Look, they got it right in Philadelphia Magazine when they named Laurentius Salon as the best salon in the city this year. It is simply amazing there. I've been to many salons and barber shops in my life. I've paid $10 for a haircut (with clippers and some Club Man splashed on) and I've been in some of the best boutique shops in town. Laurentius is the best....by far. The total experience is great. You can tell they love their clients. From the moment you walk in you're part of Club Laurentius. The place is visually gorgeous -- all white and silver and super modern -- and there are a lot of smiles from the staff and patrons alike. Oh, did I mention that Laurentius gives me the best haircut of my adult life? Yeah, he does the stars of screen and runway, but he spends a lot of time on Philadelphia knuckleheads like me, too. Go to Laurentius and you won't go anywhere else again. I used to love that old Mercedes Benz commercial that used the line, "My father always told me to choose the very best. I LOVE LAURENTIUS AND HIS TEAM!!!! The salon is modern and beautiful and everyone there is so friendly! My hair and nails always looks amazing when I leave. Laurentius is an amazing stylist! He'll look at your hair and make suggestions to enhance your hair and do what is best and most healthy for your hair. At first I was worried that he might be a little snobbish since he's worked with celebrities (Britney) and is called upon for numerous ad campaigns (Rolex, Allure Magazine) but he is SOOOO NICE!!! Soooo I really wanted to like this place...but was dissapointed. I'll try to give credit where credit is due - The employees were all friendly which was a plus. I can't stand snobby salons and this definitely isn't one. The salon is very modern and bright and pretty...but so are a lot of high end salons. Now for the real reason I went here...just for a basic cut nothing else. My stylist Nicky was super cute and nice but my cut was terrible! I have a short bob and wanted just a trim, nothing fancy when I was trying out a new hairdresser, but it ended up uneven, heavier in places, and just overall unimpressive. It was $50 and I felt like I could have gotten the same cut at a walk in chain store. After washing and drying it myself I was still just incredibly unhappy. To the salon and Nicky's credit, I went back and she fixed it as best she could and was incredibly nice about it. I can't speak for the other stylists but I probably won't try this place again. My hair was a piece of art, I almost didn't want to touch it. Scott spoke about the best cut for my face, fixed up my color, took the time to explain how to properly blow-out (front to back), and the whole she-bang. It's an ultra-modern salon, that appears somewhat pretentious, but not quite. The stylists are pretty chill (at least mine was) and the owner greets all of the patrons and makes you feel like a million bucks (and considering he's worked with enough celebrities and models, he knows how to schmooze... loved it!). My hair would rate this place a 5, but after the mild heart attack I suffered when I got my bill, my wallet gives it a 4. Don't forget to tip your hairdresser AND their assistant. read more

My friend and I came here for a mani and pedi after seeing all the great reviews in Instyle and various magazines. I have only one word for the experience...underwhelmed. The biggest draw to why I wanted to try out this place is that the nail polish lasts about a week or longer and usually my polish last only a few days. This did not happen...both my friend's and my polish only lasted a few days. For the amount of time and price..I would not come back. I would not recommend this salon. The receptionists are not welcoming and give no eye contact. The owner's dog took a dump right next to my feet. I was not moved from the upstairs stinking room nor did the owner apologize. I am also unhappy with my hair color, as my roots are a different color than the rest of my hair. It looks bad. An extremely extravagant friend treated my hair to a cut from the salon's namesake. Laurentius is a gracious a human as is imaginable, the arc of his career is utterly fascinating and his affection for his wee one is enthralling. I could have lingered in his chair for days listening to his stories. More importantly, I was impressed with Laurentius' analytical approach to hair-cutting and the precision of his cut. The cut was so architecturally sound that it held its shape for more than four months. I would award 4.5 stars if I could. I, however, cannot award five stars because the cut was quite pricy for this neighborhood. I will definitely consider a return visit for a special occasion. read more

