Lake Ellyn Park is located in the suburb of Glen Ellyn, away from the traffic of major streets. Coming off St. Charles Road into the winding backroads of the surrounding neighborhood, it is easy to take the wrong turn and miss it. Having been here in both spring and winter, I can say the park is beautiful both times of year.
We came here on a frigid Saturday morning for skating on the frozen lake. Parking along the street is best, since the small lot next to the field house (Lake Ellyn Boathouse) is big enough for only a few cars. The field house has plenty of room inside. It functions as a place to get your skates on, warm up, and buy concessions inside.
Since we've had a couple mild winters in recent years, there has been no skating on the lake the previous 2 years, but thanks to the cold streak we've been on, the lake is frozen solid. The park district people cleared out a huge open space on the 10 acre lake for ice skating. Saturday mornings when the lake is frozen, you can find speed skaters getting together for impromptu racing or practicing laps around the lake, including my little guy who's pretty fast himself.
There are park employees monitoring the ice, with a section reserved for figure skating and another for hockey. In the afternoon, this place can get pretty busy with all the skaters coming out, but on a Saturday morning you can have almost the entire lake all to yourself. The size of the rink makes it a truly great place to skate, as I can't think of another town with a free outdoor ice skating area that comes close to this.
While conditions can vary depending on weather, the Glen Ellyn Park District has a hotline for skating, so check to see if it's open before you pack up your skates and come here. read more
