We arrived very late (2:30am) and the staff was accommodating our arrival ensuring that our keys and such were available for us. The rooms were great but the grounds, breakfast, staff, and catering to cyclists was the best. As we interacted with the staff we suspected they were family as they all clearly looked like sisters...and we were right. Family owned for quite some time and the care and attention to detail shows. The attitude of friendliness to us at every moment was very nice. The front grounds were amazingly kept and welcoming to just sit and enjoy the sun and conversation. For us it presented a great place for some après refreshments as we eased our sore legs. The hotel is perfectly located for cyclists. While we didn't partake in the promoted Stelvio Experience (we had arranged outer own courses for the 3 days) it did look like quite a good organization if you hadn't arranged a plan in advance. The hotel and Bormio are perfectly located for riding. We didn't use our car at all and were able to ride Stelvio, Gavia, Mortirolo and other areas with ease. The hotel itself caters to cyclists with an amazing secure bike room and all the tools you could need to give your ride a tune each day and wash afterwards. Really fantastic. And the laundry service for your cycling kit also was very welcome. The front desk also carries some gels and electrolytes for purchase if you need some. While we didn't partake in the restaurant for dinner, the breakfast was amazing. An array of very tasty options to please everyone. Coffee, latte, espresso machine accommodates those in your party who drink coffee. And if you don't there are plenty of other fresh fruit juices to enjoy. Fantastic breakfast to start the day. Then, the spa itself is an amazing building built by Peter Zumthor (Google it) entirely out of the local rock. He has created an unforgettable experience. Try swimming out though a quartzite rock doorway into the heated pool at night and sit in the steam looking at the snow and stars. On the other hand, you're in a rather ordinary little Swiss village, so if you want to leave the hotel there's not much to see unless you want to go hiking. Bring books and a swimsuit. You can get there pretty easily by (very efficient) public transport: train from the airport, changing several times, and then a bus taking a spectacular route winding through the valleys.

The room was pristine. The views from our balcony were unreal. The restaurant was great, the breakfast was great. I will absolutely be coming back here when I stay in Varenna someday again. Make sure you listen to their website when it says to pack light, you really do have to climb up a lot of stairs to get to your room that are very narrow and it is pretty much impossible to do if you have a large suitcase.

My guess is that Varenna is a magnet for American destination weddings, which probably explains why parts of these Hotels' reservation books were already full, even when we inquired many months in advance. The Albergo Milano is located right in the old town and up. It looks very romantic and complete with killer views from the balcony.

The spa/bains area is extensive and immaculate. There were 9 rooms and several relaxation areas as well both indoor and outdoor. Gorgeous pool which is also well sized. The breakfast is really well done. All the indulgent options (bread pudding, bacon) and healthy options (fresh juices with ingredients of your choosing, poached eggs). Concierge is very helpful for hikes, tours. The e-bike was so much fun to take around the town and neighboring silvaplana. Only downside was any request sourcing from the front desk seemed to get lost in translation to Housekeeping, not sure why but it happened 3 times. Second, aware it's a mountain town, but it was hot..our room was too stuffy and only way to cool down was to open the windows. However we faced the front so it wasn't feasible due to noise. Lastly, we didn't really conduct our research on location, but note the Kempinski is at the edge of town, so it wasn't as convenient to simply walk everywhere like at the other well known properties. There is a bus stop right in front of the hotel.

Interesting historic hotel, which was kind of a maze inside trying to find our tour groups…read morebreakfast room. We accidentally ate in the wrong room one morning. Bedrooms had been retrofitted, so some of them had little steps into rooms, into the bathroom, etc. The shower floor also had a ledge inside that could easily be tripped/slipped on. Someone in our group said the shower leaked all over the floor. I had a single room, which included a single bed, bathroom, desk, and wardrobe. Bottled waters were complimentary and replenished (sparkling and still). The room had everything I could need, besides a mini fridge, which was disappointing. The doors were made of heavy wood with very large heavy keys. If you don't want to carry them around, they will hold at the front desk until you get back. There is a small elevator if you don't want to take the stairs. The breakfasts were very elegant - smoked salmon, meats, bread, juice, coffee, hot chocolate, tea, yogurt, muesli, fruit, veggies, soft boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, cheese, etc. The group dinners were less exciting. As a part of our group tour through Vacations By Rail, we had a couple of 3 course meals included. There were only a couple of choices for main and starter that we selected the night before. The mains especially did not wow me. One of the desserts was completely frozen, but I am not sure if it was meant to be as it was hard to eat. I would have preferred to dine outside of the hotel or had more choices with our tour group in the actual restaurant. One dinner was served in the hotel breakfast room, while the other night was in the restaurant. Maybe the restaurant meals would be better a la carte rather than made for a group. The staff tried to scare people to make reservations in the hotel restaurant on our free night, saying nothing good would be open on a Monday, but they were incorrect. We found several options with Swiss specialties that were open. The location is perfect for exploring Old Town while remaining quiet. Walking distance to the train isn't too bad and it's all flat.

The room is beyond small (we were in Switzerland for 17 days, so stayed in 6 other locations, none were this bad!) Although the staff could not have been nicer, everything else was less than acceptable. Can not recommend this hotel.
