This is supposedly one of the best ramen houses in São Paulo, and because of that, this place gets…read morefilled up pretty quickly. Be prepared to wait or come early! Upon walking in, the establishment is bright and smartly decorated. Behind the bar, you can see the ramen chefs working their magic into each bowl. The ramen itself is decently priced (definitely cheaper than the US!), though I was a little disappointed that their tonkotsu ramen wasn't really made from tonkotsu broth, but rather, it was salt or soy based. That being said, it was more than enough to satisfy my ramen craving.

Note the "oh, this is gonna be good" vibe when you enter for the first time. It's been a family-run Liberdade staple for many years and is usually packed with locals at most times of the day. At lunch there may be a wait, however the Maitre-D flips tables fast. Aska serves up big bowls of delicious Ramen and Beef/vegetarian gyozi. Food comes fast, and udon noodle refills are often necessary. Chimchi, cold pickled vegetable salad is also tasty. Goes along well with an agua com gas or Guarana Antarctica. Prices are reasonable for what you get. "Ressaca? Que ressaca??" - Brazilian you

Had lunch here today. I'm kind of a Ramen snob after living in Japan for 15 years, but wanted to…read morefind a restaurant that served Ramen near where I live, versus going all the way out to Liberdade. I searched about 8 Japanese restaurants in the area, and Koban was the only one providing Ramen (Lamen). I was nicely greeted at the door and provided a table for one. The waiter brought a lunch menu and standard menu. I chose to have the Shoyu Lamen (Soy Ramen) and a beer. When ordering, I asked the waiter that my Lamen be very hot, and he acknowledged While waiting for my Lamen, they brought out a small appetizer that was thinly sliced salmon resting in a soy based sauce and garnished with green onion. This was quite good. My Lamen arrived and the temperature was warm to hot, but definitely not really hot. It appeared it had been sitting for a little while before it got served to me as the surface of the broth began to coagulate. While eating the lamen, I found egg shell still attached to the boiled egg, and the pork slices were tough. There were also too many mushrooms placed in the bowl. The broth was quite good. Traditionally, one will drink the broth right out of the bowl in Japan. Unfortunately, the bowls used were ornate and one would not be able to drink the broth out of the bowl, as the broth would spill out the sides of the bowl where it was uneven. Also due to the ornate nature of the bowl, there wasn't enough broth. I like it when the broth is near the brim of the bowl. I may try eating here again, but would not repeat ordering lamen. The dishes from the sushi bar that came out to other tables looked beautiful, ornate and delicious. The staff provided good service and the restaurant had good atmosphere.

There were certainly plenty of Japanese speaking customers mixed in with Portuguese. And I, the odd tourist, felt right at home. The bamboo shoot and shitake mushroom appetizers were delectable. The chicken broth ramen was insipid. The Gyukatsu Kare (breaded fried beef with curry sauce over rice) was better, but not the ultra crispy panko planks I've had in some places. Maybe it was because I ordered it at the end of the night. The Brazilian brewed cold sake was really good. Could hardly tell the difference from Japanese sake. But, the highlight of the dinner of Sanma Shio--grilled pike mackerel with sea salt. Inexpensive for Sanma, uber fresh, grilled crispy so that you could crunch up the head and tail! The service was prompt, efficient and very warm. Even the owner came by to chat several times. Arigato gozaimasu! Obrigado! Thank you.

Something to keep in mind if you're considering going here and you're a visitor. Other than that, the food is pretty standard izakaya fare- not that much of a Brazilian influence from what we could tell. And we're very familiar with the genre (tons of these in the NYC) so we knew what to expect. The food is pretty tasty and the service was pretty good. The restaurant kinda feels like you walked into someone's kitchen which is pretty interesting. But overall we've actually had much better Japanese food. So there's that. But not a bad option if you're looking for something completely different in São Paulo.
