We were going to order more but the waiter kindly recommended we not as it was a lot. Second time we went back, we had the zamburinas as an appetizer and they are excellent too. As a cider house the cider is of course good and it's fun seeing the waiters pour it from on high. The service was surprisingly good. They were super friendly and took care of us. When I arrived, I was given the menu and I chose to get a grilled Merluze (Hake). It came with potatoes. I asked for it with no salt, as Spanish cuisine tends to be too salty for my taste. As I waited for my meal, I was given bread, which I ate...in many parts of Spain, any bread you get is an extra charge. The fish came nicely grilled, tender on the inside and nicely browned on the outside. The flavor was good and the seasoning was low, basically no salt. I asked for pepper and it made my dish perfect for me. Lots of locals were eating here, so i's not a tourist trap. They take credit cards.

The waiter spoke English and helped us with the menu. We started with some wine and a cheese board with bread. Some of the cheese was very mild but others quite strong... As we ate, the place started to fill up with what appeared to be locals. Some were older, some couples and some families. It did not look like tourists. My wife ordered Rape fish also known as monkfish ... It was grilled whole with a lot of garlic sauce and boiled potatoes. She loved it. I had Hale in urcyn sauce over a thin layer of sliced potatoes. Staff were running from one end to the other. Hostess told us to go outside and find a table. All tables (2) were standing in puddled water. We thought about going back in and complaining. Honestly, we didn't want to go through all that hassle again. Horrible Experience!

The Mediterranean nations have the word, but not the place: their socialization centers are tables at cafés and restaurants, where you hang out with people you knew before you arrived. They appear not to appreciate the benefits of a drinking establishment you can patronize specifically to meet strangers. They know that nice hotels are supposed to HAVE bars, though. That's why in the basement of Oviedo's Gran Hotel is a gorgeous, elegant, wood-paneled bar with comfy chairs perfect for lounging in, and hi-top stools perfect for chatting in: they know they're SUPPOSED to have them. Maybe they saw it in a movie, or something. The problem is, nobody here knows how to use it. Or if they do, they choose not to. That's why I'm sitting here alone drinking an Armagnac, admiring the beautiful, empty room, sad that none of the (Oviedons? Oviedites?) the people of Oviedo know what a fabulous watering hole in their midst. This place would be shoulder-to-shoulder in NY, SF, Chicago, Boston, LA, name it. The bartender is excellent; he comes out to check on me every three minutes or so, before disappearing into the back to resume his conversation with his unseen coworker (the chef, perhaps? An unneeded waiter?). But this place is a ghost town. It is a great shame, because a lot of work and money obviously went into making this a first rate bar. So if you're in town, and desire an awesome cocktail lounge, come to the Black Bar (a name, one assumes, taken from its black granite bar top). Bring all your friends - you'll have the place to yourselves.
