Restaurant Magma attracts the young and hip from its Oberkampf neighborhood, and everyone knows everyone else. Clientele meet up with the servers and kitchen staff, hugging, kissing, and clicking glasses. Often, the task at hand is overlooked. The pacing for our meal was ridiculous, and our dinner lasted over four hours. Our first three dishes on the set menu came quickly, but then we waited, and waited, and waited. The servers would disappear out the front door for periods of time, and our needs were forgotten. Wine orders went array, and the server would come back 30 minutes later and apologize. While the wait staff were perfectly lovely, the lack of professionalism was mind blowing as the kitchen was turning out Michelin quality food. Because we were older, we were sat next to the only other older diners, and when those two tops left the restaurant, we sat alone with the Berlin Wall separating us from the young and cool patrons. It was apartheid dining. I felt very self conscious. My partner/spouse was disgusted, but I found humor watching the kitchen staff drinking beer while at the stoves. I never saw anything like it at a renown restaurant in Paris. It was a brave new world. After 12:30 AM, we staggered out of Magma. Our hunger had dissipated at 22:00 after sitting down at 20:30. I feel bad for Magma, and the food was good enough for a return visit. However, I'll be alone, because my partner has no further patience for Magma.

Tamada: A Georgian Home Away from Home…read more Tamada is a little Georgian gem in Paris, just steps from Luxembourg Gardens--and absolutely worth a visit. I grew up in Georgia, a Megrelian from Imereti on the Rioni River. We Megrelians are the "Michelin" of Georgian food, so I don't take Georgian restaurants lightly. I left home decades ago and travel constantly for work, so I'm always hunting for the real thing. I've eaten at Georgian restaurants all over the world, but Tamada really got to me. The moment I walked in, I felt the warmth, the colors, and the genuine hospitality. It felt like home. The food is freshly made, authentic, and packed with flavor. The khachapuri, khinkali, and lobio served in a traditional clay pot are all spot-on. Their eggplant with walnuts is wonderful, and I loved that they bring Georgian spices on the side so you can adjust everything to your taste. The space is small, cozy, and spotlessly clean, clearly designed with care. What sealed it for me was that the staff are Georgian, the chef is Georgian, and the Georgian owner is genuinely present, checking in, making sure people are happy. When you walk in, you feel it instantly: you are welcome home in Georgia. Paris has plenty of beautiful restaurants, but if you want real Georgian food and real Georgian hospitality, go here. The prices are reasonable too. I left with a full heart and a smile, and I can't wait to go back.

The food was delicious and prepared exactly according to traditional standards as it is a family business that provides very close oversight. I found this place to be perfectly suited for small casual lunches and diners or as a great get-together place for family and friends alike. The tables and entire restaurant were super clean and service was very quick and personal. With the quiet Georgian music on the background and delicious food on the table, I felt completely immersed in a genuine Georgian way to enjoy and celebrate life. I loved this place and will definitely be back at my next occasion in Paris.
