We, on the other hand, like to eat, what we catch. I have been on the Magellan more than half a dozen times. Mostly with Jason (and could not recommend him enough), who this past week we found out was no longer working with Lenny. Why? Because Lenny is too cheap. We tried to book a trip this past Monday (June 25, 2018) and Lenny insisted that we start an 8 hour trip at 3:00 a.m. Who wants to go fishing that early in the morning? Finally we negotiated a 10:00 a.m. start time. The idea was to catch striped bass (and the occasional blue) to start off, and then come back for porgies and black sea bass. The first fish that we caught was a little over 32 inches; the second 34; the third 35 inches. At that point, Lenny declared that any fish over 34 inches was "commercial" and we could not keep - we kept fishing until each one on the boat reached the one fish (under 34 inches) limit, leaving Lenny with 5 stripers, some over 40 inches, which Lenny pretended that "did not exist". He also suggested that that porgy and black sea bass fishing "has not been good lately" - so we cut our trip to 3.5 hours. Yep - $750.00 for 3.5 of fishing - mostly, catching fish for the captain. I called Lenny to express my disappointment, and he has not bothered to called me back. I get that money is his underlying objective, and I don't mind paying him fair rates, but I felt cheated for bringing the least amount of fish home, from any other time that we have gone fishing, while blistering my hands, catching fish for Lenny.

I have never fished before in my life. Not that it makes me any less of a man, (I mean, I've…read morechopped down trees with my bare hands, I eat steak on the regular, I've punched things and I drink Jack Daniels), however, I felt like my life was missing something. I'm a hunter-gatherer, and I haven't hunted or gathered anything outside of a grocery store. Enter Schooney Charter Fishing. This guy was amazing on a number of levels. I went with two of my siblings and my brother brought along his two sons, ages 9 and 5. First off, they make this as effortless as possible, bating your hooks and casting for you. If you get curious, ask and they showed you how. The captain and his sidekick were extremely patient with my nephews, answering their never-ending supply of questions. They moved from spot to spot, always keeping in contact with other boats to find out where you would have the most success. We fished mainly for Sea Bass, and the occasional Blue Fish. However, they also offer small tuna fishing, shark fishing and cod fishing earlier in the season. Also, on your way back into the harbor, he'll stop by his lobster traps, and whatever is in there, you can have as well. Nice little added bonus. The pricing isn't all that bad, ranging in between $400 and $600 depending on how long you stay out, or if you go tuna fishing, as that's a longer trip out to sea. But if you have a decent day, you can basically make it back in fish. After your day is done, they will clean and fillet your fish for you. Grab a cooler, because you are not going to want to let any of your catch spoil. I've been scarfing down Sea Bass for the past three days like it was my job. Which is good, because since I've discovered "Yelp" I've been paying a lot less attention to my real job. Added Bonus: We had a whale pop up about 10 feet away from the boat....free whale watching....suck it tourists paying $29 for the Provincetown whale watch....

Captain Darren is cool, personable, and informative. He and his pilot plane know how to get you up close and personal with white sharks. We lost count at 8! His pre-trip communication was great. Five days beforehand he warned us that the weather was looking questionable for our scheduled trip on a Sunday. Then when it was certain our trip could not happen as planned, he moved things around to fit us in on Saturday. The last shark we saw was hunting in shallow water, circling and putting on a great show. Our time should have been up but Captain Darren kept us moving alongside it for an extra half hour (without being asked!) despite being the end of what had to be a very long, breakless day for him. Then he sent us photos from our trip just a few hours later! Captain Darren is truly committed to giving his guests the best experience possible and he succeeds at it. I would not hesitate to recommend Captain Darren and Monomoy Sportfishing/Chatham Shark Tours to anyone who dreams of seeing Great White Sharks or enjoy any of the other tours offered.
