It was the perfect way to end the week. This is such a gem of a class that it feels like a gift to be able to be in such a sacred space. Their energies are so pure and calming, you can't help but sink into your mat and just float away onto a cloud. There is a cap to the class of about 10-12 students so it keeps the space intimate so you really get to experience this in a small setting. If you've never tried any energetic healing or practices but you're familiar with restorative yoga, this is a great way to introduce yourself to a new experience.

Our favorite is Rosey Wyland (who, by the way, is also a therapist). And, no wonder: her classes are warmly supportive and attentive, and she seems to really get the idea of what it means to be a beginner. What I don't understand is why they call the Saturday class a yoga basics class. I know I'm not an athlete, but the class is so darned hard and fast without clarity on which position was which -- really a yoga flow class -- that it seems like a misnomer to suggest it's for those needing guidance on yoga poses. Both times I've gone, they did not offer any modifications when I had to stop due to wrist pain. I wish they would just call it what it is: non-basic yoga for sturdy people. ;) Whatever the case, Rosey's class really is a beginner's class (or for those, like me) who have an injury. (Speaking of which, did you know that the main injury people, esp. women get, from yoga is tendonitis in the wrist? http://www.hss.edu/newsroom_yoga-injuries-on-the-rise-in-women.asp). However, with the right accommodations, yoga can also be immensely healing. That's why I go. Sellwood Yoga is a lovely studio, and Rosey does offer modifications for injuries, and I really love her class.

Let me preface this by saying I am a complete yoga novice. In fact, this was my first yoga class;…read morefile that away. The studio is located atop the Camamu Soap barn. There's a beautiful courtyard and and inviting stairway up to the studio, but I walked it brimming with trepidation, fully expecting a room full of judge-y yogis snickering at my inability to hold an upward facing downward salute to the dog (or something similar). That was simply not the case. I was greeted by Christina who put me at ease immediately. She is incredibly welcoming and immediately set me up to get started, pulling out a blanket, cushion, bricks, and showing me where to lay my mat. She inquired about conditions I might have, why I was there, what I wanted from the visit, what activities I do, basically getting an idea of what she should assist me with so that I could get the most possible from my class. And the class was a great one. The ambiance is solid: dim lights, hardwood floors, soft music. There were 5 other people in the class, seemingly of various skill levels from injured and healing to definitely a regular. Christina did a good job ensuring we all had options to tailor the practice for our own needs; she frequently stopped by to give direction and her technique in instructing is incredibly honed. I left the class and felt like my body had been stretched like never before, but not in a painful way, I actually felt incredibly strong. My muscles weren't sore (and after covering roughly 45 miles hiking and running in the past 4 days, they were sore when I went in). They were revitalized. I am fully aware how hokey that sounds, but it's true so deal. The verdict? I'll definitely be returning and can't recommend it solidly enough.

I want to feel good in my body for as long as I possibly can. I always feel that this is a top priority for Christina and her alignment-based style of yoga. I see many of her students are healthy, strong and injury free well into their 80s and that is inspiring. Conniyoga is a great place to practice no matter your experience, gender or age. Christina quite literally has your back.

I have been practicing Bikram yoga for 2 decades and it has been incredibly healing and restorative…read morefor both my body and mind. What Leah and the team here have done with this practice is very intentionally and subtly updated it. Everybody knows that the practice can be rigid and while that is good to keep true to the core practice, it can limit and outright alienate certain minds and bodies. The update to the 90 minute 26 & 2 enable more flexibility while staying true to the core (this is 100% the bikram sequence, don't worry) - with solid direction from Leah (Bikram yoga trained), who is an exercise expert (educated & experienced), a massage therapist and ballet dancer. So it's not just "do you" (although this is encouraged, not repremanded) instead, there are subtle modifications offered that address all bodies. They also have 60 minute classes for the 26 & 2 plus Vinyasa, wall yoga and so much more. Cryotherapy is offered and Leah offers body work. Also, and so importantly, this is absolutely THE HOTTEST studio in Portland (trust me, I have been to them all) but you can situate yourself at different places in the room to get a little more heat or a little less. Its a welcoming, sweet community and all of the teachers are premium. I truly believe this studio and practice are for everyone. One last note - the teachers here do not call people out or act aggressively about your practice. At all. They offer clear, wise instruction to the group and let your practice be completely yours as it should be.

This is, hands down, the best hot yoga studio in Portland--and I've tried many over the years. Every single instructor is incredible (Leah, Roxanne, Julia, Tucker, Becca--and more amazing humans I'm surely forgetting). Hot yoga is both my religion and my workout, and Agni does it right. I genuinely love practicing the same Bikram poses over and over--it's grounding, powerful, and transformative. My mental and physical health have never been better, and I happily make it to class about three times a week. The studio itself is absolutely lovely: spotless, welcoming, and perfectly set up for those of us who like our hot yoga HOT. Agni never disappoints. I've also recently tried the cryotherapy and loved it, and I can't wait to check out the harmonic egg and wall yoga next. If you're even thinking about trying Agni, do it. The community here is just as amazing as the classes--so warm, supportive, and welcoming. Truly the perfect vibe. ‍

I'd seen a few local yoga studios in my new town but was unsure where to begin. Then one day, my daughter and I were having lunch at Chuck's Place (now closed). Through the window, I spied Imagine Yoga studio, so we went to take a look. At that time they were offering a new student special that was in my budget so I signed up. I'm so glad that I did! This place has become my new yoga home. I've participated in a retreat led by its owner, Kristina, which was a pivotal experience in my life. I've enjoyed several special events (Yoga in the Vineyard, Full Moon Circle) and had nothing but beautiful times with this lovely community. The studio was recently renovated, right before COVID closures, and I love the new airy space. Because the studio hosts a variety of teachers, you can tailor your yoga needs to what your SELF is needing each time. I particularly love Kristina's Flow class and the Calm yoga Nidra. During quarantine, I was relieved that they began offering online classes (still in effect) and now, not only can I do the classes from the comfort of my home, but the sessions are recorded and I have access to the class for the day... this is so helpful! Imagine is a small, woman-owned business, operated respectfully, inclusively and holistically. I 100% recommend practicing yoga here.

Yoga studios are pretty sparse in this area of town, and since I now work south of Portland proper and can't get downtown for class regularly at my preferred studio, I tried out the suburban offerings. I got a month-long unlimited new student pass for $40, which was nice. The studio has an okay variety of classes; due to my work schedule, I was only able to make it to the restorative and regular "flow" classes, so my experience was admittedly somewhat limited. Still, I ended the month feeling pretty underwhelmed by my experience, and don't see myself returning. The restorative classes were largely good, with some exceptions - I had one very odd experience that involved lots of standing around and little actual yoga, and one class where the instructor opened the door on a cold, wet December evening and I had to wrap the class blanket around me to keep from shaking. The regular "flow" classes are very slow and seem better suited for yoga beginners. None of the instructors I practiced with offered hands-on adjustments - in fact, most of them just stayed on their mats while leading class. The clientele skews older, which isn't surprising for this part of town. Folks seem to know one another, and the studio seems to have a nice little community going, but it wasn't a community I felt particularly drawn to or welcomed by. The studio space itself is nice, calm and clean; the free tea is a nice touch. The charge for mat use is not, although I overheard one instructor say it isn't really enforced. Given the choice, I'd rather drag myself to NW for a studio experience where the instructors are more engaged with their practitioners and the classes challenge me better.
