On our way to Hadrian's Wall, we passed a beautiful old church-thingy. We kept going but decided later to turn back and check it out. It turned out to be the Lanercost Priory, founded in1169, partially ruined but also still a functioning as The Priory Church of St. Mary Magdalene. Along side the priory is a farm shop and cafe and hotel. The farm store was cute and typical, and we decided to have a late lunch in the cafe.
The decor is quite modern and very clean, the menu diverse and appealing. They also run specials and had a board with those clearly laid out. You order at the counter, pay, and then they bring you your food when it's ready. The woman at the counter was incredibly friendly and accommodating even though they were closing in half an hour. (Open from 10A-5P daily) I had the vegetable lasagna, something I almost never do, because it's usually weak and pale and sad, ha. But this was strange and delicious- pasta, roasted vegetables and a delicious cheddar sauce, with tons of really delicious melted cheese on top. Indulgent, definitely, and huge. Mom had a goat cheese panini with generous toppings. Both meals were served with a side salad with actual vegetables! Like- five actual vegetables! Crazy! I also had a latte, which was served fancy-style in a tall glass mug and with a long spoon "so I wouldn't burn my hand". =)
It was a really delicious meal, in a beautiful setting, Highly recommended if you're on your way to Hadrian's Wall for the day! read more
