In brief, Mark is not only an incredible goldsmith and designer but also very personable and kind…read more He always does his best to make room in his schedule to talk about what you want and will meet you where you're at financially. At length, when designing my wedding ring to match my fiancée's ring which is an heirloom from my grandma (which he had cleaned, engraved, and fixed up a bit already) he gave me a few design ideas, then I gave him something completely different that I had already thought about. Mark got excited about my idea and ran with it, completely leaving his ideas behind. He didn't try to push at all, he just started brainstorming off of what I gave him. Together we came up with an idea which I was very happy with. He then gave me a ballpark idea of price, and said if that was too much he could make it less wide and/or thinner to knock down the price of the ring. Then the real treat, I presented my grandparent's wedding bands and said I wanted them to be made into the ring, he weighed them and assured me that when the ring was finished he would deduct their weight from the price. If you've ever tried to do something like this before you know that the jeweller will usually buy your gold back (at half price or so) then sell it to you in the ring. While you are getting the ring at a discount price, you're still paying for your own gold! Not just the labour put into it! Mark just used my gold and took it off the price of the ring which brought down the cost considerably. It was a pleasure to do business with Mark, he was professional and cordial in every way.

I love his more modern style, although he seems very flexible to the customer's preferences. I went to Mark to get some custom cufflinks made from ancient Roman coins. Not only had Mark done a fair amount of work with old coins previously, but he also had some great suggestions about how to set them and how to keep the price down to within my preferred price range. He started by talking me through what I wanted, estimating the price range I could expect depending on various options, and understanding exactly what I was looking for. Then he followed up with a few quick sketches to give me an idea of options to choose between. The cufflinks were completed on time and look great; the recipient was very pleased. I'd love to come back to Mark and get something for myself too sometime!

The sale items are always in stock. I resent the offer to buy a protection plan. A store should stand behind their products like Birks and Ann Louise jewelers. The price point is suitable for most because the gold content is 10 or 14 kt. The diamond clarity will also be a bit lower on the scale. These are all completely tolerable if it means affordability. I went in for the first time early March (2013) to get a print framed for a donation item for a silent auction and brought in personal items for the house. They spent the time helping me find a frame that would accent the red in the photo (it was taken in Africa) and also helped pick a great mat for it.--which I recently found out they upgraded to museum to really help elevate the photo! I brought in 4 other canvas paintings to get stretched and framed. And after much discussion and playing around, they really helped me come up with the best options for the pieces and didn't pressure me at all. I ended up getting one stretched on canvas and the other 3 mounted on foam core and framed (best decision ever for these 3). They really did take the time to make sure I was happy with my decision! And another thing, I brought in a very sentimental piece from my trip and it was probably the most difficult to pick a frame for but they still pulled as much as possible and helped me come up with a decision that I was very very happy with (I swear it was at least an hour!). I have to say, these guys really do understand the art of framing! I went to go pick it up and was floored by how beautiful it turned out! I loved it and would recommend taking the time to let them figure out what you like and go from there. If you go in with an idea, they really can run with it and their selection is so vast that you really can trust their recommendations and simple tweaks. Truly, the art of framing is mastered here!

It's so much cheaper than anywhere in the city, but it's a long way to drive. Convenient location is why I chose Mill Creek. I have only seen women working in this shop. I'm very impressed. I discovered Clayworks Studio Link through a "fieldtrip" when I was working at a childcare centre…read more They came over and did a workshop with us at the centre, and it went great. The kids and staff (including myself) loved it! The lady from the studio brought over all the supplies, and everyone received their own ceramic tile to paint. She had an array of stencils available for those of us who hadn't a clue what to do. She was very patient with the kids (we had a large group) and helped them out with their tiles. Afterwards, the tiles were taken back to the studio to be fired up and glazed, and were given to the kids a couple weeks later. I highly recommend Clayworks for your next party or if you work with kids. They host painting parties, workshops, and various pottery classes at their studio. They also offer school outreach programs and teacher workshops. For drop-in painting, the price you pay for your piece includes everything from the paint to the glaze, so the number is already calculated for you. It's a great way to fire up your imagination, and hey, Christmas is coming up soon -- why not do something different?
