Inside the newly renovated Lark Theater in Larkspur.

Wonderful old art deco movie theater, the Lark Theater just underwent a renovation. So few of these old theaters have survived, and the Lark is a non-profit run by volunteers and supported by the community. The revamp includes updated powder rooms, an upgrade to the main theater including new cushions in the main viewing area (which were sorely needed,) and installing a small lounge next to each powder room. The lounge by the ladies room has red velvet chairs and is what they are calling their "wine lounge." You can purchase a glass in the PM at the concession counter, and have it poured in this room. The snack and beverage selection is good quality for a movie theater, as you might imagine in any theater with its own wine lounge. The Lark shows arthouse films, vintage classics, some award nominees (leading up to award season) and the periodic first release. They post their schedule online.

Wonderful place to see a foreign film.

This is the best theater in Marin. They share a variety of movies each day and often play first run movies. I love the artist features such as Van Gough, Hopper, Van Gough to name a few. The outdoor drive in at the Corte Madera mall is inspired. It took me years to try it but I'm glad I did. It's fun to be the the community of kids of all ages to see Disney classics. I especially like the interior of the theater. The red velvet seats and hand painted wall decor takes me back to a by-gone era.

Root beer float and a movie?? Yes, please.

This is a good old movie theater - the kind from my childhood, and I love it! They before noon deal is a no brainer; five bucks and free popcorn, heck yes!!! They have root beer floats!!! Delicious root beer floats! Their staff is friendly, clean looking and smelling ... a huge bonus for me when the employee's don't smell like weed; so the fifth star is for that. For me, there's nothing worse than the lingering smell of pot on the hands and clothing of someone handling my food, or making my root beer float. Kudos for keeping it simple!

They don't make them like this anymore! More than a century old, and richly deserving of a visit.

The best small venue in Marin. Comfortable seats. Great concessions (also wine and beer). Newly remodeled. And mostly great films.

Who knew this indie animated feature would be so popular (good on them!). So we got there when there was only 1 ticket left--and we weren't the only ones who tried to get tickets! So we made the trek over the Richmond Bridge, this time securing our tickets online first before arriving. Prices are as follows but there are service fees online: $14.00 General $10.50 Seniors & Youth $8.50 CAFILM members This theater is wonderfully located in downtown San Rafael and street parking was easy enough to find and free since it's Sunday. It's my first time and I really like it. I noticed they screen a lot of indie-like films, and would often have Q&A panels after. There's lots of food options in the area (or bars).

Well, actually, this is more than one. The Rafael "Film Center" houses 3 theatres, each of a different size. They seem to specialize in screening independent films that are never less than interesting and often downright compelling. Pro tip here: Join CA Film (which owns these theatres and Mill Valley's Sequoia Theatres) for discounts here and access to many free screenings, often including talks with the directors after the show. The Film Center is a great asset to this community and one I'm proud to have in my neighborhood.

It's exciting and convenient that we have an opportunity to participate in a small, navigable, regional film festival that includes thoughtful and innovative films, surprise appearances by directors, and hopefully (after the actors strike concludes) talented actors, all in own backyard. The film festival is organized by The California Film Institute, an arts nonprofit in San Rafael. MVFF provides a forum for introducing new films to West coast audiences well before theatrical release dates. This year I planned to see "Saltburn" by the brilliant Emerald Fennel, who previously won an Academy Award and BAFTA for "Promising Young Woman." What I wasn't expecting was an intimate Q&A (she spoke the day before, but opted to stay for the second showing) talking candidly about the motivation for her transgressive, lush and surprising film. Cord Jefferson's satire, "American Fiction" featured a supremely talented cast, including Jeffrey Wright and Issa Ray, and it's searing insights brought laughter, "aha's" and self-examination to a privileged Marin film audience. Many films show at the Christopher Smith Rafael Theatre (and also at other local sites), the festival is well run, organized and is attended by directors, journalists, critics and local cinephiles. Tickets are sold online (normal tickets prices, $16, or more if there will be a special guest Q&A) and the bigger films go to "Rush" quickly, meaning all advance tickets are sold out, but a handful of remaining tickets will be sold at the door. Don't miss it!
