I love Döners. Superhahn was the place where I enjoyed my first Döner Kebap in Germany after nearly…read morea decade of being away. And how fitting for it to be in the city where it was apparently born--Berlin, one of the street food capitals of the world.
Now, Superhahn, like many Döner shops isn't an outdoor stand; it has its own space with a small dining area. But with how efficient these places are run, unless, there is a line out of the door, you can get in and out with your food in a couple of minutes. That's the way to do it, since it's made to be a dish of convenience.
So I ordered the Döner Gemuse, told them to put everything on it (lamb, vegetables, and sauce between pita), and got it "zum mitnehmen" (to go). As I walked to wait for my bus, unwrapping the foil and seeing the meat steam up, I felt a moment of pride having bought one of the best culinary inventions of the urban foodie world. Taking a bite through the crunch of the bread and tasting the explosion of flavor was just as glorious as I had dreamed of for so many years. It was all gone before my bus arrived.
And a note for visitors: it is an easy bus or train ride to get to this location, as it's only steps away from the transit stops around a shopping area. Now make it a mission to get a good Döner at Superhahn!
