My husband and I visited Lake Banook and Sullivan's Pond last fall (when we took a cruise from Boston to Montreal) in search of the apartment building my dad lived in during WWII. His father was on the HMCS Athabaskan when it was torpedoed; he was listed as MPD.
Dad had fun living above Lake Banook. He told me a story of when he (age 7) and his brother (age 5) were skating on the ice and got too close to the dam (lock) and the ice had thinned. His brother fell through the ice and Dad saved him. I asked what his mother thought of the "little expedition", and he said, she never found out, "We hid it from her."
I fell in love with Findlay Park, Sullivan Pond, the fountain, and the bigger Lake Banook - absolutely gorgeous. Only wish I had had more time to layout a blanket and enjoy the beautiful weather and scenery.
By the way, I never did find the apartment. If anyone knows if #1 Beachnut Apts on Crichton Street still exists, I'd love to hear about it or be directed to a photo. If so, could you post here and I'll check back? Thanks. read more
