Fuego Bar & Grill - Steak cooked medium rare with mushrooms and peppercorn sauce

Fuego Bar & Grill

We stumbled on Fuego Bar and Grill by accident during a town parade and celebration kicking off the…read moreholiday season. The streets were packed with families and the boats in the harbor were all lit up. The restaurants were all filled to capacity but on our third try we were able to get seated at Fuego. Fuego is beautiful inside and all the tables face giant windows on the marina. You can also dine on the outside terrace. Even in the cold temperatures people were bundled up eating and drinking. From the service, drinks, and the food our experience was wonderful. The Long Islands were strong and packed a punch. We started with a bowl of creamy tomato and smoked paprika soup. It was excellent. Good flavor and consistency. From there we had the seafood trio. Wonderful presentation of cod, gamba (prawns), and salmon. The flavorful burre noisette sauce was excellent. The steak was expertly grilled with a nice medium rare center. We passed on dessert but decided on coffee before heading back into the cold. Our experience at Fuego was great, five stars!

We stopped for lunch at the Fuego Bar & Grill, a classy, upscale pub around the corner from the boardwalk, where vendors peddle classic Dutch kitsch such as wooden shoes, traditional costume photography, postcards and other tourist bait (although the almost-next-door Cheese Factory Volendam and attached museum is absolutely worth the price of admission; you will not walk away with out a few wedges!). While not exactly traditional Dutch cuisine (the menu is similar to an American seafood and steakhouse, with some regional European flair), the steaks here were juicy and cooked to order, and to perfection. Salad was crisp and not drowned in dressing, and fries were thick, steak-cut and golden brown. While you won't get any adventure points for branching out and trying something new and exotic, you will have a hard time finding a better restaurant in Volendam.

Since we were only together briefly, my fellow Facebook/Runkeeper friends wanted to celebrate. This restaurant is a really nice steak house, but I'm vegetarian. (This wasn't my choice and I didn't know of any options, being a visitor. So yes, they pulled a vegetarian into a meat house. I suppose if they ever visit the States, I'll make them eat brussel sprouts lol.) Other than the Catch of the Day option, there was the risotto on the menu. I must say it was an excellent choice because the taste was exceptional! When they found out that it was my birthday (I guess it was a given due to loud singing), our beautiful server gave me a gift of their award winning house gin and a bottle of tonic. While I'm not really a gin drinker, I've not decided what to do with it yet. It will keep for now. That was really nice of them. The atmosphere is low key and casual. We had a great time. If you're a meat eater, and in accordance with comments from the carnivores in my group, I'd recommend this place for dining when you're in the vicinity of Leiden. Cheers! #leidenmarathon #wilworksUK

El Gaucho - Lamb chops

Yesterday I went to have dinner with a friend at El Gaucho in Leiden. I must say that it is more…read morethan 10 years that I go there and as much as I find the wine selection not the best, the food has always been quite good. I had a very bad experience with a waiter, possible the manager of the restaurant, I am not sure, he behaved like he was in charge. I called to reserve a table for two for the evening, I asked for a table close to a window, if possible. When I arrived I was given not a table at the window, while there was a free table (not marked as reserved) close to a window, a table for 4 people. I asked if I could get that table if free, since it was already 20:15 (it was unlikely for them to fill that table), he said no because I had bookd just a few hours earlier, I then asked to see other available tables in the back of the restaurtant, and he eventually accomodated me on a table for 4. So, the feeling was that I could not get a table close to a window just because he said so. OK. After a few minutes a table for 2 close to a window got available and somebody else kindly transfered me there. When I order the food, I was clarifying with the waiter the piece of meat I wanted, this guy come close, jumped into the conversation and told me I should not ask such things and have no expectations that my wishes could be fulfilled (I have asked for the same thing everytime I have been there for the last 10 years and was never disappointed, and also yesterday eventually what I got was ok), still this guy had to be like that with me. Then, at 21:30 we were brought the menu for dessert, at 21:42 we asked for a dessert, and the same guy told us that the kitchen was closed at 21:30, we were not reminded of that when they brought us the menu, nor we knews what time it was, we were having a good time and did not mind the time. I asked to still make an effort, as we really wanted to have a dessert, which by the way is not something that you cook on the moment, it is just something you place on a dish and bring to the table. Anyway, the guy (still the same guy) said that that was impossible, and he refused to go and ask in the kitchen, and treted me like I was crazy just only asking for it. Left us with no dessert. He said we could order coffees, we said no, and he brought us the bill 3 minutes after that (we did not ask for it), and 3 more minutes after someone else came with the machine to make us pay (again, we did not ask for it, and they even refused to split the bill). Result, this guy ruined the good experience we were having. He works in the hospitality business but he is definitely an amateur of this business and ruined the experience for us, it felt like he was being mean to me from the moment I stepped into the restaurant. Not going to El Gaucho anymore, there are many other good places for steak in Leiden or in Den Haag. I am very disappointed!

The mixed grill offered a bit of all of the meat selections, sans the chicken. Everything was flavorful. Do note that there is charcoal continuing to heat/cook the mixed grill, so you'll want to shuffle stuff around so you don't over cook the beef cuts. Desserts were outstanding. Our Birthday Boy had the apple pie. It came with some celebratory fireworks! The crepes and chocolate moose were cry good as well.
