Each of our three shared plates were superb -- a bean stew, black rice with cuttlefish, and meatballs -- and if we were staying another night we would happily return to order many other appealing items on the menu. Our server was warmly formal, very attentive, very gracious. When we think of Ávila, we will remember Alcaravea.

This is how we happened upon Reyes Catolicos when our stomachs were rumbling. The menu del dia was very reasonable and had all of the Avila dishes that we wanted to try. Our favorite part of the meal was the first course: Husband had the traditional Judias del Barco de Avila (because when in Avila you need to try the beans) and fell in love. In fact, I think we all would have been fine just eating the beans for the whole meal, even though the other soups--gazpacho and vichyssoise--were also delightful. The beans were just that good. The second course wasn't as memorable; we all had the chuleta, which was good, but not the standout of the meal. For an early lunch out on a nice patio in a central spot, Reyes Catolicos is a decent choice.

I asked for the dessert of the day, which was a white chocolate cake with a milk chocolate drizzle. Also very good. The waiter was patient with me when he figured out I didn't speak Spanish very well. He said he didn't speak English (totes understandable), but when he brought out my change, he said, "Thank you" and answered my "hasta luego" with a "good-bye" which I thought was so sweet of him. I recommend getting here at the beginning of lunch when the tables are still empty because this place fills up fast. Seating is either inside or on the sidewalk.
