The initial interaction involved a $100 diagnostic fee, charged when the mechanic arrived. I found this questionable as I had already provided the diagnostic trouble codes indicating a transmission failure, leaving little ambiguity regarding the necessary work. There was, in my assessment, nothing further to diagnose. After the mechanic completed the initial transmission replacement, a process which took an entirely too long period, my first action was to check the transmission fluid level. I discovered the dipstick was bone dry. When I pointed this out, he initially attempted to blame me for this oversight. How this could be the case, when this mechanic had just completed the installation, was unclear. He eventually relented, and began to address the issue. During this process, he started pumping in universal Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF), not the correct ATF grade specified for my vehicle. I protested this, but was met with resistance and the assertion that "all ATF is the same." By this time, I noticed he was adding a significant quantity of fluid, yet it wasn't registering on the dipstick. A glance underneath the vehicle revealed the reason: a massive ATF slick forming on the ground. The mechanic had apparently failed to use a gasket or RTV sealant when installing the replacement transmission. This necessitated a return visit from the mechanic three days later to properly seal the transmission. Flash forward to three days later, when the mechanic returned and completed the gasket installation. Once he departed, I tested the vehicle and found the transmission was whining fiercely. I complained to him that a newly replaced transmission should not be making such a noise. His response was to "just drive it, it will go away." As I was tired of being without personal transportation, I reluctantly gave it a try. The noise persisted. I called him up again. This time, the call was answered with him yelling at me, stating he didn't want to hear from me for a week, and then abruptly hanging up. The next day, I drove the vehicle, and its condition significantly worsened. The fuel economy plummeted to roughly a third of what it previously was, the horrible whining continued, the vehicle began bucking while in gear, and it lost two gears. That was the final straw. I contacted him again to report the transmission had failed. He never answered. I WOULD NOT utilize his services EVER AGAIN even if it were my only option.
