We arrived at Lake Como after a day at Diavolezza ski resort looking at the Morteratsch Glacier at 10,000 feet. Went from 10,000 feet to maybe 1,500 feet elevation.
Drove by motorcoach with our tour group from the Italian Alps to the shores of Lake Como. Took a boat ride on a large ferry, across the Lake to the world famous tourist town of Como.
Deep blue water, with mountains rising straight out of the water. Villas of the famous and small towns on islands alongside the water on the steep sides of the mountains.
In Como, had a couple of hours to eat lunch and check out the town. Lots of restaurants, including McDonalds. Also a casino to separate you from your money.
Make sure you use the restaurant restrooms before leaving, as you paid for it with your "coperto", or table cover charge, which is often $3 per person for lunch.
Had to ask around for public restrooms, which were scarce. And once you find the restroom, no guarantee of toilet paper, and no guarantee of toilet seat!
Went from overcoat and long pants one day to shorts, t-shirt, and sandals the next day during the great heat wave in Europe in late July 2019. Despite the temperatures, saw almost nobody wading in the Lake -way too cold in the 1500 foot deep waters!
.
Would spend only a few hours at Lake Como before heading to a far larger alpine lake, Lago Maggiore, where we would survive 90+ degree temperatures for the next for 4 days.
Our tour group averaged in their mid 70s, so I was one of the few to go to shorts and sandals. read more
