The good thing about Northwest Laboratories is that they're part of MultiCare and the results is uploaded on MyChart. Another good thing is that you dont need appointment to get your labs done. Here is the downside, and this is not just for this location but most of Northwest Laboratories. Be prepared to wait like you're at the DMV. Everyone comes here for lab, on top of the patients that come out of this clinic after their appointment (this one houses Mary Bridge Children's hospital clinic and Multicare Family Practice in same building). So just pack your patience. First things first: like all other Northwest Laboratories, you gotta fill out one of those Blue slips upon arrival, no questions asked. The faster you fill that out, the quicker you will be seen. Its actually crowded in early morning because people want to get their blood drawn and break their fasting asap, but afternoons are just as crowded. The staff are kind and the lab staff are very knowledgeable and professional. Some labs can take a while to get your results but this one is very quick in my experience, coming from a person who has lab tests every 2 months for past 20 years. This location is smaller than the Pearl street (Tacoma) location but they are located in less busier commercial mall so I like it here for that, and quicker results. Lab staff probably are some of best I've experienced with! Lastly if you're Overlake Medical Center (Bellevue) patient, its also a plus because Overlake is now owned by Multicare and everything on MyChart is easy peasy.

This is a walk-in lab and they do all kinds of testing. I come here to get my thyroid levels checked every few months. They're always quick and helpful, kind and personable at the front desk. They get you checked in and then you wait... they'll call your name and once you go back into the lab area they are quick about their business but do a good job. I get my blood drawn a LOT and it's always nice when you're phlebotomist actually knows what they're doing. If you come early (7:30-8), the wait can be longer because everyone who is waiting on fasting blood work tends to check in first thing. Other busy times are lunchtime, and around 4 right before they close. I've see the wait shortest in the late morning or early afternoon. Can't say I have a ton of choices because this is where my doctor sends my lab request but I'm glad it's here. :)

We moved back to Washington and have had a heck of a time getting all of our medical stuff set up…read moreand straightened out. I went to MultiCare as a kid, so it was sort of my default when I started looking for a PCM for our family, who is on Tricare Select (Active Duty Military Insurance)... we checked with a lot of other places - EVERYONE is backed up at least a few months, especially if you're establishing new patient care. 3-6 months seemed the standard wait time for an appointment. I called back in late August, and they said they had a new Doctor to the practice - Dr Shands - whose schedule was still filling up and they could see us in early November. *sigh* Ok, yes. We'll take it if that's the best we can do. 2 months and change didn't sound so bad after being quoted at least 3 months everywhere else. Yes, just give it to us. Hopefully she's nice. I am NOT SORRY for taking Dr Shands as soon as they offered it. She is absolutely wonderful. Dr Aurora Shands and her nurse Amy has seen myself and two of my children this week and she has been wonderful. I haven't felt as heard and cared for under the watch of a medical team as I did with them. I'm stoked to have such an attentive, compassionate, talented doctor as our PCM. My kids adore her. My four year old was so scared to go to the doctor but Amy and Aurora put them at ease so well! The check-in process was swift and easy! They actually mailed me my paperwork ahead of time, so all I had to do was bring in that and the records from our last doctor and pay my co-pay and we were all ready to go! We have had both afternoon and morning appointments- in both cases, the office was running smoothly and on-time. I'm also happy to say that they have a lab on-site which is awesome for me. I have an autoimmune disorder that requires quarterly blood work to manage my medication and that makes my life just a little easier, not having to drive cross-town for labs each time. Thank you Dr Shands, Amy, Brandy, and the MultiCare team for the solid and empowering healthcare experience this week! You've helped to restore a huge chunk of faith I'd begun to lose after many years of frustration with finding healthcare providers that meet us where we need. THANK YOU!!!

Update: They got back to me via email and stated that they were having staffing issues. Last week…read moreon Wednesday in these emails, I was told that a MRI on additional area could not be scheduled at this time because while they had the order from my doctor it had not been authorized by my insurance. I had a MRI today for a different area. The technician that performed my MRI was great and used plenty of humor to help make the time go by. Five star experience on the actual MRI. On my way out the door, I stopped at the desk and asked the receptionist if there was an update available on where my approval was at for the other MRI area. It had been approved by my insurance. Rayus had not contacted me at all to let me know it was approved or get me scheduled - they have my email and text. When they checked me in, they made zero mention of it. I just happened to find out because I asked about it. Their administration side of things is just bad.

The woman at the front desk yesterday afternoon/early evening was incredibly rude and dismissive…read more My husband came down with paper orders for an MRI immediately following his appt and tried to explain that we do not need prior authorization. The woman at reception immediately shut him down (after being seemingly dumbfounded that we would even ask for such a thing), refused to even double check with our specific plan, and as a result he wasn't able to get an MRI with Rayus in a timeline that our insurance absolutely does allow. Obviously if surgery is needed we want that to happen as soon as possible. We reached out to our insurance immediately after this experience and our personal advisor with our insurance confirmed that this woman at Rayus was, in fact, completely wrong and we did not need a prior authorization because of an agreement that our insurance has with Rayas. This has the potential to actually cause harm to patients who may need something stat and are unable to get it based on over-confidence and an unwillingness to consider that patients may know their own healthcare plans and the requirements needed for different services. It never hurts to take two minutes to double check, but she acted like our very existence was an annoyance from the moment we walked in the doors. We fortunately were able to schedule with a different radiology organization for today, as they had zero issue actually looking at our specific plan to confirm what we knew--no prior authorization is needed. Then we were able to schedule a follow up dr. appt for the day that this employee was first allowing us to schedule the MRI; this demonstrates that she would have delayed him getting medical attention from his doctor by over one week for no reason at all. Not only is this not great for patient care/health, but it also ended up in losing us as a client and the revenue that would bring into Rayus. I would imagine that our insurance has a specific agreement with Rayus to waive prior authorizations in order to avoid experiences like we just had. I hope that there is some retraining that will be done on how to interact with people, what is actually required on different healthcare plans, and how to quickly double check requirements rather than the immediate "I know more than you" approach we got. Many of us actually know our healthcare plan requirements (despite the assumption that we are clueless) but even if we didn't, there would have been much better ways to handle this interaction that wouldn't have us leaving and commenting about how rude she was/that we may not want to go here anyway. My husband tried to call today to cancel our appt and explain that the information we got was wrong, but after being on hold for over 15 minutes he hung up. Based on the reviews, it seems like we aren't the only ones that she has left a negative impression on.
