Providence Canyon State Park - Visitors center

Providence Canyon State Park

I wish we had more time here to explore all of the canyons! It was so unusual and fun to walk…read morethrough! There is loads of shade in the interior of the canyon and water does trickle through so expect to get a smidge wet and dusty from the canyon. The shop was loaded with great merch but the bathroom was out of service for us so everyone had to use the single toilet handicapped room which wasn't exactly great. The parking fee and map etc can be a little confusing so just be sure to go inside to make sure everything is on the up and up. The rim trail runs immediately around the visitor center just follow the fencing to the left to stay around the rim go to the right to go down into the canyon itself. Both are worth it. We spent more time in the canyon :)

Based on the numbering I went counter-clockwise from the visitor center, turning left each time there was an option. As far as diverting from the white trail to walk into any of the nine canyons, you are basically walking on riverbed. There are no trails into these canyons, which is very disappointing and, to me, not something I would show on a map. I visited during November of a relatively dry year. What about May after a wet spring? You wouldn't be able to see any of these! My shoes and socks have received a thorough drying as the temperatures warmed, but these chill my review. In order from best to worst: * Canyon #8, if you must pick only one canyon to walk into. There are a number of uninhibited side trails to see and climb (not vertically, only a little bit up the base slope) all different stone walls. * Canyons #3-5 also have nice views, but not as many side trails and a little more fencing/signing telling you not to go any further (though IMO you are OK as long as you don't try to scale rock walls or carve your name). * Canyons #2 and #7 were nothing to write home about. * The trail to Canyon #1 petered out without anything worth photographing. Mostly just walls. * I could not even find trails to Canyons #6 or #9. #9 had a creek split off but it quickly became untraversable. This is where actual trails would help... My view was very dim at that point. I continued back up the white trail to the top. As the trail gets closer to the visitor center, the views do get better. However, in multiple locations, you'll only really getting a good photo by stepping over the wooden fence that is signed DO NOT STEP OVER THIS FENCE. And in one location the fence lets you walk all the way to the edge where the rock drops off - a child could actually slip through the rocks and die without having ever crawled under the fence! Be very careful. Verdict: I wouldn't spend $5 here unless you are a naturalist who doesn't mind getting muddy and taking adventurous risks. Not enough for the average person to warrant a visit compared to some of the deeper, better marked, and safer places I've visited. But I got some decent views in the end so I'll round up.

Though they advertise as a place that offers month to month business, my husband and I were offering them a guaranteed month to month business for a good bit of time while working in the area, however long they would work with us on, bouncing to another place if we exceeded their desired amount of time, and both people we spoke with - a woman one day and a man named Justin another, were very rude and "uppity/snooty". We have a 2023 Primetime Sanibel Widebody 5th wheel, 43 feet in length, very nice condition, and are two professional people (my husband an Operations Manager for a billboard company and I a Bid/Dept Manager for a Food Distributor, with a combined income of over $175k per year) and their response was "we wouldn't be a good fit" after we spoke with them guaranteeing we would abide by their strict rules. When we mentioned we may once in a blue moon babysit our grandkids while there, before I even finished my sentence, we were given a very terse response which was a strong indicator they do not want kids there. Obviously not family friendly. They mentioned not wanting "trashy trailers" and "trailer trash" type people in their campground - of which we aren't, but wow, the judgement - and that they currently have some campers they are "trying to be rid of", so camp with ease or expect to be thrown out. They want only new campers there, and royalty. I guess if you take a stab at them you'll have to see if you meet their high standards or contrarily meet their definition of "trailer trash". Beware, if your camper, though well maintianed yet only a 2021 model, you're trailer trash. Again, very picky, very high standards, strict rules, unbending, uppity, and just rude with a "holier than though" attitude. Apparently not very interested in keeping their business running either. We drove through the park on 4/20/26 and over half their campsites were empty. I wonder why. Yet, they turn down guaranteed month to month business for a time we were willing to allow them to designate. We will gladly take our business elsewhere to a much friendlier staff at a nicer, more secure campground nearby we have recently learned of - where we won't have to listen to trains pass behind us all day, and can watch kids be kids and play. Sad thing is, we've given them our business before while in Columbus, but never will again, and will tell all we know of a large group of campers we are affiliated with of their rude, snooty ways. Traveling through the area? I'd recommend staying elsewhere. Corps of Engineer parks on nearby West Point Lake (Amity, Shaefer Hard, Holiday, and WhiteTail Ridge), a campground on nearby Lake Harding (Blanton Creek), two near Fort Benning (one GA side - Camp David, the other AL side), one in Fort Benning (Uchee Creek), a KOA in nearby Americus, Ga and Auburn RV Resort in nearby Auburn, AL to name just a few. That is, unless you like to hobknob with the snooty folk.

Just got back from an excellent 3.5 day retreat at Butter and Egg Adventures…read more My husband and I brought 25 students, plus our two kids down to Troy. While the website was impressive, we had no idea the treat we were in for! The staff is warm and welcoming. The camp is family run, and it is obvious that the rest of the staff are included in that warmth. Our students had a blast on the zip lines and ropes courses, and grew together as a group through the facilitated team building activities. As a director of Residential Life it was incredibly heart warming watching the students open up to each other and work together in a new way. Honestly, I really can't say enough good things. Even though my husband and I were the only chaperones of 25 teens (with our two kids), we felt relaxed the entire time. Because of the staff's collaboration with us, we knew the students were taken care of. It made the entire adventure a relaxing experience - which, believe me, is a huge feat. While there were threats of a storm (which never happened) we felt perfectly safe with the camp's procedures. Any of our group's random complications were handled with grace and support. You can really tell the thought and care that Susan, Ron, Natalie, and the rest of the crew put into the entire experience. If you are looking for a fun, easy, and transformative experience for a group- I HIGHLY recommend you contacting Susan and Ron at Butter and Egg Adventures!!