I'm so happy that I got Scott as my stylist. I was in desperate need of a hair cut but had no idea what I wanted to do with my hair. Scott was great and knew exactly what would work for my face and lifestyle. Even though I was his last client of the day on a holiday weekend, he took his time and made sure my hair cut was perfect. The salon itself was chic and clean. Everyone seemed friendly, chatty, and happy. Plus, they have a private lot across the street from the salon! This perk alone sold me when I was looking for a new salon to try. I don't know about you, but looking for parking in the city is never enjoyable...and the Philly metermaids are horrendous. While my loyalties for hair remain elsewhere, the staff at Laurentius Salon seem to be some of the best in the business. I understand that the owner, Laurentius himself, is a favorite of the likes of Britney Spears and magazine editorial staffs. With a background like that, I suspect he's pretty capable at all aspects of hair care. Rather, tucked away on the second floor in her little nook, is Robin Campbell, and her meticulously organized nail polishes, which warm my heart. Robin is one of the most dedicated manicurists ever, and likely the best in the city. She's attuned to your skin's type and reaction with different polishes, so she can help find one that will last the longest for you. Her gel manicures are unlike any elsewhere in the city, and her personality is one of the best to be around. Robin has bestowed me, friends, and family, with the best manicures and pedicures--lovingly and expertly shaping, buffing, smoothing, and polishing all ten or twenty nails. In her hands, you know you've come to the master. Every visit with Robin is a few hours or so of respite from reality--just the best conversation and the best nails to match. I always go in and tell him to cut away and am always satisfied. I've always experience good customer service from the receptionist to Scott. Having moved to Philadelphia from a few states away (and my stylist for the last 13 years) I was nervous about trying to find a new, local magician. I have worn a whole range of colors and cuts, lately sticking to a bold, ruby red. Reds are hard. I know, because I've had pinks and oranges and headaches and disappointments from a red effort, or few, gone wrong. Ashley had saved me from a bad haircut a couple years ago, which helped me try a funky short cut that I had been weary of forever - I loved it, and couldn't believe short hair could have ever been for me until that 'do. As that grew out, somewhat awkwardly, she helped me maintain a shape that made sense for quick styling and low maintenance that didn't make me feel so awkward after all. I've opted to grow my hair out long once more, and she's evened out layers, added volume to my not-so-thick locks, and given me honest opinions in a soft way when a color I've been thinking on just won't make sense with my skin tone or when a cut I'd like may be more work than my schedule allows for. That's something I can appreciate, because I know I can trust her to steer me in a better direction instead of giving me something I said I wanted but maybe didn't mean. Over the summer, I was restless. Having vowed to keep scissors away for a while, I went back to the idea of a familiar red color. Ashley had proven to be nothing short of a miracle worker with shears, and her hair is always a vibrant, impressive, beautiful shade of nature, ranging from cool blues and greens to firey oranges. Not only did she give me exactly what I had pictured when trying to tell her what it was I wanted, but she took it one step further to add a hint of color that just wouldn't work as an all-over deal to give the red tone a unique purple pop under certain light. I couldn't be more happy with Ashley as my permanent hair hero. She's receptive, pays close attention to details that even I miss, and has yet to disappoint me in any of the countless times I've been in her chair. I chose to go to this salon because I asked a woman in line, in front of me at the grocery store where she got her hair done, as her hair looked great! She said Laurentius. I did not realize that I should have asked for the name of her stylist. Apparently it was the eponymous Laurentius, himself. He charges $150/ cut. Add to that the person who washes your hair, and tips for the hairstylist and hair-washer, and you are at $200 to get your hair cut. That doesn't include any other services/processes.. I made an appointment with a regular hairstylist, since I could not afford Laurentius, himself. I was told he is fabulous. I told him I thought it was time to go back to bangs, since my hair in the front was getting caught in my glasses. I told him that my husband likes my hair a bit longer, but I don't like to spend the time blow-drying, so I wanted something in between. He gave me a trim! Took about 1/4" off, and brought my longer bangs down to the least level possible. Total cost with tips - $100. It was a nice cut, but not what I asked for. I told him I was looking for a different look, that would take less time to blow dry. NOT!!!!! Very disappointed. Please note that a lot of the reviews for this business are more than 3 years old, and many more than 10 years old.. Therefore, the overall reviews on YELP are irrelevant today. The prospect of getting my brows waxed scares the living shit out of me. I get this bright red strip across my forehead and my skin gets all inflamed and gross. So I try to avoid it. Whenever I leave this place I look and feel like a supermodel, thanks to Kim. In fact, I have literally left, walked around the corner, and been stopped by someone to tell me how great my hair looks - on more than one occasion! I usually give her a general direction for my hair and she runs with it because after all, she is the expert. It is always understated, sophisticated and beautiful. I never want to go anywhere else. The salon itself is beautiful and impeccably clean. I've never found the service to be rude, only pleasant, even from Laurentius himself, who's got clientele to brag about. They always have water, coffee, tea, even champagne on hand, as well as a plate of Isgro's cookies :) I love the little touches, like the flowers all around, grown in Laurentius' garden. No one is ever cutting my hair again, unless they work here. After a woeful summer I decided I needed a new start haircut. The kind of haircut that made people say, oh my god! look at your hair! I briefly toyed with dying it different colors or chopping it all off before I decided the best choice was to leave it all to the experts. I sat down in Laurentius' chair and told him he could do anything. I felt immediately comfortable with him and trusted him with my hair. He gave me some ideas and I told him to do what he liked. My hair was expertly washed, which was really relaxing. Then Laurentius started in on my haircut. He was super fast, and as I watched the style take shape I just got a big grin. The end result is awesome--definitely a positive response. I love it. I've been here for a pedicure as well, which was a great experience. Robin was meticulous. My feet have never been so smooth before. And the treatments were great--I did one with fresh egg brushed on my feet. It was really very wonderful. Nicki, who I've also seen for cuts, is so sweet and always remembers me. The ambience in the salon is also wonderful. The white could be cool but somehow comes across as pristine and calming. As a side note, people have mentioned prices. Its certainly not cheap, but in my center city salon hopping it seems pretty much in line with other places. Some treatments are actually a little less then the places around Rittenhouse. I walk from Center City to the Italian market to come here and its totally worth it! read more

