From the front desk to the nurse, the doctor and the therapists all have treated me with respect and dignity. All staff are very knowledgeable about eating disorders and how to treat the whole person and not just the disease. I have seen two nutritionists, a psychiatrist, two doctors, two nurses and a couple of the therapists. I have been in their outpatient and PHP programs and I would say the care I have received only improved over time. I would highly recommend seeking treatment here as a first stop or as one of your stops in your recovery journey. I am constantly impressed by their care and have felt supported every step of the way.

The recovery process takes a lot of time and effort, but it is worth it. I have been a patient at Charis for almost 9 months so far. I am not sure when my journey will end, but the visits reduce in frequency over time.

My trauma history was controlling so much of my life, I felt I couldn't bear much more suffering. I could have never imagined the level of peace and clarity I now possess. Emma Chiriac offers psychotherapy and somatic coaching in English, Romanian, and Spanish. Currently, mid pandemic, Emma is operating online and providing therapy and coaching via Zoom. She offers a free 20 minute consultation for you to ask questions and to determine if you're a good fit to work together. Personally, I walked away from that interaction looking forward to starting our work together. Living with unresolved trauma history, or PTSD, can be a living hell. My brain and body felt like my captor, from which there was no escape. I had tried nearly everything that western medicine suggests as treatments for trauma, and nothing had worked for me. Some treatment even aggravating my trauma responses, as I felt further traumatized and misunderstood by several medical professionals. Emma works under a completely different model than what people typically think of when you imagine a therapist. This wasn't just "talk therapy," it was somatic coaching. While I was driven to her for this very reason, I was so shut down and guarded, that it was difficult for me in the beginning. But Emma was incredibly patient and even nurturing...something foreign to me when working with a therapist. Despite whatever happened in our session, I would still leave feeling hopeful and like I was, and would continue to, make progress. We had some major break thrus in our work together and the work became easier and easier. There was suddenly a shift. I no longer felt as if I were one tragedy away from "losing it." As I became more aware to how my body warned me of incoming trauma responses, utilized new coping, self soothing and grounding skills, the more my window of tolerance and confidence in my abilities grew. While I still manage triggers, my responses are much milder and I'm typically able to quickly ground and regulate myself. My chronic illnesses are often blamed on childhood trauma, yet, that use to make no sense to me. No one could really explain WHY, just quote statistics and push pills as the answer. Emma was able to help me make the connections, understand it all, and then put in place strategies for self care, awareness and regulation. As a result, I've had a tremendous ease in my chronic pain conditions. I am incredibly thankful that Emma came in to my life. Her guidance, compassion, and encouragement have had such an impact on my life, it can be felt by my friends and loved ones. Sarah Baumgartner has been an asset in dealing with challenges that have come up. She holds a group for teen girls every few months. There are other experts available for all ages at this location, including a psychiatrist and psychologist, with several methods and focus matters that include, but are not limited to ADD/ADHD, OCD, family issues, substance abuse, self harm, eating disorders, anxiety and depression. Each therapist keeps their own schedule and hours. Many at this practice accept credit cards and file insurance. The office environment is relaxing and nurturing. We've been very pleased to have someone help to mediate or offer understanding and suggestions for how to handle and best overcome circumstances that sometimes become a temporary roadblock to life and allow her to blossom and realize her full potential.

I have been to Southside Counseling Associates a few times now and can honestly give them five…read morestars. They offer counseling services for many needs and have several independent practitioners here according to the brochure I picked up from the waiting room as well as their website. I have personally been seeing Richard (Rick) Payne and am happy so far. He is easy to talk to and has been quite helpful. I found him through a Catholic psychologist whom I could not see because of my insurance issues. Thankfully, Mr. Payne is able to take patients with insurance through the Healthy Indiana Plan. Prices are also more reasonable than what I have encountered in the past. What makes me most at ease is that he is of the same faith as I am though this is not pastoral care. Another plus in my book is that this is a small building and not a large office complex. There is no receptionist or call center and I can speak with or text my counselor directly. The waiting room is usually serene with none to very few people. The first time I walked in, I was amazed at the cozy and nicely decorated interior. There was calming music on with bird sounds in the background. They also provide a nice selection of magazines and books contrary to what most offices have. It is homey which makes sense since it is a little yellow house with green shutters right on Main Street in the older section of Greenwood that has been converted into a business. It is honestly like no other mental health office I have ever visited before and in a very good way. My only issue is that I wish it were closer to home, but it is quite worth the ride south of the city for excellence. Parking is in the rear, as is the entrance. There aren't a ton of parking spaces so it could become tight if there were several cars here at the same time, but you can park across the street as well if needed. Afternoons seem to be much less busy than evenings as I am sure many people come by after work for their appointments. I am grateful that they do offer evening hours. Again, I am new here, but I am pleased with the care I have received. It far surpasses any services I have had in the past. I only can speak of my counselor in particular on a detailed level, but if you are in need of counseling services, I highly suggest giving them a go. I am sure they would have someone to fit your needs with the variety of expertise that these independent counselors offer.

