This place is SO BEAUTIFUL! I highly recommend going! Here are a few tips to help your experience go smoothly: 1) if you drive there yourself, it is $5 to park and $1 per person. Pretty cheap! 2) wear water shoes or closed toed shoes. The rocks are slippery and there is mud in certain areas. 3) if you are going without a tour guide, you are able to explore at your leisure. There is no time limit. 4) be extra careful in the water. There are sudden dips and lots of rocks. Also spiders are present between some of them. A couple told us that they saw a snake but it went in another direction. So just use caution. 5) the water is very cold. But once in, it's okay. That's all! Definitely a must see!

There is a green house on the right hand side that you can park at for five dollars. There were many guided tours, but there is no need for one. My daughter and I took the three minute path down guided by the sound of the waterfall. We listened to the tour guides which say lean forward like you're touching your toes, engage your core, and keep your hands out against the rocks so that you don't hit your funny bone. This was the big slide. I watched for about an hour before I built up the courage to go. Stay crouched down low when you walk up the rocks that way if you slip you can catch yourself. Many people wore socks for a better grip. I am 45 and I did it barefoot. If you watch the guides the will take their group to hike about six minutes down a semi-steep hill. This leads to the little slide. There is also click jumping and a rope swing there. I passed. My daughter did both. I enjoyed the waterfall there. For five dollars a car its definitely a must see. Only about 10 minutes from Playa Azul in Luquillo where I'm staying.

Las Paylas water slides (or chorreras, in Spanish) are very popular! They are gorgeous! It's a fun place to picnic and spend some time watching the people slide, or just to play in the water pools. Remember to take all the trash with you. There are two slide areas here. The bigger, faster one, and the smaller, slower one. We did the smaller one. You will see that most of the locals are using the bigger one. It was great ! really smooth and not too fast. The pool at the bottom was deep (about 8-10 feet) and the rocks were a bit slippery for getting out. But I enjoyed the ride. *6 dollars for the parking or if you park outside it's only .50 cents just for enter. *bathrooms are clean *don't go with your flip flops, sneakers are a better choice. I love this river! One of my favorites!

$5 to park on someone property and walk down his manmade walkway. Bring water shoes, cash, and towels. It's not a park, just a water slide in the natural rock. I Do Not suggest people with neck or back issues do this. Just over the river behind the trees you can hike a little more. Lots of large rocks to climb around and up river. At the top of the boulders up river there's a nice rock formation in the wall of the mountain. We would return to bring other people but not a more than once kinda trip. Definitely cool though.

If you're looking for a semi-free family friendly adventure, Las Paylas in Luquillo, PR is where it's at! This hidden gem is just that, hidden. If you feel like you've pulled up to someone's private residence then you have arrived. With chalk drawn parking lines for parking spots and a local homeowner requesting $5.00 per car in Spanish, this local natural adventure park can not be missed!! Our family of 5 with children ages 7, 14 and 18-years of age there's fun for everyone. When you arrive you park at any open spot, walk to the homeowner and pay the parking/admission fee, as this is his property. You will follow the inclined, rocky path behind his home down to the first "water slide" on your left. Now this first slide is the fastest, longest, more extreme of the two slides and can not be skipped. My 7-year old son was able to navigate with little effort and loved every bit of it. To the right is a cavern of river rocks to climb and navigate in order to get to the second slide that is shorter and more mellow. This slide dumps you into a large pool of water safe enough to swim. Be warned there is a rushing current that will sweep away the youngest of adventures so please be mindful of weak swimmers. There is a "baby pool" off to the right of the main pool. You will also find a rope swing if you are daring enough. Although we watched locals climb and swing into the big pool, our family opted out of this experience. After getting up to the top and holding the rope, this seemed a little too daring for this momma bear and her cubs! All in all the whole family loved the natural experience and can not wait to head back on our next trip! Using Google Maps: PR-983, Luquillo, 00773, Puerto Rico

Awesome spot off the beaten path! A lot of locals were here on Sunday and it is within the El Yunque rain forest. There's this awesome waterslide that's natural!! You can slide down into a freshwater pool.

