This kitschy little motel is my favorite of all the places I've stayed on an extended road trip. I got a recently remodeled room, and every detail is just. so. cute. I'm attaching a ton of photos I took to show my family how much I loved my room. Yummy squishy pillows, extremely hot water available in the bathroom (if that's your thing), the most thoroughly stocked "kitchen" area I've ever had, and Amy at the front desk is delightful. Doors DO open directly to outside, but that's not something that bothers me. In general, highly recommend. If you (like me) are sick of soulless hotel chains, give this place a try. read more

A charming little motel in a pass thru town. Hardin is probably not somewhere you would stay unless you have family or business in the area. We decided not to make the 7 hour drive directly from South Dakota so we chose Hardin because it was basically a midway point on our drive. Since there are five of us we booked two rooms, directly on the hotels site (pay in person). Staying in Hardin gave us a chance to explore Montana a bit before heading to Yellowstone. The owner gave us awesome recommendations for good food in the area but since we decided to check in and explore everything was closed by the time we got back. Our rooms were newly renovated and had every amenity we needed. They also booked us in two side by side rooms which was perfect. Although we didn't take advantage of the freshly brewed coffee in the morning it was a nice option to have. After driving around Hardin a bit we were extremely happy with our choice of motels. The pictures, unlike other places in the area, are 100% accurate. This is a charming, vintage, roadside motel that has been impeccably maintained. If you're on the fence on where to stay in the area don't hesitate to choose the Lariat. read more

Front office staff is super friendly and accommodating, the room was so clean, and I slept so well. In the morning, I was greeted and asked about my stay. The Little Big Horn Battlefield Memorial had been a bucket list visit for years and I finally made the pilgrimage. Searched online for a top place to stay. I hit the jackpot with the Lariat Motel. Nice size and very clean room, exceptionally comfortable bed, awesome TV with satellite, great bathroom with a great shower. And hassle free parking. Best Owner/Operator motel in my years of traveling to historic sights. Highest recommendation. read more

We stayed here for a night to check out Little Bighorn during a road trip. What a great experience! An old fashioned, family owned motel experience. By old fashioned, I mean the hospitality and service, not to be mistaken by the rooms which are renovated, clean and anything but old! You get the experience of a road trip mom and pop motel in a small town, with modern and extremely comfortable amenities at the same time. The woman who checked us in was extremely friendly and kind. Very personable and caring folks! Told us her husband renovates the rooms himself- so impressive as they look like they're done by a team of pros. They're small rooms, no frills, but you get a completely fair deal for what you pay for. The beds are so comfy, nice wooden floors, beautiful wood work, nice bathroom. It's certainly not a huge room but it could comfortably rest a family of 1-4 for a few nights! They even have a Keurig in the room, coffee, waters, etc. Overall, it's a cozy family motel that will be more than enough for most driving on through Montana to stay for a night or two! If I'm near the area again, I'll definitely be staying here. Support small businesses like this one- it's an American western gem! read more

The updated rooms are cute and this motel has the best towels ever! The mattresses could use an update next. There was a hump in the middle that was uncomfortable. If you're lucky Amy may make scones in the morning- it's not an everyday thing. But if there are pecan and sugar scones be sure and grab one. They were wonderful. The owner had great suggestions for places to eat. The 3 Brothers Bistro is excellent. This is a clean and safe motel that promises to be better as more improvements are made. read more

Extremely charming newly renovated hotel. My family and I really enjoyed our time at this motel. The owners have truly gone above and beyond with quality items. Great value for the money. Clean, quiet and safe. A winner in a town with not so many good choices.

Beware! The guy who runs this motel is a serious psychotic. I booked the room through hotels.com and paid through the app. When I got there, he tried to charge me again and I told him that I had already paid through hotels.com. He said, "no you didn't, we don't participate with hotels.com". I said, "let me go out and get my phone out of the car, so I can show you the confirmation email". When I came back in and tried to show him The confirmation, he said, "I don't want you here. I want you to get out now!" and he threw me out of the hotel! I was actually in fear that he was going to get physical. It all came out of nowhere. This man is seriously troubled. read more

It's an old motel, that's been fixed up. But it's like putting lipstick on a pig. Way overpriced for what you get. The owner was a bit off. We looked at a room but moved on down the road for a newer motel that was cheaper and included breakfast. Glad we moved on. read more

During a July road trip which took us from Washington state to Michigan and back, we stopped to visit Little Bighorn. We chose to stay at the Lariat and were wonderfully impressed! From the pleasant-smelling rooms to the comfy beds to the well-designed bathrooms, we truly enjoyed our stay. We were able to walk down the street to the El Molcajete restaurant for dinner and then enjoyed a stroll through Hardin after dinner. The hotel was quiet, clean, and the staff were incredibly helpful and pleasant. If you need a place to stay near the Little Bighorn, choose the Lariat Motel and you may thank me later. read more

The beds were comfy but the room was much smaller than we anticipated. We had issues with the TV, wifi and a couple of other items. The owners were very friendly and worked to correct any concerns promptly. They were super nice, but it was a hassle. read more

