First off, I question the ethics of a funeral home being owned and run by the sitting mayor of the…read morecity. When I was notified of my mother's body being found, someone from Whitfield had already collected her body before I was even formally notified by police of her death. According to people who work in the senior housing facility where my mother lived, this is not an uncommon occurrence. It seems that Mr. Whitfield does ineed use his position as mayor to position his business in a way that is clearly a conflict of interest. That aside, I would like to share my experience with the business as a customer. I dealt with Mr. Whitfield directly, and I can't say it was a positive experience in any way. I understand that we all deal with death differently, but I didn't feel any empathy from this man at all. It was all business with him. At one point, he even referred to "your father" even though it was my mother's body. That lack of attention to detail bothered me. Dealing with them was this agonizing game of phone tag where I ultimately had to get a lawyer involved in order to get my mother's ashes back from them in anything approaching a timely fashion. It took almost three weeks! Almost made the memorial service late. And when I went to pick up her ashes, they had made a mistake on the paperwork that I needed to sign for pickup. Also, a complete lack of sympathy or empathy from them at the time. I cannot recommend against them strongly enough. Learn from my experience, and go somewhere else. Anywhere.

Candice treated our family with genuine compassion and respect during a very difficult time. What…read morestood out most was her honesty -- she did not try to play on our emotions or upsell any services. Some of the other funeral homes were horrible. Their prices were super high and they tried to guilt you into buying more expensive stuff. Her pricing was also remarkably fair, about half the cost of other funeral homes we checked in the Lakeland area. It's rare to find such integrity and care in this kind of business . We are truly grateful for her service and would highly recommend Casket company to anyone in need of trustworthy and compassionate help.

I deeply regret choosing Spangler Cremation Service to cremate my beloved mother…read more It was my wish to have a lock of my mother's hair and a copy of her fingerprints before she was cremated. I paid extra for the fingerprints and watched Kevin write my requests on one of their forms. I stressed to Kevin that this was very important to me. I had not heard from them, so after 10 days I called to ask if I could pick up her ashes. They called back and said that they had "dropped the ball" on getting a lock of my mother's hair and her fingerprints. This has left me devastated and has caused great emotional turmoil. It was very important to me that my mother's remains were treated with dignity, so we read many reviews for several cremation businesses in the area. We weren't even looking for the cheapest service. We just wanted her remains to be treated with care. Although they state that they provide "compassionate care," the fact that they did not review the forms with my requests (which I watched them write down on the form before we paid for the service) before cremating my mother gives me little faith that they treated her with compassion or dignity. There are just some jobs that you cannot afford to "drop the ball" on. It is not like this was a coffee order that they got wrong. This was my mother's remains and I will never get her back. I will never be able to have a lock of her hair or her fingerprints like I wished. Handling the remains of our loved ones is sacred work and it seems like this business has been de-sensitized to the gravity of the service they provide. It is difficult to trust that I even have the correct ashes. And, as I said, the result of their carelessness has caused me great emotional distress. There is absolutely nothing that they can do to remedy this situation as it has left me utterly devastated. Please consider using someone else who will treat your loved one with dignity.

However, after using Hodges twice (in 2007 to cremate my Dad & to hold a memorial service on site) & currently to cremate my mum (w/o a memorial service), I cannot complain about the services my family received. My parents had prepaid for two cremations accompanied by two standard urns & two memorial services. The uneventful experience following my dad's death was welcome. Even the memorial service in Hodge's large chapel went off w/o a hitch. Staff was incredibly friendly, helpful, & respectful. However, since that time, Mr Hodges retired & sold the business. Randy Bush & Lindsey Palmer are the current business owners & funeral directors. Our contract was w/ the prior owner, yet it was immediately honored by the current owners. I recently met w/ Donna to complete the necessary paperwork. It was just three days following my mum's death. Receptionist Carolyn was friendly & gracious. Staffer Donna was as well. She & I completed the paperwork @ a steady pace. There were NO sales pitches. In fact, even though this company was not contractually obligared to refund the money for the memorial service (that we chose not to have), it graciously covered the cost of 10 death certificates (10 × $10 each), as well as the mini urn ($35) I wanted for myself. Due to Covid, the medical examiner's offices in Pasco & Hillsborough now take 7 days to offer their findings. Once that process is complete, the cremation process can begin. The next day, I will be able to retrieve the two urns. I did not take pics of the interior of Hodges only because of grief, but I assure you the small waiting area, offices (each complete w/ a conference table & tactful merchandise displays) & the chapel are very nice. There's also good parking, w/ separate entances to the business office & the chapel. Hodge's main facility is in Dade City. It is where the cremations & all burial preps occur. The two personable & professional young men who removed my mother's body from my home four days ago had been dispatched from Dade City. They were wonderful. I DO NOT hesitate to recommend Hodges, even now that it is owned by a different family. Thank you, Hodges & Donna, for a most respectful process & service.
