The dining room was in an atrium: lots of dark wood and glass. Very striking in appearance. We opted for the 7 course tasting menu with wine pairings. What we didn't realize was that this tasting menu would be tantamount to going 12 rounds in a boxing ring. Here's the blow by blow. First they bring you an amuse bouche: a piece of bread that tasted like it had hints of cheddar and bacon. Ok, I feel good. Round 1 and I've been training for this all my life. Then they hit you with a trio of 3 MORE AMUSE BOUCHES! One was thinly sliced radish wrapped like a tortilini stuffed with cream and a veggie purée. Another was a thin cracker exterior filled with goats cheese but it looked like a toasted marshmallow. The last was a green tube of magic stuffed with panna cotta. Ok, sucker punches aside, I'm still doing well. I'm still light on my feet. I let my years of food training kick in. Now that the amuse bouches are out of the way, they fucking hit you with a motherfucking FIFTH AMUSE BOUCHE! Who hurt these people? 5 of them? The fifth one was a prepared mussel with a cream and wine sauce. That fifth amuse was like a left jab that caught me funny. I shake it off, get back in there. So, finally, the first course was caviar with teeny tiny blinis. The caviar was on top of this seafood gelée and a cauliflower purée. Never thought of caviar and cauliflower going together, but they do. Now I'm feeling a bit cocky. That dish weren't nuthin! I'm bobbin and weavin. 2nd course: frog legs and onion ravioli. The frog legs are the specialty of this place and I see why. The onion ravioli were a real surprise as I didn't see it in the description. I'm still loose. I'm jabbing and floating. 3rd course: pumpkin tart. Ok, this tart was much bigger than I thought it would be. It was tasty but that pastry was rich enough that this thing was deceptive. Still feeling ok, but realized it's the 5th round and I thought it was the 7th. Just gotta keep going. 4th course: sea bass with black truffle, Jerusalem artichoke and "devil jus". Delicious but very rich. Wasn't expecting a fish course to be heavy. I'm taking a few hits, but it ain't nuthin. Keep my gloves up and I keep going. 5th course: roasted deer tenderloin with a deer & blueberry jus and compressed sweet potato cut into thin slices and layered one after the other to create 2 perfect cubes. Deer was cooked to perfection. The compressed sweet potato was exquisite. Ok, ok. Took some knocks, but I'm in the 9th round and I know I'm gonna be able to go the distance. 6th course: Cheese. They wheel out this cart that has about 20 cheeses in it ranging from kinda stinky to stinky to fully green mold. When they open up the door to this display case you are getting hammmered by the scent of either the finest of French cheeses ever imagined or a terminal case of foot fungus. I make my choices including a classic Camembert and a super French blue cheese. There was one that was close to an aged gouda, one that had a ribbon of ash in the middle and the last was described by the waiter as "very strong". I'm taking some serious body blows. My gloves keep dropping and now I'm taking head shots. I'm dead on my feet. I'm praying for death. This cheese is so fatty and rich. I wasn't ready for this. This cheese was watching my old fights, it knew my weaknesses. Then, a palette cleanser of grapefruit sorbet shows up. It was the whiff of ammonia salt I needed to get my second wind. This meal ain't gonna beat me! 7th course: Diced green apple, poached apple pieces, shiso ice cream, and panna cotta. Truly delicious. Not heavy. Thank buddha. I think I can make it. I can't hear my trainer. There is no sound. I'm functioning on muscle memory. They ask us if we want coffee. I see people at other tables getting espresso shots, but it comes with a plate of candy coated pretzels and what looks like cinnamon sugar coated sheets of ginger bread. We avoid coffee to avoid the extra food. Secret course 8: They bring out a plate of 5 dessert pieces: A candied orange peel, a compressed tangerine gelée piece, a mini pice of layered orange cake (I swear by Christ that a shrink ray was used to make this), a chocolate truffle, and a mini financier cake. Through the drunken haze of a food coma and partially out of sheer terror, I ask for the check. I pay and practically sprint out of the building before they try to cram a dinner mint into my mouth and results in my body exploding. This meal was truly a great experience and highly recommend this place.

