I might be a bit biased because I love cheese…read more This place is quite spendy, but you will find a vast variety of cheeses from all over. The servers were knowledgeable enough to make recommendations on wines to pair with each cheese, which cheeses to select based on the flavor palate I was looking for. The portions on the cheese plate are TINY, however, so don't go in and be hungry unless you're ready to break the bank. Decor and atmosphere get an A+; I could be on a date, or grabbing lunch with an acquaintance (which I was), or holding a business meeting. It's not a casual bar - slightly more upscale, though I was ok in jeans. My experience with service was that it was slow and inattentive, even by Spanish standards, but that could also be due to the fact that my dinner buddy did not speak a single word of Spanish so he insisted on the English-speaking server. It's worth a trip for the experience, though there are several other restaurants in the area that might be better suited to the casual traveler.

Fantastic place. Very friendly, high-end style service, comfortable setting and seating. Food…read morecentered around cheeses, as you might imagine, and everything was delicious. (Nota bene: assume for all below descriptions that the food also had a very tasty cheese based sauce over, under or beside the dish. Further assume that this cheese was delicious) We had the bacalao (cod), the roasted vegetables, and the macaroni and cheese for the little guy. They also had some very tasty chips/cheese plate and some bread that preceded the food. All very tasty. My wife had a nice house Rosé, and I had what passes for a micro-brew in Spain, a beer from Toledo that was surprisingly flavorful. A must see is the living wall near the back wine bar. The bar itself is very cool and backed by a huge case of cheese, but the fully planted living wall stole the show. Highly recommended.

I used to work at a small gourmet deli in LA where I became cheese obsessed (thank god for those lactaid tablets! that help me digest cow milk) and when we moved back to Madrid and I breezed past the window display on Arenal filled with an interesting large block cheese selection along with charcuterie and other choice Spanish food products, I felt I'd found something familiar, something close to home. And something that would definitely test my willpower. And though it is nothing like home, really, it is large and spectacular nonetheless. There's a wonderful variety of cheese to choose from: cured sheep cheese, feta, swiss, gruyere, mascarpone, comte, ricotta, munster, morbier and much more. The selection of meats and charcuterie is crazy. This is a great place to shop for a party, a special dinner, a gift (basket, maybe?), the holidays and to take back home with you on the plane, that is, if you are lucky enough not to get busted by Customs. Don't sweat the formal and sometimes grumpy service. They are service oriented but they aren't there to make you feel at home. And, it turns out that the deli, though quite traditional, offers coffee made with different types of milk, including a milk that is lactose free!!! This is a huge bonus for me and still unheard of in LA. Score, Spain!
