If I could turn back the clock and go to college again I would love to go to school here…read more My friend's niece is currently studying Marine Biology at Glasgow Uni, so we strolled around the East Quad of the campus on the evening of August 5th, 2013 after our dinner at the Hillhead BookClub. I'd have to say I was in shock when we walked inside the East Quad. The students were still on their summer break, the beautiful green lawn looked like it had just been mowed and the beautiful buildings caused my jaw to drop open. It's a good thing there were no bugs flying around or I would have choked on a few. We concentrated on the East Quad because the campus is huge. While I was taking photos I saw a fox! I chased it down the stairs, but it disappeared in a crack or crevice of one of the buildings. That was pretty cool. I'd have to say this is the most beautiful campus I've ever seen in my life. Stow College is a great old Glasgow college, that is renowned for its excellent facilities and…read morereputation for providing excellent education. Stow was the first in Scotland to offer Sound Engineering as a course of study and is the college of choice for many budding young musicians and sound engineers in Glasgow. In addition to its great facilities, top of the range equipment and state of the art technology, the toilets are pretty clean too - which is always nice eh? The canteen offers plenty of good grub throughout the day, including a full breakfast for only £2. The only negative thing I can think of is about the grumpy old man that works in the convenience shop, but I doubt it would be the same without him.

Located round the back of the art school, it won't attract tourists, and the large, functional building expresses much of the place's practical intentions, but little of the creativity within. It is a splendid spot for further and adult education, with lots of vocational courses and media-associated subjects. Many of the courses have a strong practical component, and feel more like project work than traditional, lecture based education: a real positive, modern attitude in their practice.

Being a private school the uniform policy is pretty strict, but with rumors of the boys trousers soon changing to the purple tartan pattern this may soon change from a cause of nuisance, to one of sheer hilarity on epic proportions. Honestly, tartan trousers? Genius. With the recently added brand spanking new primary school building now perched precariously over the Kelvin and protruding it's sparkling glass faced walls onto Belmont Street, this contrasts interestingly with it's rather older and more traditional buildings to the rear and make the school fees well worth the money, even if your child has to endure various missiles and projectiles launched from neighbouring schools at his rather dubious tartan trousers.

Apart from being socially controversial, private schools have had a rather difficult time in the…read morepast ten years. The abolition of assisted places undermined the class mixture that rescued many of them from being too exclusive and the ability to pay became more critical than academic talent, at least as far as admission procedures went. Despite this, the Academy still has a reputation for strong intellectual achievement, and the pupils, seen in the West End most days in their uniforms, are smart and well mannered. It is a school for those with bright academic hopes, and the new buildings, mirrored in the development of rival schools, do not hide a school for the rich and dim. Tough selection procedures ensure that they continue to provide a generation of lawyers and doctors, although it is always worth noting that this sort of education is not really ideal for everyone.

Staff are friendly and helpful whether you are in the library or in class and there is a great deal of time and energy put in to support students on any of the courses. A cafe is available on the first floor which opens around 4.30pm and offers good value for money serving coffee, tea and various snacks. Parking can be an issue with not a huge amount available, but there are four disabled parking spaces close to the door at the back, and several located close to the front.

It's main courses are nursing but they also have courses on Social, Legal, Sports etc. This college is slap bang in the middle of Hamilton and has a good academic reputation. It also has a huge library but to be honest it doesn't always supply everything that everyone needs but it has the basic books and functions. The gym is rather dated and the social supplies cheap drink but is in need for renovation. A good college which gives a great higher education.