Omg such a cool spot! A local hidden gem! Not too touristic which makes it differently a must do! $5 dollar per car for parking. It's the parking lot is someone's house, making it a private lot and can be considered trespassing. You can choose to park else and walk but risk your car not being secure. This guy sits at his porch, watches the lot via surveillance cameras while selling small snacks and refreshments. The old guy is a hustler who chargers 25c to use his bathroom! Haha. But again, this is all managed by him and otherwise you have to find parking elsewhere and walk through a different path. Well worth the $5 per car. Las paylas is well worth the trip! You could spend as little as 1 hour and be perfectly content with your visit. It is a a natural rock slide that is safe for any age. There were kids as young as 5 and adults as old as 50 when I went. The rock slide falls naturally into a small pool. Along this pool are various rocks to sit and watch people slide down. Further down the stream there are multiple pockets of water where you can sit n enjoy the cool water as well. Well worth the trip! Highly recommend!

From that point on, it doesn't cost you anything unless you choose to spend money. It's a short walk from the parking lot to the beach. We had gotten there early, and decided to rent an umbrella and a pair of lounge chairs, which cost us $35 for the day. Considering we ended up spending nearly 7 hours on the beach, it was definitely worth the purchase price. The beach is gorgeous, and the water is rock free. It did get quite busy, but we actually enjoyed the people watching. There are vendors that walk up and down the beach, selling ice, creams and drinks, but there are also little Kioskos on the property that you can walk to easily to order hot food. At the one we visited, we got delicious slushy's, Pinchos, and empanadillas that were all delicious. We had a great time, and would absolutely go back in a heartbeat! When you leave the gated parking lot, you are literally around the corner from the Luquillo kioskos if you want to hit them up for shopping or dinner after your beach day. Makes things super convenient!

I recommend wearing water shoes as you'll have to walk through thigh deep water to get to the kayak. You want to plan your trip as close to a new moon as possible as you want to eliminate as much light as possible to really see the glow. Annoyingly there is a neighborhood above the lagoon with bright spotlights but facing the water way and lingering near the other side of the lagoon the bioluminescence is still very visible and a total blast. The guides even brought us a tiny jellyfish to observe and see how it glowed as it wiggled in our hands. I wouldn't even bother bringing your phone, I highly doubt you'd be able to capture the glow while holding still enough in a kayak. Navigating the mangroves was tricky because the guides blue lights were just bright enough the destroy our night vision and not see the low hanging branches. I would hope in the future that the guides would switch to red lights to make navigating in the low light easier.

Here was our experience. EXPERIENCE: Parking: As usually advised, come early. This is no hidden gem so this picks up fast. Other alternatives is carpooling or arrange a tour. Visitor access is managed largely because of parking limitations Vibes: The feelings from the temperature and energy changes. One night we were partying the streets of Santurce, next we we're in this chill and calm quiet area. There are paved scenic stops, short walking trails, and engaging areas such as waterfalls and river areas. You really can make it as adventurous as you want. OVERALL: 5 Stars. What's there to hate about this place? Maybe it can get super crowded but aside from that, it's a beautiful Puerto Rico experience. Whether you want waterfalls, hikes, scenic drives, or just to disconnect for a few hours, this place delivers. After that, you're not too far away from Luquillo Beach! Tips: * Go EARLY for parking and lighter crowds * Bring water shoes or shoes you don't mind getting muddy

Review #1,050 Posted on 5.1.26…read more We came to hike the Mt Britton trail at El Yunque on Friday the 24th of April. This was one of the better experiences of our trip, it was awesome up there. The parking is a bit tricky, honestly if I had to do it over again, I probably would've just parked a tad sooner then walked up more, but if you do that, it's a lot more time & walking/energy spent. The drive to those areas to park/hike is super scenic. You've got tons of green, and sounds of birds all around you, we rolled our windows down and soaked it all in. We parked pretty close to where the trail to hike Mt Britton begins, and it took us about 40 minutes to get to the castle, when you make it to the castle for sure go inside and walk the staircase to the top/roof. The views are awesome up there and you get some good photo opps. I would 100% make sure to do this again next time we visit.