My daughter is depressed after the death of her boyfriend and I made several attempts to call and schedule an appointment. They have no receptionist and never returned my calls, even after I said that if they are not accepting new patients to please let me know. We have insurance, but I also would have been able to pay for each session if that was the problem. For counselors, they don't seem very concerned with someone's mental health.

We have now been working together for nearly 2.5 years and my experience with her has been life changing. However, I have had some major frustrations with the office side of the organization. There are also some policies that can greatly affect a person with state insurance that are not given up front. It was pretty smooth sailing for quite some time. Before Covid, the receptionist was very kind and warm. Now, all sessions are online, indefinitely, and only a recording answers the phone. For some time, the only thing I really despised was the tiny bathroom available to clients that always seemed dirty...if they ever reopen, they should redo that closet of a bathroom. After about a year of working together, I was warned that my therapist would be gaining her license soon and that they do not accept state insurance for their licensed level tier of therapists. CTS is listed as a "training center for master's degree students and post-graduate counseling residents." My therapist had moved here from Colorado and was practicing at CTS to earn licensure in Indiana. So she was already experienced and I was making great progress with her help. I was not interested in starting over with a student/resident. To continue, we scaled back on the frequency of my sessions so I could afford to pay cash. I see this being extremely problematic for those without the means to finance their own mental health, after they've bonded with a therapist. The most concerning thing, that has affected me most, is their failure to comply with multiple requests from Social Security for my disability claim. Even after they insisted they had sent the requested records, but hadn't, they became pushy about me resubmitting their online release of information form and a copy of my drivers license because "they lost the original." For the sake of a chance at them submitting the paperwork in my appeal, I did so, but...I'm still salty about it. As with any counseling "center," your experience is going to vary greatly according to your situation and the therapist you choose. Here, the business end could use some improvement.

I've long been familiar with the Christian Theological Seminary Counseling Center, a clinical…read moresetting designed to provide a training ground for CTS's master's level students and post-graduate counseling residents who are part of CTS's COAMFTE accredited Marriage and Family Therapy program and Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. Fees for services with graduate interns are on a sliding scale and are typically discussed in the first session. The counseling center is located on the South end of the Butler University campus. It's worth noting that CTS sold its land and buildings to Butler University and is now actually renting its spaces. I've gone to CTS's counseling center more than once - partly because I appreciate its spiritual core and partly because of the aforementioned sliding scale counseling services. Due to the pandemic, CTS is limited to telehealth appointments at this time. As most churches are starting to open up, here's hoping that they return to at least a hybrid arrangement in the near future. Christian Theological Seminary is a Disciples of Christ seminary. It leans toward a more progressive theology, though it certainly embraces the full spectrum. That said, I think a lot of folks would be surprised that at a seminary counseling center you can definitely find counselors/therapists willing to and quite skilled at dealing with a wide variety of issues. I've typically found the counseling center to offer a diverse staff. They try to honor requests - for example, as a sexual assault survivor I tend to prefer working with women. I've typically not had difficulty having that request honored. All of the interns are supervised. They may or may not ask you if they can hold sessions in a room that has a one-way mirror (supervisors may observe from the other side). I've never been comfortable with this - that discomfort has always been honored. The counseling center used to actually be within the seminary, though it was moved into its current setting years ago. I've never been quite as comfortable in the current setting - it's not particularly as wheelchair friendly and the bathroom is abysmal. CTS sees clients without regard to race, color, religion/creed, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, national origin, disability, marital status, etc. This is consistent with Disciples of Christ. The counseling center has been around since 1967. It's fully accredited as are the CTS counseling programs. I find the CTS counseling center to be one of Indy's better affordable counseling options, though it's certainly not flawless. It's primarily geared toward shorter term counseling issues (once interns become licensed, they no longer work on sliding scale and/or will graduate and move away). While this typically takes 2-3 years, for those looking for a long-term relationship that's less likely here (This is generally true of affordable counseling - # of sessions is important and missed sessions can easily lead to termination of services). The counseling center offers a variety of groups. It does not offer walk-ins or crisis services. They also do not offer medications. Therapists are very good at identifying if someone's needs are outside their scope and will assist in arranging appropriate referrals if needed. Over the years, I've worked with 3 different therapists here. 2 of the 3 were wonderful experiences. The third was, perhaps, less stellar of an arrangement but I'd still consider it good. Overall, I'd consider the CTS Counseling Center one of Indy's better kept secrets for affordable counseling. While the scope is somewhat limited and there are some accessibility concerns (for in-person counseling), I've always felt cared about with my therapists and had good experiences working on issues important to my healing and wellness.