I did a self-tour of the campus to take in the gothic revival architecture. I visited the university library as well. The school was in the second Trainspotting movie and I love Ewan so win-win. This campus is what you would hope to see at a longstanding venerable European institution such as…read morethe University of Glasgow. Founded in 1451, it is the 4th oldest in the English-speaking sphere. The architectural splendor reflects the historical standing of this wonderful institution. With around 38,000 students (undergrad and grad, 24K and 14K, respectively), it is a sizeable campus. Located in the Hillhead neighborhood of Glasgow near the Hillhead Metro stop, it is outside city centre a bit and dominates the landscape of the area. Moreover, while many European universities are spread out in their respective cities with clusters of mini-campuses and individual buildings, this campus is more concentrated similar to US universities. Having said that, there are parts of the University, such as the Veterinary School and Dental School, that are located elsewhere in the city. But most of the activity seems to be on this central campus. The University was actually originally located on High St. in City Centre. It moved to this location in the latter half of the 19th Century. Strolling through, it is easy to sense the historical significance of this place. Even though the buildings only date back to the late 19th century, the feeling seems like it is more longstanding than that. Perhaps it is because the campus was built with four centuries of institutional history and legacy engrained. It was, for example, part of the eighteenth-century Scottish enlightenment. It's alumni include three British PMs, three Scottish First Ministers and other notables such as Adam Smith, James Watt, Lord Kelvin and Francis Hutcheson. While our visit to the campus was partly to appreciate the historical aura, we were also not disappointed by the illustrious architecture. Built in the Gothic Revival style, the oldest buildings on campus are impressive, including structures such as the Main Building and the Clock Tower that inspire admiration. It is also interesting that the University purchased several Victorian Houses adjacent to campus in the 1930s which now house the Psychology Depetment and other University functions. We noticed with curiosity these structures as we made our way to the perimeter of the campus. It is interesting that one of the reasons that the University relocated in 1870 from its original High St. location, where it was housed for over 400 years, was the de-gentrification of the neighborhood surrounding it. The latter was transforming to a lower class enclave. Perhaps this was part of the reason for purchasing surrounding homes near the new campus, in addition to the legitimate need for more land. The campus today sports an eclectic mix of structures to complement the original buildings. The splendid Wolfson Medical School building with its glass front perhaps stands out the most among the newer structures. The library building is also imposing, but much less impressive architecturally (I'm not a fan of late-20th Century architecture, at least post-WWII through the 80s). If you are in Glasgow, it's worth heading to Hillhead to stroll through this campus. You can take in the area while you're there. Nearby attractions such as the restaurants and ambiance on Ashton Lane and the back alley market on Ruthven Lane add to the enjoyment of a visit to this area.

Whitburn Academy is a six-year comprehensive, non-denominational school. The school building opened…read moreoriginally in 1967 and was extensively refurbished and upgraded in 2001/2. It now provides excellent modern educational facilities for pupils from Whitburn and surrounding villages. There are 4 language laboratories ,6 Computing/Business Education Classrooms and 2 IT suites. There are now 10 Science labs,5 Craft & Design labs, 4 Home Economics Rooms, 4 Music Classrooms and 4 Music Tuition Rooms. There is also 1 Gymnasia,1 Games Hall,1 Conditioning Room plus 1 Dance Studio. Also an all weather pitch and changing pavilion plus a Swimming pool. My three children attended this school and all achieved good qualifications. Some of the staff have been there for a long time and this is good when you go to parent nights as they know you and you feel more comfortable discussing your childs education. The Academy is an important part of the community, used for Pantomimes and other shows, the starting point for the yearly gala day and of course it's most recent claim to fame was when local boy, Leon returned after winning X factor!

There is no doubt the results are impressive; I would have loved a dance and recording studio when I was at school. However, I wonder if the state of the art facilities may result in a few pampered pupils. I mean are hair straighteners in the girls' changing rooms really necessary? I guess only time will tell as to whether or not the PPP iniative was a good idea or not.

St Peter the Apostle, formerly St Columba's and St Andrew's High Schools, is the brand new Public…read morePrivate Partnership high school serving the catholic students in Clydebank. It is absolutely massive and has tons of great facilities such as a gym and recording studio. PPP schools are cropping up in almost all local authorities in the Glasgow area. It will be interesting to see if the fixtures and fittings are still standing in 50 years time.

While it may seem a tad strange to review a school, and even stranger when you consider I did not…read moreattend this school myself, this review is based solely on the hiring of the gym hall. Unlike the 40 or 50 quid you have to shell out for 5-a-side football facilities across the city, Knightswood Secondary gym hall is available for hire for a paltry ten pounds. The set-up is basic - an indoor hall, a couple of goals, small changing room and truly awful showers. However, the value for money is terrific, while the heat generated in the hall will ensure you sweat out all of the gunk that remains in your system from a rough weekend. Availability is an issue given it is used by many of the school's clubs, but it's defintiely worth enquiring about.
