The festival grounds are beautiful and so unique from other Renaissance Festivals! It is exceptionally well run, especially for a seasonal operation. Parking, traffic, maintenance, entertainment are impressive. Walking through the festival felt like being at Costco on its busiest Saturday of all times. I actually enjoy being somewhere that's so popular. A packed event creates a fun energy. However- the festival has become a victim of its own popularity. Even at 3pm, food lines are 100+ deep, and last hours. The problem isn't admission capacity but the ability to feed guests. Demand has simply outgrown the infrastructure for food service. I left after a couple hours without buying food or drinks, simply because I wasn't able to. This represents lost revenue for vendors as well as a worse guest experience. I'm not sure what the solution is. But I'd really hope the owners can figure something out. The festival keeps admission and food reasonably priced, and it's clear that a tremendous amount of work goes into creating such a wonderful event. Unfortunately, at this point, the festival has become a victim of its own success. Hurts me to type this, but I think they need to think about limiting attendance or increasing ticket and food prices enough to reduce crowding and make the experience more enjoyable for everyone. The customers deserve to be fed, and the vendors deserve to make money!

Saturday tends to get a lot more crowded, and the tend to run out of beer in the afternoon. However, the lines are never THAT bad, and while you wait in line, you talk and drink beer. It's like Disney World without the rides and you enjoy the wait Also, there are always coupons and deals that go around the week before. Although we've lived here for decades, we had never attended the coffin races so we thought we'd go…read morethis year (October, 2016). The races started at noon and we arrived at 10:30. Even so, the parking was horrendous. We finally "made" our own parking spot off the main road half in some bushes. We walked around until 11:20 and then reserved some curb space to watch the parade and races. It was in the 80s and hot in the sun. Finally it was noon, and, and nothing. Ten after noon, nothing, Twenty after noon, nothing. Finally at 12:30pm, we had had enough and left to find a place to have lunch. Afterwards we went back to the car to find a $35 parking ticket (nice gimmick, don't provide sufficient parking and then clean up financially). Some of the costumes were neat, but until Manitou can get their parking situation under control, don't bother, it wasn't that great. I won't go to any more events there.

I have to admit - being a Texas resident these days I was a little skeptical when my sister…read morementioned wanting to visit the Flying W Ranch for a chuckwagon dinner. And I gotta say, this ended up being one of my favorite experiences during this recent Colorado trip. There's truly something for everyone to enjoy and the experience begins well before your bbq buffet dinner does! We arrived about an hour before the dinner/show time and spent time wandering the ranch and exploring what all there was to see. There is a petting zoo, a little train ride through a "mine", hiking trails, ax throwing, Native American demonstrations, and so, so much more. Now as for the dinner, you'll be sat family style and then section by section you'll go up and make your way through the buffet line. I was surprised by how tasty everything was (the brisket wasn't Texas worthy but the bbq chicken was super yummy). As soon as everyone had gone through the line, it was open for anyone to go back through the buffet line for seconds (or thirds). But wait there's more! While you dine, you'll also enjoy a live musical show with a band singing old Western and spiritual songs. And as if the visit couldn't have been any better, towards the end of the show a herd of wild bighorn canyon sheep made their way down from the surrounding hills and wandered through the rach outside the dining hall. All in all I'll definitely be back to Flying W Ranch if ever get the chance and so should you if you ever find your way in Colorado Springs!

Make sure to get there early so you can enjoy the multitude of things around the ranch. There are many farm animals that you can look at and learn about. There is archery and axe throwing. There is a train ride and a wagon ride. There is even a Native American show where you can learn about their traditional dance and culture. Later in the night, you get herded into their dinner building. You are assigned a table number from when you check in. They release tables one by one to go get food. And there is a ton of food to grab. You just carry your metal plate and people place food directly onto your plate as you walk down the line. There is more than enough food, I definitely could not finish it all. You get brisket, chicken, baked beans, baked potato, applesauce, biscuit, and spice cake. Could have used a vegetable to round out the meal but thats ok, I'm not complaining. After everyone gets food, you can grab seconds if you want. There are also plenty of drinks like water, lemonade, and iced tea. And finally, the show begins. The Flying W are a talented group of musicians that can sing and play instruments. They sang classic cowboy Western songs but also some Christian songs. It was extraordinary and made for a great way to round out the night. You certainly get your moneys worth between the food, show, and experiences. Highly recommend, I don't think you will be disappointed!

I love exploring the individual artists tents/ booths which showcase everything from modern art to folk art and hand knit hats. I bought some great jewelry pieces. It is wonderful to have that one of a kind piece handmade by artisans. I also purchased some gorgeous hand blown glass pieces at an excellent value. This year I spent a good deal of time just wandering around enjoying the live music, the birds of prey exhibit, the delicious food and snow cones! Wine & beer were also available for those who wanted to enjoy them. I try to go every year as it now signals me that summer is coming to an end and the leaves are turning beneath the Rock. Just go and enjoy a perfect end-of-summer event in Castle Rock.
