He has severe PTSD, is in drug withdrawal psychosis, he has told the staff at ER that he doesn't want to live anymore, he's so exhausted from living on streets.. Apparently, the only thing they will give is tranquilizers/chem restraints that cause brain damage. They don't try to get them to a place to sleep, or therapy, or rehab. His feet are blistered from walking in just socks, and head very razor burned and partially shaved. He's the kindest most tender hearted person, But they don't see that, they only see how psychosis is impacting him and it's like they're holding it against him. I waited for two hours in the waiting room and they discharged him without telling me, and without telling him that I was there, knowing that I'm trying to establish contact with him to try to help him get into a therapeutic rehab. (he has no phone). I've heard the Penn medicine ER is much kinder to those in withdrawal or psychosis. Update 8/25: A loved one went there bc of withdrawal from marijuana and having mental health instability; this hospital won't help them, they just send them out on the streets. The nurses in triage for substance use/mental health are not trauma informed, were very rude, condescending, and triangulating/undermining to erode trust between the patient and their family and vice versa. Pointless to try to get help for a loved one in need of rehab here. 2/25- Make sure you do not bring any belongings because you won't get them back. I brought in 5 bags of clothes and toiletries for my son who was being transferred and they went missing. Even though the security sergeant confirmed watching the video footage and seeing me bring them to him and hand them over the desk to the nurses, who confirmed they would inventory his things, there is no paper trail of these belongings. Now he does not have these 5 bags of clothes and toiletries because the nurses failed to inventory them. The hospital is not making any sort of amends, no one, not even the patient advocate, has called back to address this. It was his nicest clothes and three bags of brand new toiletries, socks, etc. All I have is the security sergeants confirmation of video footages showing that I brought the items in, but without a paper trail, there is no way to prove I brought them in and therefore no one is being held accountable for the theft of my sons belongings. Very sad that this is just going to be dismissed even though there's proof because the sergeant confirmed watching the video footage. I would also complain about how rude, belittling, and un-trauma informed the nurses were but, I already know advocating falls on deaf ears because of advocating for a patient in the past and nothing changing.

While I liked the way I was in/out, the friendly staff, the free parking, etc...all of that went out the door when they screwed up and sent (unnecessary) labs to the wrong lab. Didn't think a culture of the fluid they removed from an ingrown hair would need to be tested. The problem was quite obvious and relief occurred as soon as they drained it. But they insisted. Why and for what purpose? The lab came back a few days later and the treatment didn't change regardless of their findings. Because they want to pad your bill that's why. Let's just ignore the fact that my insurance requires lab to be done at Quest. Let's send it to LGH and have our patient pay for it completely out of pocket. That's the thought process of LGH....no matter what practice I go to within their network they ALWAYS manage to screw up billing. Lancaster Behavioral Health Hospital was the last hospital I was in, last October (2024). I am writing this review now (August 2025). Out of all of the hospitals where I was a patient, this one was the best. It would be more accurate to say it was the least horrible of them all. Mental hospitals are not places of healing or recovery. However, this was the first out of five long years of hospitals, where the staff actually treated me like a human being. It was also the first one where I was not forced into seclusion or put in restraints (again this is 2024 so these other hospitals that DID do this are not some distant thing in the past, they likely still do). They had a room with a comfortable chair that ONLY BY REQUEST so only if I WANTED to, I could go and ask them to put on music, they would let me pick music from the Spotify playlist. Mental hospitals are never a good thing in my experience, they are not a place where one can feel safe enough to heal and work through trauma. However, if someone has a child who is in immediate danger of harming themselves or others and you have tried everything else, this hospital is definitely better than any others I have been in. I would not recommend this hospital because it is a mental hospital, but I would say if it can't be avoided and you or a loved one NEEDS a hospital for super temporary like a week at most,I would recommend this STRONGLY above any others. The lesser of all of the evils. Better to go here if unavoidable then risk being sent to another hospital where the chances of being abused, neglected, emotionally manipulated, or other are very high. Over all it's not good, but it's not as bad as the others I had to go to. The food was edible, WAY better than any other hospital food but still hospital food. They let us have regular outside time, which is amazing because a lot of hospitals either don't let their patients outside because of being "understaffed" or not very often. They had snacks once a day in addition to the three meals which I liked, helped break up the day.

PLEASE READ: OVERALL…read moreEXPERIENCE: There are both good and bad aspects to this hospital. Sadly, the bad aspects affected me most. The worst part of this treatment facility is the "care" the nurses (do not) provide. You don't always get told who your nurse is, especially if they decide to pre-judge you based on your diagnoses. (This is my own personal, firsthand belief.) They might not approach you because they don't want to be bothered by you. This is an experience I had firsthand. There was a dayshift nurse sitting in the nursing station. I approached her and asked "who is my nurse?", it turned out that she was! I actually had to ask who my nurse was, she never introduced herself to me. Right then and there I knew I was in for a bad stay. I can't prove it; however, I think the nurses do prejudge patients based on their diagnoses (meaning, if you have one that they do "not like", they will avoid frequent interaction with you) That said, nurses are often short-staffed, so this might be a variable in the equation. Basic hygiene NOT allowed. I asked if I could floss my teeth and I was told by my nurse that that was a PRIVILEGE! literally, I am thinking, WTH. When did that become a privilege for BASIC HYGIENE ?!!! I explained to my nurse that I had a gum disorder that would cause my gums to bleed if I did not floss my teeth. Because of that, I would've been susceptible to an infection. I understand that we can't have floss in our own hands because of the metal part; however, they could certainly keep my floss in their medication area and give me a piece of floss that I could go use. But, no... Again it was a privilege. Having been a nurse for 20 years, I am pretty certain that this was out of laziness. If they let me floss, they would've had to let everyone else floss. And a nurse needs to watch you floss for safety reasons. So, can men shave their hair... Yes! Can women floss their teeth... NO ! Hopefully they have made a change with this policy Be aware of your rights. There was one night shift nurse who approached me and talked to me for 15 minutes. I was surprised by this and thanked her for talking with me. It turns out, if you read the paperwork that they give you, the nurses are REQUIRED to spend at least 15 minutes of a 1 to 1 interaction with you. Knowing this from the start will help increase your quality of care when you are in this facility!!! The positive: their facility is very clean, they offer several classes per day that I personally found informative and helpful, they do keep you safe, and I add in that the food is good. Be prepared: as I said previously, if you are admitted to this facility, please know that you are entitled to 15 minutes of 1 on 1 time with your nurse. Know that if you have a condition that is considered "a privilege", please ask to speak to someone in management. Don't just let the nurse tell you no. If management also tells you no, make sure to ask the nurse to DOCUMENT that you asked for what you needed and you were told no. In the practice of nursing, " if it isn't charted, it wasn't done!!! " This will give them pause to think twice about saying no! You need to hold them accountable. Other disciplines: the doctors and social workers were pleasant to interact with. This facility has the potential to be a top-tier facility, you just need to know your rights while you're there. And to the administration, if your nurses are short staffed (which sadly is often the case), you can help them improve care to their patients by hiring enough staff! Yes, I know more FTE's are going to cost you more money; however, it would be worth the investment as I believe you would have more patients wanting to use your facility for their care (in the long run). So please, if you value the quality of care that is given to your patients, spend the money!