Point 2- You Will get wet. Wear clothes you are ok to wet. Don't carry anything important on you which you mind getting wet. There may be mosquitoes time to time, be mentally prepared. You will be knee deep in water, wear appropriate shoes, but you can leave the shoes in the car and go barefoot. Point 3- The darker the night, the better the luminescence. Note: In a certain area, the water illuminates when you dip your hand or anything else in it. Swimming is prohibited there but hands, legs, peddles are all ok. Thats what it is. And to think its all because of a certain plankton, a natural phenomenon, is what makes it all that special. A starlit sky above, a huge expanse of water in the dark where u can only hear one another, your kayaking partner beside you, your team with you, all kayaking, laughing, listening to the night sounds, or catching sight of a sleepy iguana- all these make it a fun experience. And gosh the guides ! They are so helpful and absolutely hilarious, all the while being motivated... if I completed anything and made it through, it was only because of them. Yes, it all exciting, adventurous and fun, but if in your head you have built up a magically lit pond (which, i had), then NO its not that at all. I want to stress on this again - the guides were absolutely wonderful people. They make sure everyone enjoy and keep the whole experience interactive while making sure all the precautions are followed. And if I can put a check mark its only because of they not giving up on us, and they waited, helped and made us not miss the experience however late we were. WITHOUT A PADDLE…read more Kayaking during the day proving too easy?  How about kayaking at night...through a mangrove forest. As my wife and I planned our second trip to Puerto Rico, we agreed that a bio bay kayak tour should be on the list.  Only 5 biobays exist in the world, 3 of which are in PR (in Vieques, La Parguera, and here on the far northeast corner of the island).  There's a few kayaking tour companies in the area, each offering a similar bioluminescent excursion. Hang on, biolu-what?  I'll skip the TED talk--all you need to know is that a certain kind of marine plankton makes the water in extra salty lagoons glow blue.  It's the same science that gives jellyfish, fireflies, and deep-sea anglerfish their special ability to produce light. When we arrived around 8pm, tour guides gave our group of 15-20 life vests and provided instructions, like what to do if your ass falls out of the kayak.  Our goal was Laguna Grande (literally "big lagoon"), roughly 1 mile from our starting point on the shores of Fajardo. So......getting to Laguna Grande is not easy.  Along with a partner, you'll paddle your way through a narrow channel surrounded on all sides by thick mangroves, including an overhead canopy.  This is tricky during daylight hours, but at night the difficulty ramps up.  Keep in mind that visibility in these thick mangrove patches drops to near-zero at times. You might (probably will) have to avoid other kayak groups and (possibly) motorboats as you make your way to the lagoon, all while trying not to crash into the person in front of you, fall too far behind, or be knocked unconscious/impaled by low branches.  The outbound trip was not super chill, thankfully coming back was less stressful. Having an experienced partner is CRUCIAL. Bio bay tours are very much like whale watching, in that your visit is based almost entirely on luck.  A lot needs to go right in order to see magic stuff in the water, like the moon being in its 'new' phase (full moon casts too bright of a reflection) and no recent rainfall (rain comes down as fresh water, decreasing the lagoon's salinity). Under ideal circumstances, the microorganisms appear as florescent blue swirls when you move your hand/paddle through the water.  What we saw were closer to electrical 'sparks', still cool but not vibrant.  Capturing what little bio-presence we saw on camera would've been impossible, so we smartly kept our phones in the car. Oddly enough, mosquitos weren't a problem. * TL;DR * For me, this was more about the journey than the destination. If I'd hung all of my hopes on seeing tons of bioluminescent activity, I would've been disappointed.  I was focused more on trying not to capsize while also listening to the symphony of 'coqui' (the local island tree frog). It can be romantic with a spouse/partner, assuming they're not yelling at you the whole time. Wear comfy clothes (swim trunks aren't a bad idea) and be aware that parts of your outfit will be crunchy the next day, due to the lagoon water being twice as salty as the ocean. Mangroves play a critical role in the tropical ecosystem, but they stink! Would definitely recommend this to anyone over the age of 18; it's an awesome late-night adventure and one of the most unique things you can do while in Puerto Rico.
