The young man who welcomed me invited me to join a talk about the history of silk manufacturing in…read moreLyon he was doing for a class. It was in French, but I was able to understand it well, I just can't respond in French when it's sort of technical! The talk included how Francois I created the trade and how Lyon had at its hight over 5,000 small manufacturers. This store is well known for their loomed designs, where the silk is woven with colors and more. The work is absolutely stunning and I wish I could have bought so much more! I picked two amazing jacquard shawls, a silk square with a tulip design for my sister, a beautiful jacquard tie for my cousin and a hand painted silk scarf. I truly loved the selection, and it was VERY hard to choose. The prices seemed extremely fair for the work that goes into the pieces. If I bought them in the US, they'd be triple the price or more. The store is small and adorable, but the best part was the learning about the manufacturing of such stunning things. I'm glad I bought what I did, but I could have bought so many more pieces!

This little shop tucked back behind what looked like an ally was recommended by a local. It took…read moreme FOREVER to find it but it was worth the trek. First off, there is a long tradition behind the silk industry in Lyon and I was seeking as special gift that could be found no where else but Lyon. This is THE place for such a thing. The employees were friendly, helpful, funny, interactive... and every positive adjective I can think of. I kept picking things and thinking "too old for a twenty something?" and finally I just told the charming employee what I was looking for, a bit about the person's taste, why I was buying and she immediately plucked off the display EXACTLY what I had envisioned in my mind! If you haven't visited, they do tours (good for kids) on hand silk screening, you can buy silk ready to "do it yourself" and they just have some beautiful stuff. I'm not a big scarf person but if I had the money to buy several of the big velvet and silk scarfs, they would have been a stunning valance in one of my rooms at home! I hope you go and enjoy their products and genuine charm as much as I did!

I walked by after an appointment at the spa down the street. I noticed a gorgeous men's lapel pin…read morein the window and came back a few days later. The pin was handmade in the store, out of pure silver. It was really reasonably priced, and, best of all, cool as f*{k. I bought it for my husband. It's such a good and unexpected piece of men's fashion. There are two storefronts, a men's and a women's right next door to each other. There are workspaces in both, so if you're lucky you might even catch the magic being created and get to learn about these amazing artisanal jewelry creations handcrafted in the heart of Vieux Lyon. The couple who owns this business (as well as the artists behind everything sold) seem so so nice. Sasha was kind enough to tell me about their passion (this business) for a while. I went to a different store afterwards and someone saw me carrying the black alchemy bag and had to stop me to talk about how his favorite ring he's ever purchased came from The Black Alchemy. (Then he showed me he was currently wearing it.) He said he gets so many compliments on it, and he confirmed that the owners are incredible humans. If you live in Lyon, support local. If you're a tourist, skip the other dumb plastic stuff in Vieux Lyon and get yourself something you'll actually enjoy owning as a souvenir. You'll be shocked at how reasonable the prices are (my large, solid silver lapel pin purchase was 80€)! I saw things on the website from ~50€ (and then of course a wide range of pricing all the way up to and including luxury diamond rings...) For reference, I also bought an umbrella in Vieux Lyon and it was a piece of garbage and cost not so much less.

Located in…read morethe charming beautiful old city, this wonderful shop has thousands of prints, engravings, lithographs, drawings, and other original art that is out in the open and categorized for you to thumb through and browse. There's everything from old maps, to street scenes, repoductions of famous paintings, animals, flowers, nudes, contemporary prints, and virtually any kind of art you can think of. Prices seem very reasonable - I got an signed/numbered lithograph from the 50's for 125 euros, and a beautiful, century-old engraving of a nude playing the violin for 10 euros. I could have looked forever, and can't wait to come back! The staff was very helpful, and packed up my purchases in cardboard to protect them during my journey.