We wondered through the Le Petit France, and I was telling my partner about the Le Cord de Lange as a lunch option (the place I discovered when I was in Strasbourg last year), but as we walked closer, I saw the sign I recognized- Michelin star. We saw the menu and decided that that will be the place for us today. After 40 minutes waiting for them to open for lunch, we walked back right at noon, to see few people ahead of us being seated. We were not that hungry, so we agreed to share steak tartare, and each got a main dish, followed by a desert. Steak tartare was the best I ever had in my life! Loved it! My partner had a duck breast, and I had fish. Both were delicate and cooked so well! The fish (cod) with crispy skin, with bok choy and the cream butter sauce, was marvelous. For the dessert, he ordered the strawberry soup with the dragon fruit soufflé and the vanilla ice cream. Amazing! As we left the restaurant, I messaged my friends about Umami and told they have to visit, and learned that apparently, it's not that easy. With only seven tables they get booked fast. So if you are lucky to walk in like us, grab a seat and enjoy your meal

I guess I was hoping for the truffle to have been infused into the ice cream, as I have experienced at Millennium Restaurant in San Francisco. With the truffle and chocolate shaved onto the ice cream, it provided for a more bland experience * Post-dessert tray was all kinds of delicious - madeleines and chocolates! As we entered a young female server was placing small folded sheets of paper with numbers written on them on all the empty tables. Only one table inside was occupied, by a party of two. The server asked us if we had a reservation. We said no. She looked around at the empty tables and said, "Take any table you want." We took a corner table. Two young gentlemen entered the restaurant after us and sat at a table near ours. Ten minutes passed before a male server approached the table with the two gentlemen, handed them menus, chatted with them a minute and then disappeared. More minutes passed. I went back to the kitchen and the male server was deep in conversation with a cook. I asked him if he spoke English. He said yes. I said we had been seated 20 minutes ago and had yet to be offered water, a menu, etc. He apologized profusely, and when I pointed out that he had brought menus to the table near ours, he said he assumed we had already been helped. He said they were having trouble with the female server, and he had only just been called in to help out and would bring us menus right away. As we waited more minutes, a young couple with a dog entered. They stood in the alcove some minutes more, looking around to see if anyone would seat them. Eventually the male waiter reappeared, walked over to them, greeted them jovially, bent down and began hugging and brushing and playing with the dog. We bid them Au Revoir as we exited the restaurant, the waiter protesting that he was just on his way to our table.

What a lovely spot to have lunch or dinner in when visiting Strasbourg. Located in old town, this…read morefamily run business looks like it hasn't changed since it was built oh so many years ago. It's quaint exterior will draw you in and the cozy interior or lovely patio is the perfect place to enjoy a traditional Alsatian meal. We stopped in for lunch and while they had a prix fixe menu with specials of the day- since they have an extensive wine list- we chose to order a variety of starters and entrees to share around the table and pair with some of their excellent wines. Be warned- the portion sizes are huge so if you are not eating with a group- be careful about the amount of food that you order. We started with 6 appetizers- everything from herring with apples, goat cheese with tomatoes and zucchini, fois gras, head cheese, crawfish salad, and a pate. All were excellent and the fois gras was so good we ordered an additional one to enjoy! As for our entrees- good thing we split those as well. There was chicken breast with confit and olives, la choucroute two ways- one with 9 kinds of meat and sausages, and the other with 3 different fish. The sauerkraut on the fish version was so sweet and buttery it was hard to believe it was sauerkraut ( it was tasty, and this from a girl who does not like sauerkraut!) The service is casual and friendly. If you don't speak French- the menu does have English translations on it so you can bridge the communication gap that way. Our lunch per person with all kinds of wine and food only ran about $35 Euro which was really reasonable. And remember if you go for lunch- they had several specials on the day we were there- all reasonably priced. If you are looking for a traditional Alsatian restaurant located in in a great spot right by the "covered bridge" in Strasbourg- check out Restaurant Ami Schutz. Exactly what you think a restaurant in this town should look and taste like! And even better? There were more locals in the place than tourists so you know it is a good choice!