Great place to stay. We visited Bighorn Battlefield, stayed at the Lariat, a great value. Simple, cinder block construction, yeah, it's a little worn, but it's clean and neat. The bathroom is all tile, including the floor, looked recently done, and sparkling clean. Towels and washcloths are thick and soft, and the facial tissue is soft, like Puffs. I appreciated those two nice touches that increase the personal comfort level. Waylon, the manager, is sincere, cheerful, and seems to take a lot of pride in his operation. This is Montana. The Lariat will seem rustic to urbanites, but it's a great value, offers the traveler a very nice place to stay, and Waylon makes you feel like you just talked to a person, not a hotel clerk who recited the script for the fiftieth time. read more

Believe it or not, I first stayed at the Lariat in June and July, 1961, after my father was transferred from Alabama to Montana. I also stayed there fairly often during my high school days from 1962-1966. I stayed there again for the first time since then in September 2016 for our 50th high school graduation reunion. The motel was under brand-new ownership, and I think they were still trying to get things back in order. The place, however, would still be my first choice in Hardin, over any chain motel out by the freeway. The room I had was barely changed in terms of furnishings in 55 years, but those furnishings included, among other things, two very nice leather lounge chairs, both with a carve-out of a cowboy with his rope. Those must be collector's items; it's a testimony to most people's honesty that the chairs have not been stolen by any guests. Changes for the better in the room I had included a larger bed, DirecTV, and new air conditioning. I know that the new owners are planning other improvements. The location of the Lariat is one of the best things about it. Downtown Hardin certainly has seen better days, but it is an official national historic district, well worth a walk through it. One can be downtown walking from the Lariat in five minutes. It's also a straight shot from there to the very surprisingly nice Big Horn County Historical Museum, and then down in 15 minutes to Custer Battlefield. A good breakfast café is only 50 feet or so north of the motel. With my long history with it, I think I can analyze it better than most people can. It's quite good. read more

This motel is worth the drive into town and off of I-90! The rooms are CLEAN and well taken care of! They are decorated in a charming "Western Motif" and we even had a lariat on our wall! The bed was cozy and we had plenty of everything - bedding, heat, etc. The price was great - and we would definitely come back for another visit! The owners are friendly and helpful, and there is even a popcorn machine for evening movies. :) Right next door is the Lariat Country Kitchen - where the food is great! We also walked down the main street - interesting architecture and friendly folks. Couldn't have found a better place to spend the night - will definitely come back when traveling through SE MT! read more

Ended up here since one of the park rangers recommended the lariat restaurant. We got a double bed for under $70 with a military discount and the room was cozy and western-esque but the downside was there were a couple bugs on the floor/bed, stains on the comforter, dirty shower and and an overall neglect of the room. Not anything serious or nasty but not exactly a comfy motel. We definitely wouldn't come back here. Along the main street, everything closes at 6:00 except the restaurant and grocery stores. I think there was a dive bar further down the street. And a casino. They have been the first smoke-friendly hotel thus far. read more

This was a clean motel at on ok price but it needs some updating. The carpet was quite old and was in need of replacement. The air conditioning worked ok but was loud with a rattle. Had good water pressure and water got very hot (too hot at times). The staff person was nice enough and we were tired from a lot of driving. Only had a full size bed with a twin squeezed In the small room but it worked for a nights sleep and clean shower. Had a room upstairs at the far end with no other staircase for access. read more

Cozy and clean with a friendly owner and staff. Located in town you are close to some very good places to eat. I would recommend the chicken at Four Aces or the pizza at Little Big Mans. Stranded for a few days because of weather, this was a far better choice than the chain motels and fast food restaurants directly off the interstate. read more

The staff could not have been moving welcoming and efficient. We really felt at home. Rooms are nicely appointed and very clean. Location is close to an excellent restaurant--The Three Brothers. The scones in the morning were extraordinary--told my wife she would have to get her own. We travel around the world and this was one of our better experiences. We will be back. read more

My husband (active duty army) and 14 month old son had been driving for 8 hours and needed a place to stay. It was the most prominent looking place before Billings, so we stopped in Hardin. We are on a budget and didn't want to stop at a motel/hotel chain. Let me just say, this place is very military friendly. My husband and I were thrilled with the room, it had a unique bathroom as well. We would definitely stay here again if we happened to need to stay here again. read more

Here's a different spin. We chose Lariat because of close proximity to Custer/Little Bighorn and because we wanted to give our grandkids a different experience with a 50s style motel rather than the usual cookie cutter chain. Good decision. Simple, clean rooms with all necessities, but nothing special, perfect, right? Exactly, until I walked barefoot to the bathroom and was disgusted by the squish of the wet, mildewy carpet--really saturated! A brief, pleasant conversation with the proprietor resulted in a quick room change, many apologies, and all is well. Rarely have I encountered such quick, friendly service and a willingness to please the customer. The Lariat has the right idea. Situated in a small town in the middle nowhere, good customer service reigns supreme! read more

The Lariat Motel was very clean and friendly. The woman at the front desk was charming and friendly. I instantly felt welcomed. It is a simple motel, but they really take care of everything.
