Pies, smoothies, trifles, ice cream. Yum!! We purchased a bushel of apples on our last visit, which we cored/peeled/sliced using an inexpensive gadget from Target or Ace Hardware(?). Froze on cookie sheets then transferred to gallon bags. We bought some that were a bit soft for pie--maybe because we froze them?--but are great dehydrated (for us & our dogs!) or made into apple butter. (Pies? Ask for the firmest apple.)

Yesterday's visit we were lucky enough to stumble upon her farm on a volunteer day, and we stayed and helped plant tomatoes and were given a delicious dinner and cold beer for our efforts. Gail also gave us 3 dozen of her farm fresh eggs (from exotic breeds of the most beautiful and happy chickens on earth), tomato plants, various pepper plants, and herbs to start our own little garden this summer outside our little apartment in Arlington!! We couldn't be more excited. When we visit Deauville we always leave with more than we hoped for, and at the best price you can imagine. Gail does this to do her part in changing the world, not for a profit. She treat's her land with respect and you can quite literally taste the love in every last bite. We would be there every day if we could. If you are looking for the perfect day to spend outside in the Shenandoah valley picking your own veggies and gathering your own eggs head to Gail's. Also, check out her documentary 'DoeVille' if you have a screening near you - we aren't the only ones who have had our lives changed by this amazing woman.

A FUN stopover from I-81 aka semi-truck race track…read more +. Ambiance is that of a rustic but clean tasting room. Think of an estate vineyard tasting room but for a potato chip maker. +++. They offer fresh made kettle chips here. Their manufacturing is quite automated with few human inspectors that visitors can see through big windows. No photos of their manufacturing rooms / processes are allowed. They offer potato chip tasting for free and you can buy flavors you want in various sizes. Can't get any fresher than this! They use snowden potatoes, sunflower oil and the pink salt from Utah. I've not seen so much of that great salt ever. I liked their mama zuma and salt and vinegar the best and bought enough to share with my family and friends. ++. Price seems reasonable for a small operation... comparable to major brands. +++. Service is friendly and informative. Very patient with many children visitors ( likely to/fro cavern visits ). ++. Parking is free next to the plant / tasting room / gift shop. Not thrilled that they use sunflower oil but happy they use the same salt I use at home. I hadn't seen this brand before but I like them better than Miss Vickie's. Apparently they distribute through specialty stores and deli's.

They do pick your own apples, plus have cider, apples, and a few other things for sale. Cash only. Their apples had some sort of problem this year... I guess a lot came off with the storms and the ones left on the trees were spotted (but still crisp and tasty). Was $15 for a half bushel. I also liked that they had apple picking poles to lend!

Going rate is $15 for a bushel and about 6 for their homemade apple cider. Beautiful weather for a stroll through the orchard with plenty of perfectly ripe and crisp apples to go around!

There was only one food/farm vendor (probably because it's February) but she was very friendly & helpful in explaining the history of the neighborhood and had a diverse selection including leafy greens, root vegetables, baked goods, 100% juices, apples, frozen berries, Alaskan salmon, and eggs for which I learned they reuse the cardboard cartons that otherwise would cost 35 cents each! I bought olive bread, pumpkin bread, eggs and a bottle of 100% blackberry juice. Next time I'm ever in the area again, I will definitely stop by.