i absolutely love and adore laurentius!! i've known him for quite some time now back when i used to model and he was my first makeup/hairstylist. he was amazing then and even more amazing now. no wonder he has the clientele that he does...he makes everyone feel like a rockstar and like you've been friends forever and i completely trust my hair in his hands. i wont let anyone else cut it.. he also spent extra time to give me styling tips and showed me different looks..curls, loose curls, straight etc his salon is very sleek and modern, staff is extremely friendly and accomodating. theres also a private lot across the street for free parking. i just get a cut there, i dont color or anything so i can't comment on that but i heard all his stylists are extremely talented and recognized for that as well. everytime i leave that salon i feel wonderful and people always compliment the haircut and style. read more

I have been to Laurentius twice for a decent haircut and blow dry. He was booked up for weeks, so I went to Kim Tran. Total disaster. My hair is way too short and totally uneven. I am cutting pieces of hair that are an inch longer than my hair cut all day. The left side is way longer than the right side. I called to see if Laurentius could fix it and after 3 days they called me back and said that the only person that could fix it is Kim. Why the hell would I let someone that botched my hair the first time come back for another disaster. Laurentius obviously does not care about my hair or my business. I will find another salon. Writing a belated update because I just realized that I had posted that I was a fan of this salon's use of organic hair color, but I had to quit going here because they stopped carrying the organic stuff. For the record, the "organic" that they used wouldn't pass my standards now anyway, but I originally had sought this place out based upon an article that was written about them in which they had advertised using organic hair color. The day before my last appointment, the salon called me to say that they had stopped carrying the organic color I had been using because they weren't getting the results that they wanted from it and told me that I was the only one using it. I totally appreciated them calling and letting me know, but I had to stop coming here as this is super important to me. (I now do my own color because it has become so important that I do not even trust the "organic" stuff that is salon quality). I still love Ed and Laurentius and highly recommend Ed's cuts and the atmosphere here is great and not stuffy like so many other places, but I had to update my original review because I did not want to lead anyone astray. read more

I have been with Kim Tran for over 10 years and followed her to Laurentius Salon. Before her I had overly processed hair that always looked like it was dyed. Kim has magical hands and some serious coloring skills. She is absolute expert with Blonde and when I decided to go darker she pulled that off flawlessly too. I am not one to leave reviews but, after following my colorist to a new salon, I felt I just had to. I have been getting my color done by Ani for years. I have truly never been disappointed. From the funky and wild colors of my mid 20's to the natural look I now prefer, she has alway delivered. She is also very sweet and I always look forward to my visits with her. I was constantly upset with how my color looked until I saw someone's hair I really liked and asked them who did it. They of course told me about Ani and I have been happy ever since! The new salon she works at is truly a wonder. It's sleek, modern and immaculate! To be honest, I went to her despite of her old salon, which seemed a bit mismanaged. When I first arrived at the salon I was really amazed when the owner came over to me, introduced himself, and thanked me for my business!
