Initially started off as a huge disappointment since we arrived and were told we were not within the "5 minute" grace period so they gave up our table. I am confused at how an establishment can require credit card reservation and give up seats so easily. Truthfully, I believe this place has no respect for Americans visiting. Upon being forced to wait outside, I saw several Brasilian customers arrive and able to be seated without a wait. I would think at such a famous bar, customer service would be a priority but it is not. While outside waiting we decided to go ahead and order hello suckers drink and elegance. The hello sucker was supposed to be less on the sweet side with a combo of tequila blanco, vodka pimenta, dry vermouth. The drinks arrived and honestly was bad. It taste like very bad chicken broth. Finally, we were able to be seated inside. The ambiance is very simple and seating is jam packed with you right next to your neighbor. I told the waitress about the first drink I had, she suggested the Kiss of Life drink which has seco, Johnnie Walker and said this would be better. I gave it a try but it what slightly better than my previous drink. We ordered some food such as gyoza de porco, wonton de camaro and aka teba (fried chicken). The entire meal was probably the worst meal I've had in São Paulo so far. I'm not sure how this place became number 24 on top 50 Bar list but it is a scam. And if you are visiting São Paulo, it is not worth the stress of visiting. There are plenty of restaurants with better food and better drinks.

Food is good but nothing crazy to write about. The drinks are inventive and unique, a great place…read moreto go with friends so you can try a lot of different cocktails

Upon walking in, the establishment is bright and smartly decorated. Behind the bar, you can see the ramen chefs working their magic into each bowl. The ramen itself is decently priced (definitely cheaper than the US!), though I was a little disappointed that their tonkotsu ramen wasn't really made from tonkotsu broth, but rather, it was salt or soy based. That being said, it was more than enough to satisfy my ramen craving.

Note the "oh, this is gonna be good" vibe when you enter for the first time. It's been a family-run Liberdade staple for many years and is usually packed with locals at most times of the day. At lunch there may be a wait, however the Maitre-D flips tables fast. Aska serves up big bowls of delicious Ramen and Beef/vegetarian gyozi. Food comes fast, and udon noodle refills are often necessary. Chimchi, cold pickled vegetable salad is also tasty. Goes along well with an agua com gas or Guarana Antarctica. Prices are reasonable for what you get. "Ressaca? Que ressaca??" - Brazilian you

There were certainly plenty of Japanese speaking customers mixed in with Portuguese. And I, the odd tourist, felt right at home. The bamboo shoot and shitake mushroom appetizers were delectable. The chicken broth ramen was insipid. The Gyukatsu Kare (breaded fried beef with curry sauce over rice) was better, but not the ultra crispy panko planks I've had in some places. Maybe it was because I ordered it at the end of the night. The Brazilian brewed cold sake was really good. Could hardly tell the difference from Japanese sake. But, the highlight of the dinner of Sanma Shio--grilled pike mackerel with sea salt. Inexpensive for Sanma, uber fresh, grilled crispy so that you could crunch up the head and tail! The service was prompt, efficient and very warm. Even the owner came by to chat several times. Arigato gozaimasu! Obrigado! Thank you.

Something to keep in mind if you're considering going here and you're a visitor. Other than that, the food is pretty standard izakaya fare- not that much of a Brazilian influence from what we could tell. And we're very familiar with the genre (tons of these in the NYC) so we knew what to expect. The food is pretty tasty and the service was pretty good. The restaurant kinda feels like you walked into someone's kitchen which is pretty interesting. But overall we've actually had much better Japanese food. So there's that. But not a bad option if you're looking for something completely different in São Paulo.
