The staff at Lake Humane Society are purr-fect! I have contemplated about getting a cat for a few years, but never was proactive in doing so. About a month ago, a friend of mine sent me a link to cats that she knew I'd like, which happened to be at Lake Humane Society. On a whim, I decided to submit a inquiry form, never assuming that they'd contact me in less than 24 hours and ask me to visit within another 24. Within 48 hours of submitting my inquiry form, I was at Lake Humane. Going in so soon was honestly a bit nerve wrecking, and due to my trepidation, the staff member suggested that I took my cat home on a foster agreement, rather than adopting so that I could see if I truly was ready to be a pet parent when and to ensure that my prospective pet and I were a match. My cat came already neutered, with his shots, and the staff members were kind enough to clip his nails for me (as I was nervous of doing so myself). In addition, they provide you with a voucher to take your new furry animal to any vet in Lake County, free of charge, as long as you visit within 3 weeks of adopting (in addition to providing you with a years worth of flu shots). If you need any materials for your animal, you can purchase it in-house. I got a scratching post, toys, furniture, carrying case, cat food, and cat nip, all from the society for a very affordable price. I genuinely have nothing negative to say about the Humane Society. My entire experience was a great one. While I have no aspirations of getting another pet, if I did, I know where I'd go. read more

I got my two cats from Lake Humane Society about a year apart. They're amazing. They took such good care of them both first by connecting them with great foster homes. I found one of my cats because I'm friends with her foster and the other's foster is someone I've stayed connected with so they can see how he's doing in his new home! LHS cares so much about their animals and the animals in the community. I've only had great experiences with them. The second cat I adopted is special needs and he has some pretty significant surgeries before he was able to go up for adoption. They really took care of him and because of that he's doing great now! During COVID, when I adopted my second cat, they let us Foster to Adopt to make sure he was a good fit in our home since we weren't able to meet him any other way before. I thought this was a cool program and although I was confident from early on we were going to adopt him, I could see this helping a lot of families before making a big decision like adopting a new pet. They also usually do a ton of really fun events. The pup crawl is one I've gone to several years in a row (pre-covid) and I would highly recommend. read more

This place is awful ! The people working here are completely CLUELESS ! I came up there to look at dogs , found the most precious pit mix. I didn't have time to take him out that day so I came back the next day and asked to take him out. I waited about 10 min next to the dogs cage thinking someone would come over and ask if I needed help or wanted to see a dog .. but that didn't happen ! So I went to the front desk and asked to take the dog out ! She said sure someone will be over.. After waiting for 15 min they send someone over to take him out. The guy came over opened the cage and then said ughhh actually I have to take another dog out first. I said thats fine. 30 min later he came over to take the dog out. I was still fine at this point. I took the dog out and absolutely fell in love with him! I was ready to adopt it that second ! I went to the front desk and told them I have another dog at home and would like to bring her to make sure they get along. She said I couldn't bring her today because I didn't have an appointment for that. I asked to make an appointment she said I couldn't make one for today because there wasn't enough staff. Although there was a ton of people working in there and no customers besides me ! I said ok and asked if my sister could bring her in tomorrow. She was completely clueless as to if that was ok or not. She asked the girl working next to her and she had no idea. They stared into blank space for 2 min until one of them finally said sure I guess. So my sister brought the dog the following day & they said "you're 10 min too early for your appointment you can leave and come back" ... the place is on Tyler boulevard .. where could you possibly go and come back in 10 min ? My sister waited it out in the car , went back and asked to see the dog. THIS PART IS REALLY DISAPPOINTING! They didn't let our dogs meet in the rooms they have instead they did it outside. THEY HAVE NO NICE AREA FOR THE DOGS TO MEET ! They had the dogs meet outside in the front of the building where the parking lot is at on the concrete! You don't even have a patch of grass for these dogs ? Seriously ! Meanwhile cars are coming in and out of here ! Not safe , & also so hectic for the dogs ! They kept the two dogs 10 feet away from each other ! My sister asked for them to bring the dogs closer & they said "no , the way he is looking at her seems like it's not a match" my sister said they are looking at each other because they are the only dogs out here can you let them smell each other ! The guys said no and proceeded to say "this is a Pitbull he's aggressive for her it's not a match you can try a smaller dog" meanwhile the dog PASSED their aggression test with flying colors ! He was not aggressive at all! I don't think people working here should condone to the "aggressive Pitbull" remarks ! My sister was fed up with them & asked if she could walk around and see the other dogs .. they said you cannot take your dog inside ! My dog is an 8 pound yorkie ! I don't see what the problem is ! My sister asked if someone could hold her at the front desk while she looked around ! They said "no but you can leave your dog in the car" IT WAS 80 DEGREES OUTSIDE THAT DAY ! any normal person knows you can't leave a dog in the car let alone someone working in an animal shelter ! My sister ended up leaving then ! After hearing this I was so annoyed / disappointed I called the front desk and asked to speak to a manager ! The girl replied and said she's not in today ! Then I asked to speak to the person who runs this organization! Instead of giving me her number she gave me the number to the other girl at the front desk ! I had no idea that's who she sent me to! After asking who I was speaking to then the girl decided to tell me she wasn't the person running this organization but she did give me the correct number to contact ! I called the owner of the organization but couldn't get ahold of her & whenever she would call me back I didn't have my phone on me.. We've been playing phone tag for weeks now.. besides all of the awful things I have been checking in on this dog & saw he was in the shelter for a whole month where as he could have had a happy home right away ! I just want to say this shelter is awful ! You shouldn't make it so IMPOSSIBLE to adopt an animal from here this is RIDICULOUS !! & I think the people working here NEED a lot more education on everything involved with these pets & adoption! COMPLETELY DISAPPOINTED & DISGUSTED!!!!!!!!!! They should be ashamed of themselves ! These poor animals don't deserve this & should be given every chance to get out of the shelter as soon as possible! read more
